Giving Pets Emergency First Aid Care

Browse News

DENVER, Colo. -- In case your pet is suddenly injured or needs emergency medical care for any reason, the American Red Cross is giving first aid classes to treat pets.

Kristine Hughes has been a CPR instructor for about a decade. She began teaching the pet program a few years back, and says it’s proven quite popular.

“As our pets become more important to us they replace children in a lot of people’s lives,” Hughes said. “People want to know how to take care of them and to do the things they can.”

“And people are in it for all different reasons,” said Hughes, whose pet first aid courses usually include between five and 12 students.

Jody Dimas of Denver is among those taking advantage of the classes. She recently retired after 32 years in hotel management, and plans to use the pet first aid skills in her new career.

“I just started my own business in pet sitting and walking, and I am in a dog grooming class to ultimately become a dog groomer,” Dimas said. “I know how I would want someone to take care of my animals and what they mean to me, so I want to be able to be prepared to do that for other people.”

Sheena Abeyta has a Border Collie-Lab mix and plans to add a new Sheep Dog puppy to her life, a dog waiting for her three states away.

“I’m actually going to pack a first aid kit and it will be nice on our way home that if he chokes on anything, I’ll be ready for it and have some emergency numbers,” Abeyta said. “That way he’s all set and ready to go.”

From basic first aid to rescue breathing, and even muzzling a dog, this class prepares its students for most anything.

“One dog I had, she cut herself on the siding in the back yard,” said student Marissa Darnell of Lakewood. “I did what I could to wrap her up and took her to the vet so it’s good to know for those kinds of things.

It would be nice to have somebody certified and offer this class to new adopters. Might be checking into this more.

I know adult and pediatric CPR. I'm assuming that its the same sort of thing. Getting a good seal around the mouth might prove a challenge since dogs mouths are different. I think its a great thing to offer though.

Very helpful, and appreciated. It's always good to be prepared for anything, especially the worse case scenarios.

I can give my dogs their shots but as for CPR, I am lost! I would take classes if they were at a convient time and place, I always wanted to be a vet but I had children to raise and I got sidetracked, now I am too old but if I could have some knowledge on how to save a pets life, it my come in handy some day!

Great idea! I hope all the groomers out there and walkers look into this as well as the owners themselves.

I think this is a wonderful idea. Some people have no idea how to take even basic care of their animals not to mention first aid.

GREAT idea! I live in Denver, and will definitely look into this. I would hate to stand by uselessly while one of my pets was having an emergency. This will give me some basic tools to help.

I think many Red Cross offices offer this class and it would be a good idea for pet owners to take it.

This is a great service the Denver Red Cross is offering. I will see if the Red Cross in my area is offering a similar class. I would definitely appreciate having that training.

This is so great, we learn this for our children why not out pets?

In rescue we have a pup chock on a piece of food,a nd it was so scarey! Driving and breathing in to a 6 week old rat terrier puppys nose was not easy! I wish I had known the right thing to do, it might have helped ease the discomfort. The pup lived, but it was so scarey!
