Giving Pets Emergency First Aid Care

Browse News

DENVER, Colo. -- In case your pet is suddenly injured or needs emergency medical care for any reason, the American Red Cross is giving first aid classes to treat pets.

Kristine Hughes has been a CPR instructor for about a decade. She began teaching the pet program a few years back, and says it’s proven quite popular.

“As our pets become more important to us they replace children in a lot of people’s lives,” Hughes said. “People want to know how to take care of them and to do the things they can.”

“And people are in it for all different reasons,” said Hughes, whose pet first aid courses usually include between five and 12 students.

Jody Dimas of Denver is among those taking advantage of the classes. She recently retired after 32 years in hotel management, and plans to use the pet first aid skills in her new career.

“I just started my own business in pet sitting and walking, and I am in a dog grooming class to ultimately become a dog groomer,” Dimas said. “I know how I would want someone to take care of my animals and what they mean to me, so I want to be able to be prepared to do that for other people.”

Sheena Abeyta has a Border Collie-Lab mix and plans to add a new Sheep Dog puppy to her life, a dog waiting for her three states away.

“I’m actually going to pack a first aid kit and it will be nice on our way home that if he chokes on anything, I’ll be ready for it and have some emergency numbers,” Abeyta said. “That way he’s all set and ready to go.”

From basic first aid to rescue breathing, and even muzzling a dog, this class prepares its students for most anything.

“One dog I had, she cut herself on the siding in the back yard,” said student Marissa Darnell of Lakewood. “I did what I could to wrap her up and took her to the vet so it’s good to know for those kinds of things.

Thats really great that the Red Cross is doing that. Most people don't know what to do if an animal gets hurt.

This is a really good idea. hopefully it gains momenyum and support all across the country. It would probably be a good idea to train all the animal control officers in the police depts across the country. That would make a great start and most people would call 911 first.

What a great idea! I have to give my cat pills on a daily basis and one of the pills used to get stuck in his throat. Now I dip the pills in flaxseed oil to help them go down, but I'm still always concerned about choking. Training on this and other first aid concerns would certainly make me feel much better.

I think this is a great idea. It is a wonder that someone hasn't thought of this sooner. It would be nice to know how to help your pet in an emergency.

This is great. Anything we could do in an emergency is always helpful. For people when you call 911 they can talk you thru some things. We should have a 911 for pets also.

Great idea. I plan on taking this course when it is offered in my city. I just completed the initial DART training, so this course will be a good addition to my animal saving skills.

Excellent program! I didn't know that the Red Cross offered this, and while I've been certified in first aid/cpr for humans, this would be an exceptional course to take. Hopefully it is offered at least once a year at every Red Cross facility in the nation.

That sounds like a great program! It really is important to know some basic first aid when it comes to the animals in our lives. Everyone should have a pet friendly first aid kit on hand, and some knowledge on what to do should an injury occur.

That is a great idea - I've got a few things stowed for typical horse treatment of certain minor things, but to have a full kit for my dog and cats and for more in depth issues would be a smart move.

Are prepared kits available at a reasonable price?

I havn't seen a prepared kit, but there was a list of stuff in an issue of Cat Fancy that I used to get inspiration for my kit, and I used some other sources to see what would be most needed. At www.redcrossstore.org, which was what this article was about, they have the first aid book for dogs and one for cats and the books include info for creating a first aid kit for your pet. Your vet is also a great source of information.

When King died in March our neighbor that happen to be at our house did CPR on the dog but I often wondered if he was doing it properly. I wish to take this course since I have 4 other dogs and need to know how to handle pet emergencies. Perhaps if we knew how to do proper CPR on King he might be here today. I called the cops and told them if they saw a green ford explorer racing through town I won't stop. We feel we failed King not knowing. This hurts me more than anything.

This would be good for not just first time adopters, but everyone! I would love to know how to do doggie first aid, and I have been a pet owner for years and have worked at a vet clinic and have never been trained animal cpr.
