Giving Pets Emergency First Aid Care

Browse News

DENVER, Colo. -- In case your pet is suddenly injured or needs emergency medical care for any reason, the American Red Cross is giving first aid classes to treat pets.

Kristine Hughes has been a CPR instructor for about a decade. She began teaching the pet program a few years back, and says it’s proven quite popular.

“As our pets become more important to us they replace children in a lot of people’s lives,” Hughes said. “People want to know how to take care of them and to do the things they can.”

“And people are in it for all different reasons,” said Hughes, whose pet first aid courses usually include between five and 12 students.

Jody Dimas of Denver is among those taking advantage of the classes. She recently retired after 32 years in hotel management, and plans to use the pet first aid skills in her new career.

“I just started my own business in pet sitting and walking, and I am in a dog grooming class to ultimately become a dog groomer,” Dimas said. “I know how I would want someone to take care of my animals and what they mean to me, so I want to be able to be prepared to do that for other people.”

Sheena Abeyta has a Border Collie-Lab mix and plans to add a new Sheep Dog puppy to her life, a dog waiting for her three states away.

“I’m actually going to pack a first aid kit and it will be nice on our way home that if he chokes on anything, I’ll be ready for it and have some emergency numbers,” Abeyta said. “That way he’s all set and ready to go.”

From basic first aid to rescue breathing, and even muzzling a dog, this class prepares its students for most anything.

“One dog I had, she cut herself on the siding in the back yard,” said student Marissa Darnell of Lakewood. “I did what I could to wrap her up and took her to the vet so it’s good to know for those kinds of things.

These are great classes for shelter workers and pet owners--we've offered them in our area and they are always well attended. It's great to know what you can do to help your pet until you can reach the vet.

This sounds like a good idea, altho I would think that the first aid methods, such as cpr, would be different for small dogs or cats rather than for large dogs.

Always a good thing for shelter staff and pet sitters to be well versed in. In a true emergency, you will buy the pet time so it can be taken to a vet.

if i hired a pet sitter i'd make sure they knew how to do CPR and first aid on my cats. i wouldn't board my cats so if something happened the sitter may not be around but he/she could be and in that case i'd want them to be certified. i myself need to find a class near here and become ceritified, especially being a volunteer at a cat shelter.

These types of courses should be offered hand in hand with the people CPR and emergency ones - everywhere. It is always good to know what to do - and what not to do.

We had that class in our area. Perhaps because I am a retired nurse, I did not feel I learned much from it. I also think the Red Cross classes are too tied to the book, basically the instructor reads the book to you. This was always my issue with the CPR renewal class in the hospital - just go over the new stuff and let us demonstrate the CPR. After 13 years in the field, I dreaded that class because it was so repetitive and boring.

This is such a great idea. There have been times when I did not know what to do, and the vets were closed. I know I love my pets dearly. I need to learn more about emergency care. If for no other reason, to get them out of pain as quickly as possible. I hope every area gets this going.

This is a very good idea, a lot of people don't know what to when their animal gets injured. A lot of animals that are hit by cars are in shock and if given the proper care will revive. I have come upon dogs that were hit and no one stopped, once the people that hit a dog told me the dog was dead and I just covered it up and kept it warm and it was fine. People need to know first aid for animals.

Great idea. I wish it had came out years ago when my 2 year brother drowned a puppy not knowing any better. We gave the puppy CPR and it lived for 4 more hours but eventually died. I think everyone should be trained in Pet Emergency First Aid Care.
