German Polar Bear Cub Named

Browse News

NUREMBERG, Germany – The polar bear cub that was rescued by Nuremberg Zoo officials has been given a name.

The tiny female cub has been named Flocke and is said to be doing well. She weighs about seven pounds, and zoo veterinarians say she has no foreseeable health issues.

Nuremberg Zoo officials decided to save Flocke after her siblings were eaten by their mother. The bear could be seen in its enclosure picking up her cub and dropping it – indicating the animal was distressed.

Following her rescue, officials asked the world community to submit name ideas. In all, more than 25,000 names were suggested. In German, Flocke means “flake” as in snowflake.

The young bear has an international following similar to that of Knut. Knut is another polar bear who was saved from his mother about a year ago.

Zoo officials say they hope Flocke's celebrity status will help promote awareness about how global climate change is effecting natural polar bear habitats.

Is it common for polar bear mothers to eat her babies? This little cub is absolutely adorable.

How cute. Why did the mother eat the siblings? Is it to get rid of ill animals? Could nature be taking it's course?

My guess would be that the mother polar bear was under stress. I wonder how many cubs she had? I've only seen pictures of polar bears with single or twin cubs.

it seems odd that the mother would do this, but i also find it odd that they named the bear flake, like a person can be a flake, but that is what comes to mind to me. that's probably just the americanization of the word though.

"so it said global climate change makes the mom not want it anymore.....?"

^^Well you know, animals have more heightened senses than humans so maybe they also sense things are changing, like the climate thing. That distresses them and makes them do such things as this.

The little bear looks so adorable <3

We need more "flockes," both from the sky and as "celebrities" to battle global warming.

I just recently saw an update on Flocke. She looked into a mirror and seemed totally fascinated with her image. She smelled the image then kind of just fell back into a resting position. It's good to see her doing well.

I am really glad that he was able to be saved. I also think it is great that he will promote climate change awareness. Maybe a cute polar bear cub will get people to realize that we need to help the environment.

I think the real story in this isn't just that it was named, but rather that it was saved.
