German Polar Bear Cub Named

Browse News

NUREMBERG, Germany – The polar bear cub that was rescued by Nuremberg Zoo officials has been given a name.

The tiny female cub has been named Flocke and is said to be doing well. She weighs about seven pounds, and zoo veterinarians say she has no foreseeable health issues.

Nuremberg Zoo officials decided to save Flocke after her siblings were eaten by their mother. The bear could be seen in its enclosure picking up her cub and dropping it – indicating the animal was distressed.

Following her rescue, officials asked the world community to submit name ideas. In all, more than 25,000 names were suggested. In German, Flocke means “flake” as in snowflake.

The young bear has an international following similar to that of Knut. Knut is another polar bear who was saved from his mother about a year ago.

Zoo officials say they hope Flocke's celebrity status will help promote awareness about how global climate change is effecting natural polar bear habitats.

Poor thing, I hope there are some serious studies about the cause of mother polar bears behaving this way

What a cute little face! I'm glad there isn't anything in this article about it being wrong to save her....like there was with Knut (not here, but in the media in general).

In german it is probably cute but I kind of like just "snowflake". I doubt Flake cares.

I hope people realize about this Global Warming. I love her name, but I think they should've named her Snowflake not Flake.

I wish Flocke all the best. Too bad the siblings were eaten by the mother. You would have thought that the zoo officials would have stepped in after the first one and not waited until the last on.

I really can't believe it took a public outcry for the officials to save the baby...they want nature to go on as in nature but the bears are in captivity! If you were made to roam the millions of acres of icy slopes and you were couped up in a zoo, I can't think of one of us who wouldn't go crazy!

I'm not crazy about the name, but I suppose it doesn't really matter. What is more important is that she is healthy and will survive. I think I would have preferred "Fluke" over "Flocke" or "Flake"!

We have been following this story online at CNN and USNews since she was first removed from her Mum - here is a link if anyone is interested that shows her crawling and being fed - Flocke is a marvel to behold and I am so pleased that the zoo officials did step in to save her. Her place in history is assured and will hopefully lead to more education and awareness of her species plight

I wish it didn't take public outcry to get them to save this cub and I wished they could have saved the others. What is the point of letting mom kill them?

She's beautiful and I hope she continues to grow and be well. I also hope that they are trying to find the cause of her mothers distress. I believe they said that another mother bear in the same zoo also ate her children. Obviously there is something wrong.

More awareness needs to be out there about the polar bears. Their habitat is in trouble, as is their existence. This affects all of us.

Why hasn't the polar bear been listed as a threatened species, much less an endangered one, under the Endangered Species Act? "At the same time the administration is illegally delaying a decision on the polar bear listing, it is also racing to sell some of the polar bear's most important habitat in the Chukchi Sea for oil and gas development," said Andrew Wetzler, director of the Endangered Species Project at the Natural Resources Defense Council.
