German Polar Bear Cub Named

Browse News

NUREMBERG, Germany – The polar bear cub that was rescued by Nuremberg Zoo officials has been given a name.

The tiny female cub has been named Flocke and is said to be doing well. She weighs about seven pounds, and zoo veterinarians say she has no foreseeable health issues.

Nuremberg Zoo officials decided to save Flocke after her siblings were eaten by their mother. The bear could be seen in its enclosure picking up her cub and dropping it – indicating the animal was distressed.

Following her rescue, officials asked the world community to submit name ideas. In all, more than 25,000 names were suggested. In German, Flocke means “flake” as in snowflake.

The young bear has an international following similar to that of Knut. Knut is another polar bear who was saved from his mother about a year ago.

Zoo officials say they hope Flocke's celebrity status will help promote awareness about how global climate change is effecting natural polar bear habitats.

I am so glad they were able to save her. I just hope she doesn't have any future problems. There may be a time before long when the only Polar Bears we have are those that are living in the zoos. I just watched a documentary about global warming and if things don't change, the polar bear is in real trouble! Live GREEN and save our planet and these wonderful creatures!

I'm glad they decided to save it. I know at one point there was a zoo that wasn't going to save a polar bear because it would then not be raised naturally, but if the mother is distressed like Flocke's was, it is due to the living in man-made conditions, and the babies should be given a chance at survival

They chose a suitable Polar bear name.

"Zoo officials say they hope Flocke's celebrity status will help promote awareness about how global climate change is effecting natural polar bear habitats."

Promoting this awareness is a plus in this story.

I agree. Anything to get the word out about what man has done to nature. Awareness is the key to stopping and repairing what we have done. Hopefully it helps.

Just have to say that cub is adorable! But what does a polar bear in captivity eating her cubs have to do with global warming affecting their habitat? She wasn't in her natural habitat. They're unrelated subjects! Odd.

I am glad that this little girl was given a chance of survival. Lets hope that the zoo keepers can discover the stressor to the mother and correct it so that other litters will have a chance to thrive.

It's so unfortunate the polar bears are losing alot of their habitat...hopefully this little one will be able to grow up in a zoo with surroundings similar to what he would have had in the wild. The zoo did the right thing taking it from it's mother.

I'm glad this little cub has been given a chance at life. We have to remember these are wild animals and not used to being in captivity. I hope they can help the mother, it's just to bad they didn't discover what was going on sooner. I hope the zoo keeps a better watch on it's mother animals!

This is such a great story - let's hope the cub continues to do well and can eventually be reintroduced to the other polar bears. Or, even better, rehabilitated and returned to the wild.

Glad to hear Flocke is doing well. I think this zoo needs to take a look at their proceedures and how they conduct their breeding program since they have had two mothers try to kill thier offspring. Seems like they need to do something to reduce the stress in their breeding population.

"Zoo officials say they hope Flocke's celebrity status will help promote awareness about how global climate change is effecting natural polar bear habitats.".....
Does anyone else remember reading the initial story a while back...if this zoo was so concerned about the polar bears population why didn't they save the siblings and the first set of cubs this mother ate....this wasn't her first time eating cubs...I think because it drew national attention now they felt obligated to do something and then tell the people what they want to hear...but that is just my opinion.
