German Polar Bear Cub Named

Browse News

NUREMBERG, Germany – The polar bear cub that was rescued by Nuremberg Zoo officials has been given a name.

The tiny female cub has been named Flocke and is said to be doing well. She weighs about seven pounds, and zoo veterinarians say she has no foreseeable health issues.

Nuremberg Zoo officials decided to save Flocke after her siblings were eaten by their mother. The bear could be seen in its enclosure picking up her cub and dropping it – indicating the animal was distressed.

Following her rescue, officials asked the world community to submit name ideas. In all, more than 25,000 names were suggested. In German, Flocke means “flake” as in snowflake.

The young bear has an international following similar to that of Knut. Knut is another polar bear who was saved from his mother about a year ago.

Zoo officials say they hope Flocke's celebrity status will help promote awareness about how global climate change is effecting natural polar bear habitats.

I'm glad they were able to rescue this baby. I like his name, too. It could be that someday Polar Bears will only be in the zoo.

I saw her picture last week and read about her rescue. It's ashamed her siblings had to die that way. They are so tiny. What a gorgeous little bear. I hope she has a chance to grow up and confront her mother!!!

This is why animals shouldn't be in captivity, it causes them to do unnatural things that they wouldn't do in regular circumstances.

Why keep breeding this female if she obviously can't raise her cubs. Very questionable practice.

A cute and fitting name. I hope she survives. It does not seem like polar bear cubs do too well with their captive mothers. I wish they had intervened sooner, and saved all the cubs, since they are threatened.

Could it be the mother is distressed because she is giving birth in a zoo rather than in the wild where she belongs?
