German Polar Bear Cub Named

Browse News

NUREMBERG, Germany – The polar bear cub that was rescued by Nuremberg Zoo officials has been given a name.

The tiny female cub has been named Flocke and is said to be doing well. She weighs about seven pounds, and zoo veterinarians say she has no foreseeable health issues.

Nuremberg Zoo officials decided to save Flocke after her siblings were eaten by their mother. The bear could be seen in its enclosure picking up her cub and dropping it – indicating the animal was distressed.

Following her rescue, officials asked the world community to submit name ideas. In all, more than 25,000 names were suggested. In German, Flocke means “flake” as in snowflake.

The young bear has an international following similar to that of Knut. Knut is another polar bear who was saved from his mother about a year ago.

Zoo officials say they hope Flocke's celebrity status will help promote awareness about how global climate change is effecting natural polar bear habitats.

One has to wonder if the stress of breeding in captivity may have played some role in the actions of the "mother" polar bear.

Good thing someone was watching that poor mom and her baby. Who can say why she was tossing her baby but I am sure she was stressed and she had what she thought was a logical reason to do it. Thank goodness for zoo caretakers and the care they put into the animals!

That is ridiculous to "hate" the mother! She was just doing what instinct told her to! It's not her fault, animals do that all the time.

Such a cute little one. I hope she becomes a spokes animal for other polar bears who are dying due to global warming. Happiness and health to you, little one.

While I am not a huge fan of zoos, simply because they keep wild animals in captivity in sometimes subpar conditions, it is wonderful that Nuremberg Zoo officials were able to step in and save this little cub. Polar bears truly are a magnificent creature, and anything that can be done to protect their survival is very important.
