German Polar Bear Cub Named

Browse News

NUREMBERG, Germany – The polar bear cub that was rescued by Nuremberg Zoo officials has been given a name.

The tiny female cub has been named Flocke and is said to be doing well. She weighs about seven pounds, and zoo veterinarians say she has no foreseeable health issues.

Nuremberg Zoo officials decided to save Flocke after her siblings were eaten by their mother. The bear could be seen in its enclosure picking up her cub and dropping it – indicating the animal was distressed.

Following her rescue, officials asked the world community to submit name ideas. In all, more than 25,000 names were suggested. In German, Flocke means “flake” as in snowflake.

The young bear has an international following similar to that of Knut. Knut is another polar bear who was saved from his mother about a year ago.

Zoo officials say they hope Flocke's celebrity status will help promote awareness about how global climate change is effecting natural polar bear habitats.

I wonder if the stress of zoo captivity is what caused the mother to eat her young? I am glad the little one was saved, but I worry for his future. Look what happened to poor Knut. He grew up, was not cute and cuddly any more and the zoo wanted to get rid of him.

Of course the mama polar bear was distressed - she is in a cage far away from her natural habitat. It's nice the zoo keepers saved Flocke but I just wish they wouldn't have her kind behind bars.

Maybe the zoos need to put Flocke and Knut together in a World Class Zoo someplace to care for them. And if they are allowed to breed, step in before cannibalism becomes a problem again. With only 25000 polar bears in the world, each one is important to the species survival..

Make sure they have a plan about her future, and keep her in contact with other polar bears. We wouldn't want another Knut problem.
