German Polar Bear Cub Named

Browse News

NUREMBERG, Germany – The polar bear cub that was rescued by Nuremberg Zoo officials has been given a name.

The tiny female cub has been named Flocke and is said to be doing well. She weighs about seven pounds, and zoo veterinarians say she has no foreseeable health issues.

Nuremberg Zoo officials decided to save Flocke after her siblings were eaten by their mother. The bear could be seen in its enclosure picking up her cub and dropping it – indicating the animal was distressed.

Following her rescue, officials asked the world community to submit name ideas. In all, more than 25,000 names were suggested. In German, Flocke means “flake” as in snowflake.

The young bear has an international following similar to that of Knut. Knut is another polar bear who was saved from his mother about a year ago.

Zoo officials say they hope Flocke's celebrity status will help promote awareness about how global climate change is effecting natural polar bear habitats.

Just a shot in the dark, but I wonder if those two mother polar bears'behavior toward their cubs was at all related to their being in captivity.

I wonder if it's common/normal for mother polar bears to kill their cubs.
Who would've thought a polar bear could be sooo adorable!

I don't know that it's common for them to kill their cubs, but the other polar bear they were talking about in this video had been rejected by its mother as well...makes you wonder.

Actually, a lot of baby animals get killed by their mothers. Most of the time it is an acident, but other times, like this, the mother is in distress. She likely did not understand what she was doing, and probably didn't want to hurt her young.

Poor momma bear was so stressed she killed her cubs. A good reason not to have these animals in zoos.

It's so cute. Think how how big it will be when it grows up! I love the name and I'm glad they took this little cub away from her angry Mother before she was killed or injured severely.

I'm so glad they did rescue her. How precious is she!?! The name is really cute, too! I wonder if the German zookeepers are pondering "fixing" the mother polar bear, due the issues she's had with her cubs. I think if I was a zookeeper, I would definitely be looking into that option since she's been more of danger to her cubs rather than a protector, unless it was super risky for the mother's health of course.

I'm not a fan of most zoos though... I understand having sancuaries for injured/rescued animals, but there's a lot of crappy zoos out there.

Very touching story. Comes at a time when the people of this world need remimding about polar bears since their numbers are rapidly declining.

This cub is so cute. I wish I could hold her while she is still small and not able to eat me. I have always loved polar bears and I am saddened by the fact that they may be extinct in their natural habitat someday.

She is so cute! I hope she grows up to be a healthy adult! I get allowing nature to take it's course, and understand the idea of letting the mother do what she was going to do, but a polar bear in a zoo is not in it's natural environment. I'm glad they saved her.
