Genetics Make Cat a Rarity

Browse News

RHODE ISLAND – A rare calico cat in Middletown, R.I. is catching the attention of vets and shelters across the nation because of its gender.

Max and his mother were brought to the Potter League for Animals in June. When employees discovered that Max was a male, they phoned local vets. As it turns out, a male calico is rare – only one is born in every 100,000.

A number of vets examined Max and they all had the same response – no one could recall ever seeing a male calico.

Calico is not a breed but rather a sex-linked color pattern. The tri-colored cats are orange, black and white. Variations can exist, which is why some calicos appear to have spots of grey or brown.

Typically, cats are born with two chromosomes. Max has the two that make him male but he also has an extra chromosome that gives him female characteristics.

Because of their unusual chromosome pair, most male calicos are sterile. In fact, only one in 12,000 male calicos can reproduce. Most do not survive more than a few months, due to genetic deficiencies.

Blood samples have been taken and will be used for genetic testing to see if Max has any health issues including whether or not he’s sterile.

Luckily for nine-year-old Max, he is happy and playful and shows no sign of illness.

As it turns out, there’s a human condition that’s very similar – Klinefelter syndrome. Males with Klinefelter syndrome are also born with an extra chromosome in each cell, also giving them female characteristics.

Male calico cats are more of a rarity than those with Klinefelter, which affects one in 500 to 1,000 human males.

I've heard that male calico cats are rare but I've never actually heard about anyone every having one. My friend has a beautiful female calico with 6 toes on each paw but her calico is sterile too.

I learned how only females were supposed to be born as calicos in my Animal science 207 class.

Max looks like my Cosmo, a girl though. I'm glad Max is oK. I didn't know if there were ever any male calicos.

Wow! I didn't know that they were rare like that! Amazing!

I heard that female Ginger cats are rare, is that true?
I say this because my mother used to have one and her vet said it was rare.

I had never heard of a male calico before. Interesting.

Neat story! Since Max is so old for a male calico, I wonder if he is steril?

Seems to me that Max has broken all the odds. He is a male, and if he is nine years old and healthy he is probably not susceptible to the genetic deficiencies that generally take a surviving male calico very early in life. Very interesting article. I think calicos are among the most beautiful of cats, but did not know that the male of the species is very rare indeed.

I have worked in a cat shelter for 7 years and have never seen a male calico or tortie. I have been told a male tortie came in many many years ago.... It's pretty cool to see a male calico=---but odd too, because you always just assume--a pretty calico like that is a female. Strange. Hopefully the cats tests come back alright and he has a healthy life.

I worked at a shelter in the cat dept, and I always said that if I found a male calico he was going home with me. I guessing he never tried to get him fixed or they would have know long before this.

I had no idea calico was a sex specific gene (meaning I guess it must be on the tail of the second x). I hope it does not have health issues and does not have other female traits which would mean breeding it with a female calico would produce other calico males without health problems etc.

But I suspect unlikely...I wish the best for this cat.

I knew male calico cats were very rare but I did not know they usually didn't live long. Max is a lucky cat if he is already 9. I guess the genetic deficiencies did not affect him.
I wonder if the person who turned him in realized what they had.
