From Food to Friend: Pet Trend Grows in China

GUANGZHOU, China –- Some cultures have traditionally placed canines in the food pyramid rather than on the family tree. But in China, which is known for just that, dogs beginning to fare better these days.

That’s thanks to fashion, the Olympics, a desire for companionship and the ever-growing pet industry.

At one point in Chinese history, lap dogs were considered a fashion accessory for nobles. The trend faded like a pair of acid washed jeans, but has reemerged in the past few years -- marking a cultural change for the traditionally pro-pet eating Asian society.

Reuters reports that an increasing number of toy breeds are popping up on the laps of semi-affluent residents in the country’s larger cities. And to keep the tiny dogs in style, faux Louie Vitton, Prada and other designer doggie-wear can be spotted on most street corners.

“We still eat dog, but not this kind of dog,” said Liu Ming, a salesman in a Guangzhou pet shop, referring to small breeds. “We eat much bigger dogs.”

In fact, Beijing offers dog meat in more than 120 restaurants. But reports indicate they’re closing little-by-little as the Olympics near. Practically speaking, there’s much more to gain financially from a dog that’s someone’s companion compared to one that’s someone’s dinner.

Euromonitor International, which offers “international market intelligence on industries, countries and consumers” estimates that pet food and care spending will eclipse $870 million this year -– marking a 15 percent increase from 2007.

It appears that pets are no longer just for the ϋber-rich. Dogs are touted as friends -– even substitutes for children, much like in the U.S.

And it’s not just a desire for companionship that’s helping canines (Eds. note: and cats, but on a diminished scale).

China has a proverbial gun to its head from animal rights groups to bring animal treatment policies into the 21st century, following the slaughter of thousands of stray cats in an attempt to clean up the streets prior to the Olympic games. (See “China Kills Thousands of Cats as Olympics Approach” in recent Pet Pulse news).

Still, culture doesn’t change overnight.

“In Beijing, there’s a huge market with pitiful dogs waiting in cages to be sold as meat, and literally a few yards away standard poodles dyed in all colors of the rainbow,” said Jill Robinson, CEO of Hong Kong based animal welfare group Animals Asia Foundation.

But with the pet culture picking up momentum and the government taking a lashing from the international community on humane animal treatment, things only look to continue to improve for domesticated animals. The government estimates 150 million dogs are kept as animal companions, accounting for part of the estimated 11 billion other pets there -- mostly birds, reptiles and fish.

An indication that the humane animal treatment trend is really taking root can be seen in Taiwan, where legislators recently passed a law that places an $8,000 fine on anyone that sells dog meat –- which is considered an important winter staple.

“The animal markets keep getting smaller and smaller,” said Marek Michalski, who trades goods in Guangzhou. “Many Chinese I know say if they buy a cat (that’s sold for food) at the market, they’ll set it free.”

Not necessarily the best thing for the felines, but an indication that the idea of eating cats and dogs is becoming taboo in the minds of the Chinese.

At least they are starting to change. Even though they are being forced into it, it's still good.

I am glad they are starting to end this. This is cruel. I hope they extend this to large dogs and cats.

In some cultures, eating dog and cat meat is considered a delicacy. Others hold cows as sacred. I am glad to see the change in dietary habits in china. The changes will take time to become the 'norm' but now that it is becoming a status symbol to tote small dogs, hopefully the trend will carry over to the larger breeds also. As to the horrible conditions the dogs kept for meat - have you even looked at the treatment of cows while being held for slaughter? It's better than it was - but is still pretty gruesome.

I am glad to hear any good news about the treatment of animals in China. A report shown on Tv about Chinas fur market made me seek to my stomach. Dogs and cats are being skinned alive we just have to use it.I will never forget the eyes of the dog chained in a dark basement waiting for a horrific way to die, since I saw that I have not bought anything made in China, because the only way to change things is by the power of the mighty dollar and we the people have this power

I tend to agree with everyone who's said that it's not the kind of animal eaten that's important but the conditions it lives in and the manner of its death. I mean, pigs are supposedly smarter than dogs, so it's not like we adhere to any kind of consistent rules about what animals we do and don't eat. Not that I would want to eat dog or cat myself, but it's unfair to judge cultures based only on the species they're willing to consume.

I'm in agreement with you regarding the different cultural norms for food. Up until a decade ago - the treatment here in the US toward cows that were bred for food was horrible. While it is still not the best of living conditions - it is getting better.

There are a lot of animal activists from within China that are trying to change these practices. Change will happen but perhaps not as quickly as we would like. Still, we need to be patient and supportive of these internal struggles for change.

I love dogs as much as anyone ever could! Having said that, I don't have a huge problem with people eating dogs as long as they are well cared for when living and then killed as quickly and painlessly as possible. I would rather people didn't eat dogs but who are we to judge what is and isn't acceptable to eat? In some countries they don't eat cows and think WE are the terrible ones for doing so.

In American culture we all see eatting dogs as absolutly terrible, but maybe in another culture they think its terrible to eat bacon. We need to accept them, even if they do eat our furry friends.

Yes, Muslims don't eat pigs and East Indians don't eat dogs. It's all just a matter of perspective. I think the more important question is not what kind of meat people eat, but how the animals are slaughtered in the process.

Most people in the US are outraged that people eat dogs in other parts of the world. In reading some of the comments considering dogs as "meat", what you have to understand is that people consume way too much meat. We are not carnivors we are omnivors like the great apes, mostly vegetables and grain and the occasional piece of meat. We, as Americans given dogs the title of "man's best friend" and have our pets sleep with us and spend billions of dollars each year on products and medical attention for them. It's not our fault that we look upon people who eat them as evil people. It's just hard to understand once you've owned a dog that has become part of your family.

We're not talking about whose fault it is. No, I agree, it isn't your fault to think that eating dogs is gross. BUT how can you think that people who have different customs from yours are necessarily evil? East Indians could say the same of Americans for eating their sacred cows. I think the important thing is not to see these practices as a reflection of whether a culture is GOOD or EVIL, just whether they are SIMILAR or DIFFERENT from us. And frankly, there is nothing wrong with being different!

China is an old culture with different ways of viewing the world than we do. Hopefully a smaller global world will help them continue to consider the rights of others be they four legged or two legged. Humane treatment should exist in China for all people and animals.
