For Sale No More: Petco Adopts New Rabbit Policy

Browse News

NEW YORK -- Petco is now hopping to a different tune, as it announced it will cease rabbit sales, and only facilitate adoptions, after Jan. 1, 2009.

All of the rabbits in Petco stores at the start of the new year will still be eligible to find forever homes, just through an expanded adoption program.

"Moving to an all-adoption approach with rabbits is the right thing to do," Petco CEO Jim Myers said in a Nov. 17 release.

"We believe it's good for the animals, good for our business and is consistent with our Think Adoption First philosophy, in which we encourage prospective pet parents to consider adopting an animal rather than purchasing one."

Petco already has an adoption program instated for dogs and cats at its stores, and has partially worked to facilitate rabbit adoptions, as well.

The policy shift is likely to welcome an increased level of partnership with various animal-welfare agencies and local rescue groups, with which Petco already has partnerships, according to the release.

Rabbits, the third most popular companion animal in the United States, have been available for purchase at roughly a third of Petco's 950 stores in recent years. The remaining rabbits were processed through the company's adoption system, according to The SmallAnimalChannel News Division.

Petco already has "strong relationships" with about 70 rabbit adoption groups, including the Minnesota Companion Rabbit Society and the San Diego House Rabbit Society, according to its release.

The franchise will seek to further these relationships, as well as establishing additional partnerships to assist in facilitating more adoptions.

Petco will also work to provide more habitat housing for adoptable rabbits in store, as well as caring for and feeding them.

The announcement has drawn praise from the Humane Society of the United States, which noted the apt timing of the program, given the spike of rabbit births in the springtime.

"The phaseout of rabbit sales by Petco is a great step forward to help homeless, adoptable rabbits across the country," said Adam Goldfarb, an HSUS issues specialist, in a Dec. 4 HSUS release.

"Rabbits are the third-most commonly surrendered animal to shelters after dogs and cats."

By replacing sales with adoptions, Petco, one of the largest pet supply chains in the country, can serve to curb homelessness and surrender rates, the HSUS said.

This is a very responsible thing to do for the little animals. A corporate store is not the place to be adopting out small animals that a lot of people adopt and consider throw away animals.

I feel like they should adopt this policy on all small animals. Matter of fact I don't even really like that some stores (like Petsmart) have adoptive animals on display. Granted this is great exposure for the animal for rescue groups that don't have facilities like some Shelters. My rescue group being one of those...
But I just think displaying them in a store is tempting the 'on the fly' adoptions 'oh cute, let's get him'. Granted I have not adopted an animal from a store display before and hopefully all adoption groups that do that put the people through some sort of adoption process for the animals sake and the adopter's sake. But I think if someone has made a concious decision to get a pet they will go out and look for shelters, and find out about rescue groups to go and visit with them...these are the people who are more likely to have given it some thought and done their homework on bringing home a new pet. Not the ones that just see it in a window at a pet store and/or are talked into it by their kids because they think it is so cute.

It is nice to shut down the avenues that the people that turn a quick buck at the expense of animals. I am sure that their adoption program includes spay and neuter requirement.

About time. Every year shelters are innodated with rabbits that people bought as babies because they were so cute, and when they get big they are unwanted. Its so unfair to the rabbits and to the shelters. This is one of the best things about SCAR, I love that they take ALL animals, fish, birds, little critters, and reptiles and exotics. At least we know that they will have a safe place.

I'm really glad to hear this. I really like shopping at Petco, especially because they stand behind all their products including food. If your animal doesn't like it or the food doesn't work out you can get a refund.

Petco is definitely the leaders in their pro-animal, and their futures. Even though they arealittle pricier than like-stores, Because of their thought processes and community pet support, I would be willing to pay a few more cents for their products.

Wonderful! I am so happy to see responsibility win over capitalism. Bunnies are adorable but only a small percentage like to be cuddled. Thank you Petco for making the right decision!

I was fortunate to have worked for a principal who allowed me to have my pet rabbit in our class for ten years. Ten years! That is how long some lagamorphs live. She was litter trained so she was always hopping around the room. Unfortunately we teachers know all too well that a few weeks after Easter our students are looking for homes for the bunnies they were given during the holiday. People need to do the research before owning pets. Rabbits make wonderful pets for the right owner. I applaud Petco for finally taking this action.

Good idea to set an example for the public and to help promote adoption as a first choice. Maybe they should do the same for the ferrets and birds? Or are they already?

We often don't think about other types of animals for sale in stores as having an overbreeding problem, since most of the focus is on dogs and cats. I suppose it's a good step for the welfare of rabbits.
