For Sale No More: Petco Adopts New Rabbit Policy

Browse News

NEW YORK -- Petco is now hopping to a different tune, as it announced it will cease rabbit sales, and only facilitate adoptions, after Jan. 1, 2009.

All of the rabbits in Petco stores at the start of the new year will still be eligible to find forever homes, just through an expanded adoption program.

"Moving to an all-adoption approach with rabbits is the right thing to do," Petco CEO Jim Myers said in a Nov. 17 release.

"We believe it's good for the animals, good for our business and is consistent with our Think Adoption First philosophy, in which we encourage prospective pet parents to consider adopting an animal rather than purchasing one."

Petco already has an adoption program instated for dogs and cats at its stores, and has partially worked to facilitate rabbit adoptions, as well.

The policy shift is likely to welcome an increased level of partnership with various animal-welfare agencies and local rescue groups, with which Petco already has partnerships, according to the release.

Rabbits, the third most popular companion animal in the United States, have been available for purchase at roughly a third of Petco's 950 stores in recent years. The remaining rabbits were processed through the company's adoption system, according to The SmallAnimalChannel News Division.

Petco already has "strong relationships" with about 70 rabbit adoption groups, including the Minnesota Companion Rabbit Society and the San Diego House Rabbit Society, according to its release.

The franchise will seek to further these relationships, as well as establishing additional partnerships to assist in facilitating more adoptions.

Petco will also work to provide more habitat housing for adoptable rabbits in store, as well as caring for and feeding them.

The announcement has drawn praise from the Humane Society of the United States, which noted the apt timing of the program, given the spike of rabbit births in the springtime.

"The phaseout of rabbit sales by Petco is a great step forward to help homeless, adoptable rabbits across the country," said Adam Goldfarb, an HSUS issues specialist, in a Dec. 4 HSUS release.

"Rabbits are the third-most commonly surrendered animal to shelters after dogs and cats."

By replacing sales with adoptions, Petco, one of the largest pet supply chains in the country, can serve to curb homelessness and surrender rates, the HSUS said.

I think it is good they are promoting rabbit adoption, I never thought of going to a shelter for a small pet until I started volunteering at cvhs with the bunnies. We have some really great little fluffs that I would really love to see find homes, hopefully this makes people more aware of the fact that there are so many shelter bunnies out there to adopt!

I wonder how much of their income is from animal sales. Seems like they'd be doing fine if they stayed in the accessory business.

Finally Petco! With all of the rabbits being surrendered to shelters, there are plenty for Petco too. And all of our rabbits are spayed and neutered prior to adoption.

Adoptions are great, but how do they plan to stop increased population? The rabbit I saved was not purchased to be a pet, if you know what I mean. How do you know there isn't a snake in it's future home?

They should do the same with hamsters, gerbils and mice. There are plenty being born in homes and because of accidents that can be adopted.

I LOVE THIS IDEA!!!!! I am so excited to see the direction PetCO is headed. I saw the postings on all their small animal cages that also stated "look to petfinder." I am glad a CEO is invested in the animals wellbeing rather than money and ongoing overpopulation. Have you seen how many rabbits are in the classifieds from owners who are ready to give these pets away. Our humane society always has a handful ready to be adopted.

Terrific idea but I wish chicks and ducklings would be on the adoption only list also. We live near a very large park that has a fenced in area for farm animals. After Easter has come and gone, people sneak their Easter pets over the fence or take them to the county shelter because the excitement is over. True, they will get better care if lucky but it's not like a purse that you decided against.

Major Kudos to Petco for this new approach to rabbit sales or should I say lack of. Adoption is a much better alternative!

It's great that a large, well-known store recognizes the importance of promoting adoptions rather than just selling animals. There is such a large number of animals of all species who need adopted.

I didn't know people surrendered rabbits to shelters that often. When I was a kid my cousin kept a few rabbits and when they didn't want to take care of them they were dinner. I was absolutely appalled but assumed it was a common practice.

I'm so glad to hear this. My hope is that they will also stop selling the other animals and that the other, larger chain will follow suit. There are so many unwanted small animals in shelters (and many that are simply unwanted but never make their way to shelters, but wind up just getting severely neglected or let outside) that the stores need not sell them. There is always such a spike in sales too when a movie comes out that features a certain animal, then many people quickly tire of them and they are no longer wanted. So sad.

Great job Petco...now how about those other furry critters. I saw full grown guinea pigs two to a small glass aquarium. That is no life. Why not just host adoption days for small furry critters....there are some that need adopting.

Good decision Petco. I got my bunny from a shelter where she was turned in because she got too big. Everyone falls in love with the baby animals but are ready to get rid of them once the "cuteness" wears off.

I am so glad Petco. is doing this! I got my bunny from a Petco. before I knew about rabbit rescues, but after I found out I was really surprised that Petco. wasn't using the rabbit rescues (they seem so proactive with creating Petfinder and donating so much to shelters). Good for you Petco.! I'm definitly going to make it a point to shop there more often!

Nice to see that Petco isn't thinking of its pocketbook, better late than never. I didn't realize that bunnies were the third most popular companion in the USA. Kudos to Petco for raising the awareness of "adoption".

Yes, this is a good thing. I know many buy rabbits and then later after the novelty wears off they just want to be rid of the poor bunny. This should help.

This is great. The word adoption needs to be out there more instead of sales...I think if people hear the word adoption they bond more with the animal because it is like adopting a baby or child to them. If you purchase something it seems to lose value over time and eventually is left behind....

I think this is a great policy. I did not realize that rabbits ranked third in their rate of surrender to shelters. This policy should certainly help with this problem.

I think this is great! Anything to encourage adoption over purchasing a whole new pet is a step forward. I also think a lot of people purchase rabbits before they realize their rather long lifespan, so many are abandoned after a while.

When I heard about this from a friend who works with the House Rabbit Society, I jumped for joy! It's such wonderful news...Petco should have done this a long time ago, but it's better late than never I guess. Now I just hope they will stop the sales of all live animals and only have shelter animals at their store.

This is a great policy that petco has adopted. The Petco by our shelter already takes our rabbits to adopt out for us. It's a great program.

I am so glad that Petco has decided to do rabbit adoptions instead of selling them. There are so many rabbits sitting in shelters that would love a forever home.

Great news--I cringe every year around Easter when I see local pet shops load up on rabbits to sell--I hope others follow suit and I truly believe that all pet stores should sell supplies and work with local rescue groups to adopt homeless pets instead of buying from breeders.

This is definitely a start. Now...if we can get people to think about it before giving the rabbits as gifts at Easter. I'm sure this is one of the biggest times they get surrendered as people aren't truly prepared to care for them.
