Fla. Man May Have to Shed His 50 Snakes

DELTONA, Fla. - Brian Radenberg has asked his neighbors to sign a petition for him. He wants the city of Deltona to know his 50 poisonous snakes are welcome.

Radenberg say he's been collecting snakes since he was five-years-old.

Since then, his love for the critters has grown into something of a hobby. He now holds a poisonous snake license, issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

His rigid adherence to the fish and wildlife laws are what makes his neighbors feel safe.

In accordance with fish and wildlife regulations, the serpents must be locked up at all times.

Radenberg says he always keeps the cages locked because by not doing so, he'd risk losing his permit; Florida Fish and Wildlife can make surprise visits.

Still, a city ordinance says no one may house any poisonous reptiles within Deltona. That leaves officials in a tough spot. They can either take the snakes or make Radenberg get rid of them. Of course, he could always move, too.

For now, he'll fight the law, using responsible pet ownership as his defense.

This is the first time the poisonous reptile ordinance is being questioned in Deltona. If Radenberg's push for an exception is met, he will be setting a new precedent for the city.

Seems like a responsible pet owner to me. I am thankful I am not his neighbor though.

While this man appears to be a responsible owner, the law is there for the many, many others who think it would be 'so neat' to own one or more of these snakes. I do applaud his getting the license and adhering to the laws for safety of both humans and the snakes. I am more concerned with the outcome of this in terms of the other individuals who are not so responsible. It does show us to check the local ordinances for allowed pets.

If he is taking good care of them, he should keep them. It is hard to find an owner that won't harm poisonous snakes.

It's a disgusting hobby to collect a living thing.

Here is an Update from UPI from Febuary 19:

"Fla. man allowed to keep venomous snakes

DELTONA, Fla., Feb. 19 (UPI) -- City officials in Deltona, Fla., have determined they cannot force a local man to get rid of his 50 venomous snakes because the man holds state permits.

Brian Radenberg, 37, was cited by animal control officers in December for keeping the venomous reptiles in violation of a city ordinance barring residents from housing the animals within city limits. But Radenberg challenged the citation and officials determined that no action can be taken against him so long as he holds a permit from the state and follows Florida's official guidelines for keeping poisonous snakes, the Daytona Beach (Fla.) News Journal reported Tuesday.

"That's cool," Radenberg said of the decision Friday. "I had a lawyer send me some ammunition to use, but the city's decision is not shocking. I'm glad they are being understanding."

In response to the decision, the City Commission voted Monday to alter its animal control ordinance to allow residents to keep animals permitted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, WKMG-TV, Orlando, Fla., reported Tuesday."

Well, I said I didn't like snakes but the one in the picture is very pretty. Still wouldn't want to pet one. Seems like this guy is very responsible though. Tough call. I wouldn't want to be his neighbor either though. What kind of precautions are in place in case one of the snakes happens to get out of it's cage? I know he's supposed to keep them locked but still stuff can happen. What's the deal for a fail-safe?

What is the problem? He has the proof that he is responsible so let him keep them.

If he has the piece of paper to show he is qualified then let him keep them.

If he has a license than he should be allowed to keep them.

I don't like snakes myself, but since this man has a license and his neighbors don't have a problem with it then let him be.

Did the state he lives in give him the license? I would think that would rule over the city. If the neighbors don't mind and there has been no trouble, why are they after him to start with?

It is ok to have snakes, but having so many snakes is ridiculous, they don't make that good pets, plus poisonous snakes could bit a kid or something

How residential an area is this guy in? How easy is it for the snakes to get out? If I was a neighbor and had small pets or children I would be especially worried. I don't see the need for keeping so many poisonous snakes even if you can claim they are pets.

Snakes can get out. If they are poisonous then I don't think I would want them in my neighborhood. Not 50 anyway. I don't believe they are trainable like dogs and could be dangerous if they escape.

Didn't this author speak to the snake guy? Snakes harmful to humans are venomous, not poisonous! If the snake guy doesn't know the difference, he shouldn't have venomous snakes. Also, I suspect he won't get to keep them if this is setting a precedent (that no one wants set).

I don't understand the need for anything poisonous as a pet -- especially that many snakes. Seems as though he's following the rules & regulations & taking good care of them. The easy solution would be for him to move, but I think it's safer for everyone if he remains living in an area with strict ordinances. Less chance of an unwanted escape!

As long as the snakes are well-cared for and in good condition, and Radenberg follows all the restrictions as mandated by the Wildlife/Fisheries services (which it seems he has done, stringently), I don't see the problem. It's a little off the norm, but not everyone likes the traditional dog or cat for a pet!

I'm not sure what his reasons for collecting poisonous snakes is.But it sounds like he is trying to follow most of the rules. Is there more to this story or is he a hoarder?

A rule is a rule. If it states that no snakes allowed, then he should obey the rules.

In this instance, I thin this law should be followed. If an exception is made for this man, others who may be less responsible with poisonous snakes may want the same treatment. I would say that unfortunately the man may need to move. He got these snakes knowing that there was an ordinance against them. Sorry.
