Fish food fiasco

WARNING! This story contains information that may not be suitable for some readers.

For background on this story, please see our story “Rendering, Explained.”

A report by AllAboutFeed.net says at least one rendering company sells the byproducts of companion animals to fish farmers in Asia – they raise fish that are later sent to the U.S. for human consumption.

The report found that California based West Coast Rendering disposes many of the Golden State's euthanized pets.

For the most part, renderers aren't allowed to recycle pets – California's case is a unique one. In fact, post mad cow legislation has clamped down on the industry as a whole – limiting who they can sell their products to.

The report explains that pentobarbital, the chemical used in euthanasia, isn't broken down during rendering. The fish are fed the chemical-laden feed then returned to the U.S., where Americans consume them.

The report claims that less than 1 percent of imported seafood was inspected by the FDA last year - and says it's unlikely the FDA tests for pentobarbital.

The FDA says you probably won't get sick from the chemical. But we want to know – how do Americans feel knowing they may have eaten shrimp that were raised on recycled pets.

The govt should mandate that all dead animals be cremated so there is no chance of recycling. This is such a sick thought

I don't want to use recycled pets. It's disgusting. We need to be more independent and quit sending all our businesses to other countries cause it is cheaper. This is one of the prices we pay for cheap.

Unfortunately, this kind of thing is more common than one might think. After reading the article "What's Really in Pet Food", I realized that euthanized "rendered" shelter animals often ends up in pet food. It's just disgusting.

In recent months the American consumer has had to deal with downed animals that get into our children's lunches and unto our dinner tables, with toys laden with lead, with contaminated pet food, with questionable toothpaste....now I read about this and am sickened. Let's all face it and try to do something about it, the FDA as well as the U.S. Department of Agriculture are simply not doing their jobs!

Well, we feel quite disgusted. I'm really surprised we have not all died of some strange disease already. It seems that everything is allowed to get to the consumer & everything is ok until people or animals start getting sick. Then it's, Oh My God, how could this have happened. Wake UP.

I'd be interested to know if the fish that were fed the euthanized/rendered animals were then ended up in pet food. That would be tragically ironic.

Wow. I'm not a big seafood lover, but this will DEFINITELY turn me off of the infrequent trip to a sushi bar! I believe wholly in the food chain and the circle of life, but when humans mess with it - oh man...

This is absolutely gross. And I thought sea food and fish was supposed to be good for you and always try to get farm raised so it does not impact the environment as much. Yuck! More chemicals to worry about.

When researching the food I used to feed my dogs (they always seemed to be getting sick), I found out that "recycled pets" or rendered by products was one of the ingredients in alot of commercial pet food. I threw out a new bag of Purina Beneful food and switched them to Wellness that same day.

This is one time in my life where I am elated that I do not eat anything that comes out of the water. I've often been told oh I was missing so much by not eating seafood products. One less worry for me. Anyhow I agree that the food industry is really doing a poor job here recently on regulations & keeping us safe in general & of our pets on our food products.

People need to get a better handle on the food industry. Start by being vigilant with your own food. Also, tell legislators.

At one time these "rendering" operations were also allowed to take in road kill and make animal feed from it. I don't think I'd want to eat that either.

Ugh, this is really disgusting. It makes me more aware than ever that with increased outsourcing, and few inspections of foreign manufactured products, we really have no idea what kinds of things we are being exposed to now. I have a big case of the heebie-jeebies now! I guess it is just another incentive to is to buy local! Yikes!!!
