First Feline Forgotten

Senator Hillary Clinton has dodged a number of potentially show-stopping bullets during her run for president – but some say the plight of her former cat, Socks, may not be so easy to overcome.

Sources say the black and white tuxedo cat was given to Mr. Clinton's former secretary when he stepped down as leader of the free world.

Having pets in the White House has a long-standing tradition. Martha Washintgon reportedly had cats while her husband was in office, and just about every president since has had either a cat or a dog.

As Senator Clinton tries to soften her image – and make her mark as the first ever female president – she could potentially lose the support of America's pet-friendly voters.

The image she's created is exacerbated by Socks' abandonment – But facing an all male cast of competitors means she needs to appear tough.

But just how tough? Writer Caitlin Flanagan of the Atlantic Magazine says Socks may have been more of an image booster than a family pet.

During a children's lecture about her book “Dear Socks, Dear Buddy: Kids' Letters to the First Pets,” Mrs. Clinton said pets are, “an adoption instead of an acquisition,” - a remark that indicates she doesn't always practice her own wisdom.

I'd rather she just say "I don't like pets" than lie about it. I bet she never even petted Socks.

I don't like it when someone uses animals for a cover-up of their true personality.

Evidently she cared less for the cat than the facade of being a pet owner.

How pathetic. I'm sure Socks is better off. I certainly hope that woman does not end up being our President. I have no use for her or her husband. They're both two-faced.

Socks is probably a lot happier now that he is really a pet and not just a photo op.

I wonder how much attention the cat had before from the Clinton's. I am sure Socks is much better off now.

I don't see the problem here. Yes, she gave up her cat, but she ensured that it went to a decent home. I mean, if she tossed it out on the streets, I'd call that being 'abandoned.' As far as I'm concerned, she still has my vote.

she is insane to begin with. why would you trust her with an animal

Pets are important in the White House. They provide a stress buster in an extremely stressful position. Hillary and Bill have no interest in pets. Pets call for a commitment they are unwilling to make. Socks is better off without them. After all, look what happened to Buddy.

i heard Socks changed to the Republican Party and that was the reason for the Clintons dismissal of the cats services after they left the White House

If they didn't have the time to take care of the pet properly then perhaps it was best to give it to the secretary. Hopefully the cat's being treated well in his new home.

I dont really like that, but I feel that the loss of Socks is more of Bill Clinton's fault because he was the one that had the affair, so he ended up giving Socks away. Hillary had no say in that, and I dont think she should be put as the cause of the problem.

There is something lacking here in this story. The clintons are very busy and their daughter not living at home. They are away from home much of the time. Not good for Socks...It is good Mrs. Clinton was able to find a home that will take care of socks. I bet Socks is happier now.

Politics aside, perhaps it is best she gave up the cat, since being on the campaign trail means she is not spending much time at home to take care of an animal. For the sake of the animal, it was better to find a new home than it be left alone for long stretches of time.

Not a Hillary fan either. Where was her TOUGH self, when she played the TEAR card a few night ago It's all an act. NO MORE CLINTONS IN THE WHITE HOUSE PLEASE. Just like it was an act to have a cat in the white house. I don't think they could take the cat to their next residents because it belonged to someone else the residents.

Let's get off the politica bandwagon. Pets get given away all the time for many different reasons. What matters is that the cat is healthy and happy!

not a hillary fan, but if she wasn't going to care for the cat at least she found it a proper home. this story would not effect my vote unless she has a platform on animal rights laws.

It is one thing to be too busy, but wasn't the family just as busy in the White House. Before you take in a pet, folks need to think long and hard about it. It should be for life of the pet.

And to be honest, are the animals at the White House really pets. Maybe instead of having each new President and family bring in their own pets, there should just be a White House dog and cat and it just lives there forever.

Yes, this is mostly a political story. Yes, I'd vote against people I thougth were animal-unfriendly. But there's not enough info here to say that. Mrs. Clinton was pretty busy when she left the White House, moving to NY and running for Senate and whatnot. I think she, like everyone else, could have benefitted from a warm, furry pet. But if she decided not ... better for the cat to be someplace else. Whether the secretary takes good care of it we don't know.

I disagree. You can't talk about adopting an animal and then cast it aside. That's why they end of in shelters. I'm glad he is in a happy family, but first buddy runs out into the street and is hit and killed by a car and then socks is cast aside. Not responsible owners in my book regardless of who they are.

As long as socks has a loving home, that is the important thing. I think this story is more about politics than about animal neglect or irresposibility.

If they gave the cat to someone they knew would care for it then who cares. Now if they dumped it on the side of the road or gave it to a shelter when they were "done" with it I could understand. I'm sure they very busy lives and don't have as much help as they used to, living in the white house, so giving it to someone that could care for it seemed like the best option.

If she kept the cat and didn't have the time to care for it properly the complaint would be neglect. Sometimes the only caring thing to do is to find another caretaker.
