Sweet story. Engine Company 9 and a good samaritan to the rescue of the ducklings. Interesting that Mommy Duck gave birth in Washington and really good luck that the family was taken to "rehab" and will eventually be set free in the wild far away from the dirt and noise and decidely unnatural environs of the city.

Several miles from my house, on the highway there is a home with a small spring that forms a pond.Last year Mallard ducks had some babies there. This year believe it or not two Canadian Geese have had some babies there.I love it because the owner of the land puts up signs to drivers to be careful for the babies.(This is a highway between to bodies of water.)
Most folks slow down and the babies seem to be doing fine.I think maybe the moms travel soo far and sometimes lay the eggs where they can near water.I think some have labor before they get to the migration spots.Poor things.Kudos for all who help them along.

What an uplifting and happy event -- i'm thrilled for the duck family -- i'm so happy that people cared to get involved and rescue these sweet duckies. How animals and wildlife get into the predicaments they do, only God knows, but thank God all is well.

Wow I am glad the ducks are ok, and thanks to the gal who noticed and did some thing about it.
Most would just not care there thinking is well their ducks, they can care for their selfs!! SO WRONG , just because their furry or fleathery should not mean they dont need help. All animals are like us in alot of ways... People please remember that! You may need their help one day.
GOOD LUCK DUCKYS!

Well said Debra. We always need to take care of our furry & feathered friends. A lot of the predicaments they find themselves in are because of us.

Like the plastic rings that hold cans together. I've seen poor birds with that plastic around their necks. It's terrible to see them struggling to get out of it.

I'm impressed that they even noticed an animal in distress. In our busy lives I'm amazed at how so many people don't notice anything going on around them, or if they do they don't have time to stop and get involved. Yeah for the firefighter who noticed and took the time to help!!

Wildlife is just getting locked out of their habitats by people and construction on every turn. We really need to make an effort to save the forests and ponds for our wildlife.

So very true! Its a shame what we've done to our natural resources & the habitats of all our wildlife. We're making it impossible for them to live.

I've recently seen on TV other duck rescues plus last year around this time a male & female Mallard pair landed in our pool and stayed for several hours, can't help but feel, we humans are infringing on nature so much that non pets are ending up in odd places, wish I had a solution.

I agree. Not just ducks, but there seems to have been an increase in all wildlife rescues. Plus there have been the films of deer running into stores, bears stuck on bridges, etc. Its very sad that we keep moving in on them & expecting them to go elsewhere. Many have run out of places to go.

This story reminded me of a similar incident in our town. A few years ago, our humane society received a call about some ducklings in a storm drain. Our humane officers tried to get them out while city police officers directed traffic to protect our officers. Eventually, firefighters were called in to rescue the ducklings. So, a big round of applause to all firefighters!

I heard about this, that's great they were able to save them. Sometimes ducks make nests if there is a pool in the area, usually first time mothers do this by mistake. Mabye that's why she had her brood there?
