VPI reveals the top 10 pet names of 2010.

For today's pets, names like "Rex" and "Snowball" are relics of the past. Owners are increasingly opting for "people names," reflecting the belief that pets are more than animals -- they're members of the family.

Last week, Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI), the nation's oldest and largest provider of pet health insurance, crunched the names in its database of more than 485,000 insured pets to determine 2010's most popular monikers.

Nearly every dog name on VPI's Top Ten Pet Names list doubles as a popular human name, and several of the more traditional names for kitties, such as "Tiger," decreased in popularity between 2009 and 2010. "Bella" retained its position as the most popular dog name for the second year in a row, and surpassed "Chloe" to assume the second most popular name for cats.

And only 13 of the nearly half a million pets were named "Fido."

Also, for the first time this year, VPI has included the Top 10 Names for exotic pets (birds, lizards, gerbils, rabbits and other assorted pets).

So drumroll please.... here are the winners:

The Top 10 names for dogs in 2010 were:

1. Bella

2. Bailey

3. Max

4. Lucy

5. Molly

6. Buddy

Of course, not all the pet names in VPI's database are as common as Bella and Max. Thousands of VPI policyholders have given their pets names not shared by any other pet on record, such as "Pickle Von Corndog" and "Admiral Pancake." My catahoula mix has the classic "cracked glass" eyes: one eye is blue and the other is half blue/half brown. We thought since she has such a gorgeous iris that should be her name... Iris!
