Fennec Fox as a Pet

Browse News

You may not be familiar with the Fennec Fox, but this furry little gremlin is fast becoming a popular pet.

Believed to be an ancestor of the Chihuahua, Fennecs are the world's smallest canine. They belong to the fox family, a fact some say means they shouldn't be allowed as pets.

26 states allow the foxes, many of which require an exotic pet license. Agility and cunning are the animals' best defense – and an endless supply of energy means that if they escape, there's little chance of being caught again.

The “Desert Fox” is native to Northern Africa, where it's regularly hunted for it's pelt. As a result, Fennecs have been listed on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) list of threatened animals since 1985.

But increased breeding in the United States could change that. Owners claim to have taught them to fetch and even use a litter box.

They weigh up to three pounds, and with fur that covers even the bottoms of their feet, Fennecs are pretty cute.

This isn't the type of pet you'd want to carry around the mall. Fennecs require elaborate enclosures – they like to jump, scurry and burrow. So pet lover beware – do your homework before buying one.

Do you think this endangered species should be allowed as a pet? Tell us what you think by posting comments under this story.

There is no way this animal should be imported or bred as pets. Of course there will soon be crossbreds, then what? Fooles? Fennipoos? Not to mention that its small size will make it attractive to families who want a small dog for the kids. People, please, use some reason!

The foxes are cute and I love all animals but I think that they should not be family pets. People don't realize with some of these animals how much it takes to care for them and then the animal suffers from neglect so they should not be allowed in any state as a pet.

It's great that they may be making a come back, but it doesn't sound like they would be appropriate pets. People have enough trouble caring properly for cats and dogs!

Its bad enough that we have a problem caring for dog and cats, why create an even larger problem by allowing people to care for exotics and endanger species. Absolutely No!

Only someone who has had special training, should be allowed to have these animals. They are endangered. They need a chance.

These should not be kept as pets. another showcase for someones selfish benefit. Let these and all exotic creatures live where they are intended to live. In other words leave them alone.
There are horse, dog, cats, birds, fish, etc, you name it, if you want a pet and you know these are domesticated.

Endangered animals should be bred so that they can be returned to the wild, not used as pets! And I hope that there are very strong regulations that make people create elaborate structures for them to use. Wild animals as pets is not a good idea!

I’ve had the privilege of holding one fennec fox from a previous clinic that I worked at. They are cute and definitely tiny. I personally feel it depends a person’s situation and capabilities of whether or not they have the ability and time to take care of one. Look at the amount of endangered animals now that are becoming extinct because there are not enough people or organization to keep up after them. If I had the right care equipment, time, money and is legal where I’m at I would take one. I definitely think a person should study about this kind of animal before taking one in, considering the habits are slightly different(little hyper, nocturnal) as well as the nutrition it needs (its an omnivore).I'm not saying that just anyone should be allowed, but for someone with knowledge and skill. Why do average people or just anyone hold wolf hybrids? They are illegal and can be dangerous. At least the fennec fox, not as threatening, having fewer chromosomes than an average pet, it can be more difficult and less likely to make a hybrid.

I would have to agree with everyone on this...a wild animal should not be considered as a pet. They are really cute but still probably shouldn't be pets.

An endangered species should not be a pet. A wild animal of ANY kind should not be pets. Get a dog or a cat! The shelters are filled with loving animals that need good homes!

Yes, May of you feel that because they are endangered, they should not be owned as pet's, So that is your idea, then we should just let them all be killed off for fur coats right. If you recall the American Bison was killed off from the wild and the only ones that were left lived on farms, now we have wild herds in the US again, thinks to PEOPLE owning them. Thank about it People, they are hunted for thier coats, and we have the power to own then and keep them safe, and breed them. I feel that is a person, can get the right information on how to care for an animal, and can prove they have the means to do so then let them own it. Do you all think the Dog started out as a pet, HO NO, so what is the differance here.

The Fennec Fox, in my opinion, should not be kept as a pet. Ever so often some animal looks cute or adorable and humans decide to domesticate them. Look what happened with the pot bellied pig! When they grew from the cute piglet stage to hundreds of pounds, many people could not keep them. Although the Fennec will not grow like this, they are a wild breed and not called a fox by accident. What happens when a child is exposed to a fox bite? What happens when the person gets scratched? I believe, the handwriting is on the wall even before the controversy starts.

Let the wild animals run free. Man has domesticated dogs so there is no reason to take a wild fox and keep it as a pet.

No ,these endangered species should not be allowed as pets... Absolutely NOT! These animals are wild creatures and should be kept as such. There is no reason to try to domesticate these animals when there are millions of deserving animals in shelters that would make a much better pet.

I think the animal should be allowed as a pet only to responsible people. By doing so, it could help get the animal off the endangered species list since people have an incentive to care for their own property.

these are cute little things but if your aren't ready to be prepared the animal will run away and could be harmed because it isn't adapted to life in the wild.

Can we think of anymore stupid ideas for making a wild animal a domestic pet? Foxes have no recognized rabies vaccine--who will monitor the bite cases and there will be as these are wild animals. We continue to be rediculous in our effort to create more "pets" that are novelties--let concentrate on the ones we're killing every minute--heck every second in America because they were thrown away .

Maybe bringing them indoors will help prevent their extinction. If they're endangered let's face it - they're not doing all that great in the wild with man as a significant predator. I'd prefer to see them in their natural habitat, too, but maybe those who care and are bringing them in are helping to establish them better and bringing attention to their plight.
