Fennec Fox as a Pet

Browse News

You may not be familiar with the Fennec Fox, but this furry little gremlin is fast becoming a popular pet.

Believed to be an ancestor of the Chihuahua, Fennecs are the world's smallest canine. They belong to the fox family, a fact some say means they shouldn't be allowed as pets.

26 states allow the foxes, many of which require an exotic pet license. Agility and cunning are the animals' best defense – and an endless supply of energy means that if they escape, there's little chance of being caught again.

The “Desert Fox” is native to Northern Africa, where it's regularly hunted for it's pelt. As a result, Fennecs have been listed on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) list of threatened animals since 1985.

But increased breeding in the United States could change that. Owners claim to have taught them to fetch and even use a litter box.

They weigh up to three pounds, and with fur that covers even the bottoms of their feet, Fennecs are pretty cute.

This isn't the type of pet you'd want to carry around the mall. Fennecs require elaborate enclosures – they like to jump, scurry and burrow. So pet lover beware – do your homework before buying one.

Do you think this endangered species should be allowed as a pet? Tell us what you think by posting comments under this story.

this is a very informative article, why would we consider these pets? The local shelter has lovely pets to adopt.

I haven't enough information about their disposition and how well they fare living as pets to reply. If the species is endangered will the upsurge cause them to be depleted further. If the breeding for pets helps save the species, then do it, but I feel that creating new pets is questionable since there seems to be not enough owners for the ones already here.

THESE ANIMALS DO NOT SMELL! The only time they emit an odor is when you do not keep their cage/litter box clean or they are scared. So you must not be doing a great job as a pet owner if any one of these things are true.

dogs or cats at shelters need homes. these animals are wild so please leave them that way!! leave these animals to particular breeders who will train them for the wild and increase their population just enough. pretty soon if these continues, we will be overrun with the fox

That is not true. Most breeders spay and neuter their animals, so we do not need to worry because these breeders practice population control.

It sounds like these are more trouble than their worth, which means many people will get them and then lose them or release them to the wild. Stick with a dog or cat, please!

Not a pet....let these animals be what they are intended to be. Left alone and living in the environment that are in. In nature not an enclosure or someone's purse.

These are not pets. Why isn't mankind satisfied with dogs, cats, pocket pets? What if one gets loose in a state with cold harsh winters...being a desert animal, that would be sure death.

I have adopted a Fennec and they are as great as any puppy out there. Sure they are more responsibility and have more wild instincts, but since they are rare and NOT endangered, we would do well to re-populate them before they BECOME endangered. And breeders will breed them and sell them to anyone, so wouldn't you rather someone like me who is well educated and will give them love owns one?

If they are rare, it is brazen for you to claim to be educated as to their care. Status seekers are unnecessary to an exotic animal.

These foxes are not the ancestors of the Chihuahua. The Chihuahua, like all other domestic dogs, are descended from the wolf. These foxes ahould not be pets.Tthey are wild and belong in the wild. Leave them be and adopt a nice dog, maybe a chihuahua.

I'd just like everyone who wants a pet to go to a shelter and rescue one; don't take one from the wild. That being said, if you live in the environment of the fennec fox and slowly develop a pet-type relationship with it, I'm OK with that. But I doubt in a US city a Fennec is going to suddenly burrow into your backyard.

Endangered species--hmmm--the question is are we hurting or harming the species as a whole by keeping them as pets. Yes, they're cute, and unusual, but is that the only reason for buying an animal? No. There are too many exotics already in need of rescue without adding a whole new type to the mix.

I like that thier numbers are rising but they are wild for a reason and a desert fox in a home what are they gonna do, it sounds unfair that they lose all that space for a home, that's a huge habitat difference.

In order to have an exotic pet you need an exotic pet license. And if that is like the wild game license you need to prove you have the proper set up for what ever you get. So I guess this would be OK and maybe it would get them of the endangered list. They are adoriable. And like another comment, some people have aleady adopted some animals from a shelter and if the would like and exotic pet it should be OK.

Fennec Fox are rare but not endangered. I think that if you do your research and have enough room that they don't feel caged but welcomed into a home then it should be fine. If it was confined to a small cage and just show off to people saying ooohh i have one then yes that is wrong but to have one and love it as a family member that is different. I understand that there are many dogs, cats and other domesticated animals already but to have some domesticated wild animals doesn't hurt. I also understand that there are so many dogs and cats that need homes but what about the people that give a lot of these homeless animals homes plus buy some exotic animals?

these animals should not be sold as "pets". the people selling them & the ones buying them should pay a fine & do jail time. Shame on them for caging a wild animal. for once think of the animal's well being, not your desire to have something unusual

I do not think foxes should be pets no matter how much it looks like a cute dog. I have an exotic bird and after having her in the family for 3 years I have realized that she will never truly fit in in my home. She belongs in the rain forest and is not meant to be a pet. I see the upside in saving an endangered species from complete extinction, but at what cost to the poor animals? The Fennec Fox would never be the same as it was in the wild, just like my parrot.
