FDA: Dog Diet Pill OK

Browse News

NATION – About a year ago, the FDA approved the first diet pill for dogs, which was developed in response to research that found 20-30 percent of dogs in the U.S. are overweight.

Slentrol is a Pfizer product that reduces appetite and fat absorption. The FDA's director of veterinary medicine says the product is a welcome addition to animal therapy, because of the health risks associated with obesity.

Excess weight increases the chances your dog will suffer from heart disease, respiratory probems and diabetes.

According to the FDA, an estimated 5 percent of dogs in the U.S. are obese, while 20-30 percent are overweight. In the UK, researchers say 40 percent of dogs are overweight, indicating weight is becoming just as prevalent in dogs as it is in humans.

Scientists say there's a direct link between obesity in humans and their pets.

Those in opposition, like the RSPCA, say the drug is not the best option, and that reduced feeding and more exercise are the best bet. There are also diet foods your pet can eat. They say that switching your pet from a carbohydrate based food may aid in weight loss moreso than the daily drug.

By the way, Slentrol cost from $1-2 per day, and is a liquid given orally. It's for dogs only. Treatments can last from 1 to 12 months.

How would you ensure your dog's weight stays under control?

I just saw the ad for this in my newspaper and I couldn't believe it! I guess it was just a matter of time before this came out for our "pets". I personally have a chubby pup and I would not give this to her! I know what the prescription people ones do to people, there is absolutely no way I would give this to my beloved dog!!! A pill doesn't fix things. Hard work and exercise does.

As with people we are turning to drugs instead of diet and exercise. Some pets may be so much overweight they would need to get started, but I would worry about side effects.

I'd just feed the dog less and try to get it moving more.

I agree Satana, our cat was overweight because she's indoors and i'm sure does not get the exercise she needs, so we just limited her food, put her briefly on diet food (which she loved too) and she has lost the weight. It really wasn't that hard. I just can't agree with diet pills for pets.

I can't imagine giving a dog a diet pill. Our dog Bondi was overweight when we got him. We simply gave him regular meals of a good food and he dropped pounds right away. With the right amount of exercise and a good diet, a dog shouldn't be overweight. If they are, there might be a medical reason.

This has to be the most rediculous thing I've heard. Talk about in it for the money. Just give your dog less food, light formula food or less table scraps. It's very easy. Take them for more walks.

Why would you ever give your dog a diet pill. We know that the ones that they make for humans are bad for us and are probably bad for the animals also. Just put it on a diet food and give it exercise. That is all that it needs.

Dogs in our country are overweight just like a large percentage of our population. I don't think that we should be giving our dogs diet pills. Don't give them scraps and start taking them for walks. This would help their human companions as well. Exercise is the ticket.

Dogs being overweight is OUR problem! When we feed them correctly and give them plenty of exercise, they won't need a pill! Diet pills in humans have many side affects so I feel these would as well!

Twenty to thirty per cent of America's dogs are overweight. Not surprising. We spoil and overfeed our dogs, no doubt about it. The canine population is catching up to their human companions. Maybe Slentrol works, maybe it doesn't. We all know that diet and exercise for our animal friends, as well as ourselves, is the answer to the problem. More work but....

I would prefer that my pet eats less and exercise more than give it a diet pill. The owners need to take reponsibility for their animals weight problems.

Wow--20-30% of the dogs in U.S. overweight. What a surprise. FDA approved drug--read the news folks and run for the hills. Put pooch on a diet and take him/her on long long walks. Problem solved.

Dogs that need to diet are more fortunate than people in the same situation ~ dogs can have their diet and exercise controlled by someone else every day. Which means, we can help our pet by feeding it a lighter diet, and taking it for a walk!

I wouldn't give my dog meds to control his weight. If the dog is overweight there is no one to blame but yourself. You control his food, treats and exercise, it is your responsibility.

Society relies on too many drugs to cure every ailment. The best remedy (safer and cheaper) is cut back on the food and walk. And that goes for both dogs and humans.

vet recommended low cal food increase the excerise is a start. I also read the therapy animal business does excerise, swimming and even massaging for the over weight dog. Has good data on obesity in dogs.. Some of the therapy you could do at home as well.

From what I understand Diet pills for humans are a hazard to the health in most cases. Dog diet pills I would assume would be the same... before using I would check with my vet..

why is this a issue?? a little less food and low cal food would help. Along with increased excerise. I bet you would find the owner would loose a couple pounds with the excerise increased as well. This would be a good beginning

Exactly, I thought it was so true how they said that "Scientists say there's a direct link between obesity in humans and their pets." Well if they aren't getting enough exercise, it's likely their pets aren't either.
