Fallen Soldier's Puppy Comes Home

Browse News

CALIFORNIA – The mother of a fallen soldier says except for pictures, a puppy named DJ is all she has left of her son's legacy.

19-year-old Alex Varela died in May of 2007, when the vehicle he was riding in was hit by a roadside bomb in Iraq. His mother, Rinda Pope, says her son was caring for an Army guard dog who gave birth to a puppy named DJ.

The dog was the only survivor of its litter, and it became clear to Rinda that getting the little dog stateside was what Alex would have wanted.

With the help of Alex's friend and fellow soldier, PFC Matt Alford, Operation Puppy Love was born.

But in wartime, transporting a puppy home isn't the Army's top priority – Pope and Alford were short on ideas.

Soon enough though, Alex's entire squadron got in on the project – and with the help of a local contractor and Lt. Tom Hickey, the soldiers were able to get DJ on a flight home.

On Jan. 5th, DJ landed at Dulles International Airport. A group of volunteers came together to make sure she made the remainder of the trip – a cross country trek from Washington D.C. to Orangevale, Ca. The volunteers were escorted by Defenders of Freedom and The Patriot Guard Riders.

The escort arrived soon after the holiday. A full crew of motorcycles with a minivan in tow. And inside was the little piece of her son's legacy that Rinda Pope had been waiting for.

It was mission complete following DJ's arrival. As for her mother, it is believed she is still serving in Iraq.

I am so glad that the mother was able to get the puppy to the U.S. It must be a comfort to her that she can have at least this connection with her son who is gone. Bless her and her son who gave his life for our country!

Companion animals mean so much to our soldiers. I have read many stories and have seen many pictures of Americans taking care of animals in war zones. It is truly a blessing that this mother was able to bring home a pup that clearly meant so much to her son. All of the people involved were not just helping this pup find a forever home, they were honoring her son and the sacrifices he and his family made for all of us. Many service members are forced to surrender their animals when called to duty. Some do not have family or friends to care for their pets when they deploy. Although nothing can replace the loss of her son, it is wonderful that so many came through to give this grieving mother something that had become so important to her son. I am deeply sorry for her loss but hope she finds some peace in raising this puppy in her son's honor.

I saw this on TV and it was so bittersweet. How sad for that young man to lose his life, but it sounds like he led a very admirable one.

Hopefully, his pup will help his family cope with the loss.

I heard about this story a while back...and it's great to hear that things worked out. It's amazing the bond a person can have with an animal, even when it belonged to her son and she had never met it before. Glad to have a happy ending here. =)

That's a great thing that all those volunteers did.

I'm glad that this soldier's mother was able to get the pup he had been caring for. I'm sure it was a difficulty process bringing this little guy home from Iraq. I think it is what her son would have wanted. Sad but nice story.
