Facebook Connects Lost Cat with Owners

Browse News

NEW YORK -- Though the stray cat had a microchip, his owners' contact information was out-of-date.

So Amber Wallin, of the Animal Humane Society's Coon Rapids shelter, in Coon Rapids, Minn., was set to put the male, adult cat up for adoption, until she had a fleeting thought -- why not try searching on Facebook for people with the same name as the owners' listed on the microchip.

Shane and Nicole Meide had just joined the social networking Web site one week before Wallin tried to reach out to them.

It turns out, their timing couldn't have been better -- Wallin found Shane Meide's private profile, and sent him a message.

"Four or five hours later I got a response from Shane, saying 'Oh my God, you found Bob,' " Wallin recalled.

The pair exchanged numbers, and now, two years after he disappeared from his family's East Bethel, Minn., home, the cat, Bob, is back home with his family.

Wallin said it was the first time she has utilized Facebook, or any other online site, to reunite lost pets and their owners.

"I just thought, 'You know, it's a shot in the dark, but why not just give it a go?' Facebook is such a popular site," she said.

Bob had previously arrived at the Twin Cities shelter in "good shape," Wallin said, noting that someone had clearly taken pity on the stray, feeding him regularly.

Wallin said she knew she had to be wary when operating on Facebook, and that she could not assume someone was who he or she claimed to be. But in 2007, the Meides had filed a "missing pet" report with the Humane Society, so Wallin used that information to correctly identify them.

Bob's life with his family has since returned to normal, Wallin said. Shane and Nicole Meide were also thrilled to have their cat back -- as clearly evidenced by Shane Meide's profile picture of a reclining, peaceful looking Bob.

"It's definitely very unique," Wallin said. "By no means have we been able to reunite all other strays and their owners through this method."

She recommended that people stay up-to-date on their pets' identification tags, and that if they move or change their number, to update their animals' microchip information, as well.

What a great idea she had to not give up and try this! And an important reminder to all owners of microchipped animals to make sure your information is updated if something changes!

That's so cool. I'm so glad she though of that and were able to get the cat back to his family. After so long it just seems like a miracle that was meant to happen.

It is amazing how great communication lines are, and how we can achieve what we do, including the worst side of a rainbow.
Glad that the lines of communication crossed and all worked out.

It's important to keep the microchip information up to date. And it's just wonderful how Facebook was able to help reunite the owners with their pet.

Good for Bob and the humane society! I think that animal shelters are frequently too quick to jump to the conclusion that a pet needs rescueing and re-homing. If more effort went into looking for the previous home, there would be more homeless pets in homes instead of at shelters. Think out of the box and see if you can link up your lost stray with the previous family. Just spay or neuter it first before giving it back!

Great idea. I may have to try this for Amber my porch stray. She obviously belongs to somebody. I too will be very careful in how I go about the working and making sure if anyone comes forward that they are indeed the owner of her.

Bob the cat is back home again because of the hard work and dedication of the shelter worker. It is hard to understand why caring people go to the trouble and expense of microchipping their animals and then don't keep the all important contact information up to date.

The biggest and as far as I can see the only problem with microchipping is that people don't keep the information up to date. It's a great story but I can't tell you how many animals cross both mine and animal services path with a microchip with out of date information.................................Dennis

Thanks so much to the shelter worker who went above and beyond to help reunite them. This is als a good reminder to never give up hope. I'm sure the family moved long time after the cat disappeared and probably never thought that they would ever find him again. And another reminder to anyone who finds a lost pet - please take it to you vet of closest shelter to check for microchip
