Extremism in Protesting Research on Animals

Browse News

LOS ANGELES –- In today’s world, extremism in protesting research on animals is increasingly commonplace. At least one scientist has left the field recently, fearing for the safety of his family. Still other scientists remain steadfast, committed to the work they perform.

In the 1980s and 1990s, scientific study organizations like the University of California, Los Angeles, began fortifying their research facilities to prevent activists from committing acts of sabotage.

In the past, activists had successfully gone so far as to steal test animals, and even burned facilities down.

For years, the “Fort Knox” tactic has worked but only spurred activists to find other ways to stop animal testing.

The emergence of the Internet has provided extremists the resources they need to take the fight to the next level –- and today they routinely go after the scientists themselves.

They do so by publicly posting home addresses so that others might mobilize and protest at the scientists’ homes. In some cases they threaten to burn down homes or commit acts of violence.

The latest case involves UCLA researchers and a group of protestors that allegedly belong to the Animal Liberation Front, the Animal Liberation Brigade and UCLA Primate Freedom.

Web sites for these groups allege that they are working against not only the scientific bodies that oversee animal testing, but the researchers –- vivisectionists as they are called by protestors –- whose job it is to study live animals. (Eds. note:dictionary.com defines vivisection as “the action of cutting into or dissecting a living body”).

Edythe London is one such scientist. She studies the effects of nicotine and methamphetamines on the brain at UCLA, using non-human primates to do so.

It turns out her father died from the effects of smoking.

In late 2007, her home was nearly destroyed when vandals belonging to the A.L.F. broke a window in her home, inserted a hose in the opening and flooded the residence. In all, damages totaled between $20,000 and $30,000.

In a rebuttal written for the UCLA Web site, she said, “It is through work like ours that the understanding of addiction expands and gives rise to hope that we can help people like my father live longer, healthier lives.”

That argument hasn’t convinced protestors to end their tactics.

In other cases, a Molotov cocktail-like device was left under one scientist’s car. Still others have been awakened in the middle of the night to masked protestors banging at their doors –- frightening children and parents alike.

After months of this treatment, one researcher gave up his research altogether, claiming he didn’t want to further put his family in danger.

In defense of their employees, the California Regents –- the body that oversees the state’s research facilities –- filed a lawsuit against five alleged extremists, the A.L.F., the A.L.B. and UCLA Primate Freedom.

In the short term, a restraining order was placed against the five, but as Animal Liberation Press Officer Dr. Jerry Vlasak said in a statement, the effect of that will be limited.

“UCLA accomplished absolutely nothing in court … ” he said. “And all but five picketers can continue their protests against the atrocities being committed by primate vivisectors on the UCLA campus.

“Even the five activists named … have been given such limited restrictions that they will barely notice the difference,” he said.

Vlasak, a former researcher himself, believes in the extreme measures groups like his use -– and even went so far as to tell the Washington Post that physically hurting those responsible wouldn’t be wrong.

"If killing them is the only way to stop them," he said, "then I said killing them would certainly be justified."

With such ardent beliefs behind the defense of animals, it seems unlikely that a lawsuit will stop activists. But the scientists involved remain undeterred, too.

“I have devoted my career to understanding how nicotine, methamphetamine and other drugs can hijack brain chemistry and leave the affected individual at the mercy of his or her addiction,” said London. “We must not allow these extremists to stop important research that advances the human condition.”

Obviously, violence is not the answer, to either sides of the story. The protesters should be stopped, but not violently. Animal testing should be stopped, but not violently.

Extremists(that's you PeTA and ALF members....PCRM as well) disgust me.

Try to remember that humans are animals as well. Stop being hypocrites.

While I don't condone violence against the researchers (although it has ad some effectiveness), I am very much against invasive animal research. Especially when it is for something like smoking!! It is not ethical to torture and kill other animals to promote the survival of our species, A highly overpopulated species to boot!

I have no sympathy for London or any other so called scientists who confine animals to years of misery, lonliness, invasive tests. Their confinement drives them insane; their confinement is inhumane. If London is so dedicated to her cause, perhaps a fellow researcher should use London as a test subject; after all, using a human would produce much more reliable results.

I urge everyone to join PCRM (PCRM.org) as doctors opposed to animal testing find alternate solutions without using animals. It is a great organization and does not endorse violence in their fight against the use of live animals in medical schools or in any other medical experimentation.

I'm extremely against vivsection, but I refuse to particpate in violent protests. Violence always loses the cause & thanks to protesters like these, it gives people like me a bad name!

Like the people protesting abortion, the anti-vivisectionists use violent means to try to stop what they see as violence. Fighting evil with evil (if animal testing is evil, and I often think it is when it reaches extremes) in no way improves things -- it just adds to the total evil in the world. And the kind of harm these protesters are inflicting can't be called anything but evil, no matter how self-righteous the instigators may feel.

does anyone else find it odd that a lot of the people fighting for the rights of animals (and humans) completely disregard the rights of anyone disagreeing with them and even resort to violence and murder. and these people want to stop abuse and violence?

true som of the people fighting for animal rights are that way but I know plenty that will just sit and talk it out. they make choices not to use products tested on animals and that is how they make a differance. it's the loud ones you see in the news.

I think animal research is cruel and believe it should be illegal, but these people are going to far. They shouldn't endanger the welfare of these scientists and especially their families. I think people will be more likely listen if we address this issue in a more appropriate and safe manner.

i do not agree with their methods. they need to protest peacefully.
I realize that unfortunately there are some things that can only be tested on animals. that is the unfortunate reality of life. If we are ever going to rid the world of cancer, aids and the like. I do think they can be more humane and test other ways but at some point they wil have to test on live subjects.
The protest group is luck they were not shot them selves for disturbing a residence.

Some people get really worked up about these things. I admit that sometimes when I read stories about what kinds of things go on in the facilities, it really makes me upset. And the initial reaction is that these people who are administering suffering on the animals should feel what the animals are feeling, which is really pain and death. I feel just as strongly as the next person who loves animals. But I know I can't go out and hurt some scientist because of it. The only way to stop it is by petitions, and education. The more people know, the more the companies will have to respond. Boycott those products, and spread the word.

I guess these people can't figure out what they do is no better than what they're protesting. It's like those against abortion, killing the doctors that do them. Isn't killing, still killing? How does hurting scentists, stop them hurting animals? Makes no sense to me. The idea of protesting is to make people aware of what is happening.

This needs to be addressed in a non-violent manner. When these types of things happen, it just makes society unwilling to listen.

Violence is never the answer in any situation. I believe it discredits animal rights activists. There are those that go about it the "right" way but unfortunately some people can't see past the small faction of fanatics. When they hear "animal rights activist" they immediately think of the fanatics and dismiss anything else.

Animal testing is both cruel and un-necessary. Testing on animals is inconclusive as their bodies differ from humans and there are alternatives to that that sort of heartless cruelty. We need more people to speak up for those that can not speak for themselves and practice what they preach.

I am not in favor of animal testing for cosmetic products & i'm not too thrilled with animals being used to test household & food products. Medical research is a delicate uncomfortable issue, I don't feel good about the animals being used, but I know that medicines & medical treatments sometimes have to test on animals before they can test on people.

I understand the necessity of research and why it is important. I really think that the extremists need to leave these people alone. They are only doing their jobs after all. Because of animal research, there are cures for cancer, diabetes, and many other diseases. People need to be a little more open-minded.

I may in the minority here, but I understand that many medicines that we all use today are made from animal bi-products. Medicines like my mother's diabetic injections are derived from animals. I think it's important to keep testing in order to find cures for diseases that affect humans as well as animals. Unfortunately a lot of animal rights groups don't see anything but the animals and most of them don't care about the millions of people in our own country alone that are alive today because of testing that led to a cure or medications because of that testing. Fanatics on any extreme end of things are usually not helpful.

you can't protect the animals if no one is taking you seriously. No one takes a "crazy" person seriously. Lets face, flooding a person house or making terroristic threats towards their families is crazy. I guess they are saying humane treatment for animals but lets terrorize the people?? I hate animals testing and they are working on ways to eliminate it and many companies have.

I am all for animal rights & don't wear fur. I chose to buy products that aren't tested on animals & are safe to use around pets. This, this is just going too far. Especially when Vlasak comes right out & states that "Physically hurting those responsible wouldn't be wrong!" SICK. Some of these people might have started out w/ the right intention but it's definately gone too far when they start hurting families & burning houses etc. Kind of starts sounding like a cult following sort of thing. I am sure they love animals but they have forgotten the main principle. To be responsible & care for our pets & animals. To stand up & speak for them, to be their voice. This is not what the animals of the world would be saying or doing on their own behave! You can make changes in the world without being violent. People that hurt people are the same as the people who hurt animals=violent! Both should be punished.

Why do people protest violently? It makes you seem barbaric, if you ask me. I want all animals to be treated with the utmost respect, but threatening people who are trying to make a better life for you and your family and are just doing their job seems hateful and nasty. You can protest, but do it with a little class, will you?

Scientists do all the can to not test on animals. They use cell models if possible. They don't want to test on animals. It is horrible that we are losing great scientific minds because of fear. However, do you want to sign up to test an investigational drug before it has been tested on any living creature? I didn't think so. But you do want there to continue to be advances in treatments/cures for the diseases and conditions that plague us like cancer right? I thought so. I wish there was another way but at this point there isn't. I do not however support any animal testing of beauty products. Violence is never the answer though.

Excellent point. How many diseases have we found either a cure for, or medication to help control because of testing? If the violence continues to get a slap on the wrist it will keep happening. The extremist kinds of protestors should be jailed for their crimes.

I agree with you there. I hate that animals have to be tested on, but in some cases, it can't be avoided, and I don't see anyone refusing to take life saving treatment when that treatment was tested on animals. I just ask that any testing that absolutely has to be done is done in a humane way and limits the amount of suffering to any life form.

There is no sense in those members of these animal rights groups scaring families and harming property. If you are part of a group that wishes to make a difference then there are much better ways of going about it than criminal activities. You are not making yourselves look any better and in fact are bring the credibality of the orginazation down. A friend of mine used to donate to some animal rights groups before until she found out that they terrorized the scientists and their families, then she stopped supporting them.

Nothing justifies that. I'm sorry. Whatever your views on animal testing, medicine can't progress without the use of animals. Maybe someday we can make good enough live human tissue for such experiments, but that day isn't here. If we want safe drugs and medical procedures, animals have to be the pioneers. It's not like you can legally or morally induce Alzheimer's in any (even willing) human and see which compounds do and don't make them drop dead of an aneurysm. Animal research might be unpopular on this forum, but at this stage in the game, it's necessary.

I agree with you. These extremists could step up to the plate & consent to be tested in place of the animals if they feel that strongly about it. The scientists could use willing alive or deceased humans for these tests. For some reason I don't think these extremest would actually do it but it's an option they have. They don't need to use violence & hurt people. If they are going to hurt people to save animals then let the scientists test on them. That would hurt but save the animals!
