NEW YORK – A Mohopac, New York man faces misdemeanor animal cruelty charges for neglecting his exotic cat, an African Sevral – like the one you see here.

A passer-by saw the cat as it tried to jump out a window. The witness noticed the animal looked emaciated and called the police.

When Carmel police arrived at the suburban home they found it in squalid conditions – in some places covered in feline fecal matter.

Local SPCA officials say the cat's feces contained large quantities of styrofoam, indicating it was eating anything it could find.

The cat is owned by Louis Pinto, a 54 year-old with prior drug and animal related charges.

The 9 year-old feline seized Sunday has been signed over to the SPCA. Officials are trying to find it a home in a zoo or sanctuary.

It's so horrible to see these majestic creatures being abused. They shouldn't be allowed to be kept as pets.

I used to volunteer at the Wildlife Waystation in Southern California. They are an organization that tries to help and take in these kinds of animals when no one else is able to. They, unfortunately, are currently in need of help themselves so they can update and continue to provide for the animals in their care. A link to their story:

They also have another great article on the site about why there are so many of these kinds of cats in their care, former pets who should never have been pets.
