EU To Ban Use Of Cat, Dog Fur

BRUSSELS – The European Commission reports that it has adopted a proposal to ban the trade of cat and dog fur within the European Union (EU).

The Commission stated that it has found evidence of dog and cat fur being disguised as synthetic and other types of fur for sale on the open market.

The law, which will go into effect in early 2009, will ban the import, export and sale of dog and cat fur.

The move will also standardize laws already in place in a handful of EU states, as well as establish a system of information on known fur traders.

According to the report, EU citizens have requested this change through letters and petitions, since the fur has been found not only in clothing but in children's soft toys.

Systems will be in place to detect fur that has been altered in some way, like through dying. However, no word has come out on how the ban will be enforced from there on.

Ministers believe the majority of the fur is coming in from China. At the time of this story, 15 EU states currently employ regulations on the subject.
