Easter Weekend Rescue Saves Nearly 60 Rabbits

Browse News

ATLANTIC COUNTY, N.J. -– Just in the nick of time, dozens of rabbits being bred and sold in New Jersey were rescued on the eve of Easter Sunday.

The Atlantic County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals removed 57 rabbits from an Egg Harbor Township residence on Saturday, where conditions were deplorable, officials said.

According to officials, the elderly resident was breeding and selling the rabbits in the Garden State when he apparently became overwhelmed with the care of so many animals.

The man has not yet received any summonses for keeping the rabbits in cramped cages, without adequate food and water, or bedding to keep them warm.

Many of the rabbits were in need of medical attention, reported officials.

I never wanted a rabbit. had a friend who had lots and they just never seemed as good as my dog and cats. But they are cute. Still prefer chocolate ones.

Well they got them away from the man that really doesn't know how to take care of these animals, but are they going to good homes? How many others are out there doing the same thing, trying to make a quick buck. People need to find better ways to make money. these animals end up suffering for this and rescues get overwhelmed by getting so many.

i think it is just sick how many cases you see on tv and hear about in the news about people breeding animals and then not being able to handel it when it gets to be to much they should never let it get that far there is a thing called getting your pet fixed to prevent that problem i can not stand animal neglect and abuse.

Another hoarding story, or another "puppy mill" story. The profit motive is a powerful motivator, much to the detriment of helpless animals.

This is the problem with Easter. The poor bunnies are paying for it over an old tradition. Why would anyone need to breed rabbits. Aren't they pretty good at it without assistance?

As I've said many times before, ban breeding. We have enough animals without breeding them. Let's first take care of the ones we have before forcing more into this world and then having to put them down.

Yes, it does seem that way. I think they need some community help to kindly remind them and offer help when they get in over their heads.

I don't think baby rabbits or chicks should be sold at Easter time. Thats like giving a kid a christmas present, letting them play with it for a day & then returning it. This is worse because it involves animals not being cared for

For every animal abuse report 1000s go unreported. So now what happens to the bunnies? I tell you the day after Easter people had thier precious Easter bunnies given as gifts already on Craigslist. What thoughtless fool give it to them in the first place.
Looking for points with the kids no doubt. Now if they give the bunnies away without a rehoming fee some jerk will get it as food for their snake. People are just irresponsible so government needs to once again step in and outlaw this. That goes for Easter chicks too.

I understand that situations get out of control, but people need to know when to ask for help. If I had 50 bunnies running (hopping) around my house I would hope I would realize that I need to bring in someone to help me find the animals loving homes. These people don't realize that they are actually making these animals lives worse by keeping them in horrible conditions. I am glad there are organizations out there to help in these kinds of situations.

I'm glad the rabbits were rescued, but I hope a thorough investigation is done to determine if the man neglected them on purpose or if it was just a case of hoarding and becoming overwhelmed when the breeding got out of hand. If it was intentional, then yes, punishment is necessary and he shouldn't be allowed to have anymore pets.

I do hope they find good homes although one poster reported that they will be euthanized in a week if not adopted.

Elderly people often become overwhelmed when they become unable to do the things that they could do in the past. Please keep an eye on your family and neighbors and offer help.

Sometimes we get so wrapped up in spaying and neutering cats and dogs we forget that their are other animals{family pets} that need to be fixed as well. Rabbits are a popular household pet and hopefully all these low cost spay/neuter clinics start to offer this for other pets as well.
