Easter Weekend Rescue Saves Nearly 60 Rabbits

Browse News

ATLANTIC COUNTY, N.J. -– Just in the nick of time, dozens of rabbits being bred and sold in New Jersey were rescued on the eve of Easter Sunday.

The Atlantic County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals removed 57 rabbits from an Egg Harbor Township residence on Saturday, where conditions were deplorable, officials said.

According to officials, the elderly resident was breeding and selling the rabbits in the Garden State when he apparently became overwhelmed with the care of so many animals.

The man has not yet received any summonses for keeping the rabbits in cramped cages, without adequate food and water, or bedding to keep them warm.

Many of the rabbits were in need of medical attention, reported officials.

How horrible. I'm so glad those rabbits were rescued. I hope the person does not take in another animal. In fact, he should not be allowed to.

I dont know too much about rabbits but I do know when an animal is being mistreated and this story smells of that. Shame on this man for being so retarded and for treating these creatures with such neglect.

It is a viscious circle. If people would stop buying them - then others would stop breeding them - because then there would be no money in it for them. And that is what breeders are all about - the benjamins.

Did you know that Rabbits are the 3rd most over breed animals in the US?

So glad they saved the rabbits before they were bought in haste for Easter presents.

When this man saw that he was getting too many rabbits, he should have asked someone for help. He needs to be punished in some kind of way for his neglect.

Rabbits can be spay/neuterd. Its good for safe sex, they dont spray, adn they behave better.

That's pretty bad. There should be stricter laws on breeding animals, no matter how small. It doesn't matter what an animal is they should be treated the same as humans.

I guess that there needs to be tighter restrictions on breeding animals.

Its horrible how people assuming they can take care of the rabbits buy them not knowing how hard it is to care for them and then returning them a few weeks later when the get sick of them. Its nice to hear how some rabbits get saved before they get bought into an unwanting family!

I'm glad to hear the rabbits were resuced. If an individual cannot handle the responsibility of breeding and selling animals, they shouldn't take it up. I understand at first this man wasn't overwhelmed, but if he didn't keep the breeding rabbits away from one another so they WOULDN'T reproduce while he was still selling and had left over, this would have never happened.

STIPID people trying to make a quick buck at an animals expense!

I'm so glad these bunnies were rescued! You'd think people would realize that rabbits take just as much care as other animals. You can't just decide to breed 60 bunnies to sell for money. There's so much more work to it than just that.

I think it is another case of animal abuse. No matter what the animal, it is cruelty and abuse. Thank goodness they were rescued. He should go to jail. I guess he thought he would make big bucks on these poor little bunnies. I am glad they were rescued. He should be charged with animal cruelty and abuse.

The $5 or $10 bucks he makes is not worth the smell and hassell he went thru. I didnt say medical bills from having so many because I woud bet he didnt vet when needed!

people need to go to their local pet store and ask someone about the animal they want to get!!!!!!!!!! they need to ask how much care this animal needs... like a fish wouldn't take as much care as a puppie or kitten..... yeah it's cool that you got animal for easter but that means you have to take good care of that animal all the time...... not just when you want to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Instead of going to a pet store go to you computer and look up a shelter or rescue on Pet finder!!!! and while your there do some reasearch on the animal your looking for what you find might suprise you!

Yes, certain holidays are popular for getting pets, but you still need to do some research on the animal you are getting. Alot of times people get cute, cuddly, baby animals, and once the novelty wears off they find themselves back in the shelters and without homes. I still believe that it is good that these animals are rescued, but it is called being a responsible pet owner.

I agree! I really see 'dog like' qualities more so in my bigger boy than my littler girls.. all depends on personality though!
I hope when there is more information available to the public to show just how amazing rabbits are, more people will look into adopting from shelters and helping more rabbits! I am always eager to tell stories and share information about my guys, in hopes to open peoples minds to look beyond the basic stereotype of rabbits.

When we had 32 in rescue we saw so many different personalitys. When some one asked for a bunny we asked what are you looking for then introdused them to the perfect bunny that fit their lifstyle. Placeing buns is hard enough.... dont make it worse by picking a bunny on cuteness. Adopt from a shelter or rescue that knows the bunnys personality.

Glad they got the buns out of there. People are so unaware of how fast rabbits bred. We hear it at the shelter all the time .... "the lady at the pet store where we bought them said they were both (girls) or (boys) and then the one had babies!" And the REALLY amazing thing - the people don't seperate them (besided rabbits can get preg RIGHT after giving birth!!) Hope they all get spayed/neutered and good forever homes quickly.

Any more information about these bunnies?

Just like some cats aren't too cuddly, where some just love it.. rabbits are the same! They take a lot more time to warm up to than a dog or a cat.. but when they do, it is truly amazing. My Bruno, a 12lb French Lop is comparable to a 2 year old. He will throw fits, grunt (yes, bunnies do grunt!) when he is unhappy.. but he is a very cuddly boy. He will do something called a "Dead Bunny Flop" out of sheer happiness right infront of you loving to be pet and snuggled against. He is an absolute teddy bear when HE wants to cuddle.. he will lay right next to you when you are lying on the floor (along with crawling all over you, bumping you with his noise or pulling at your pant leg). When he is having t.v. time, he will also try to (he barely fits on my lap!) climb on my lap, and will snuggle against my lap. He is a very outgoing rabbit, although I do think he sees himself more as a human than a rabbit LOL! Just thought I would share a few stories of my big goofball.. a lot of the views of rabbits come from whats seen at petstores etc.. bored and frightened. Rabbits stuck in a two small of a cage with no mental stimulation can't strive and show their real potential. They are just as playful, comical, smart, friendly as any cat or dog would.. but get SO much less recognition. Give them a foot, they'll give you a mile.

Your Bruno sounds like our male dutch Maleki, as he loves to sit on our laps , watches tv with my hubby, loves to play chase with us, just loves to give us bunny kisses and groom us, and he thinks he is human also, Lol! Once you own a bunny , you are hooked for life , with having one, as they are the greatest!

Some rabbits do cuddle and others don't. It helps to get down on their level - ie. sit and lay on the floor with them. It's the first step. I have some who like to jump on the couch with me and watch TV.

My Tiny was a flemish giant - around 13 pounds when he passed away. He'd get into my lap and let me rub his ears and cry into his fur. He'd give me kisses for five and ten minutes at a time.

Not all rabbits are cuddlers but Tiny was more of a cuddler than our 3 cats.

Some rabbits LOVE to be cuddled and some don't. Just like dogs, cats and most other animals and people, they all have their own personality. Seems like larger rabbits are more like dogs than rabbits and some of them are big love bugs!

We have a smaller rabbit that likes to be held and loved on. If our bigger rabbit has gotten the "wigglies" out he's content to lay around in our lap as well.

Rescue rabbits are great to check out for a pet. If they are friendly and snuggly you will most likely see that in them. Babies are never a sure thing.

We call the wiggles adhd bunnys :O)

Wait... some do and some dont.... I see your holding a cat... Some like to be helpd some dont. Same with bunnnys. We have had a few bunnys in Rescue that would drive you nuts pacing the cage so you would pick it up...... If you adopt a rabbit you would need to ask about their personalitys

It is because of situations like this that rabbits are the third most needy animal in need of homes. Yet often - they are the "forgotten" ones. Or people adopt a cute and cuddly little bunny without knowing that the rabbit can live for 10 years or more with good care as a house bunny. I bet most of the folks reading this (unless you have a rabbit) don't realize that a rabbit can be housebroken and litterbox trained to live like a cat or dog (as long as you protect your wires and furniture).

I'm glad the rabbits were saved - I just wish we'd educate the public more on how rabbits can make good pets. (Then again - there is a rabbit rescue here in the contest and their reviews of rabbit products are continually pulled by ZooToo....almost as if rabbits aren't supposed to have toys, litter, cages or food??). Perhaps the education should start with ZooToo officials first.

Speaking of the rabbit rescue here on zootoo, what do you call it when the co-founder of the rescue write a lengthy review of her shelter and it is deleted by zootoo personnel? My opinion would probably be deleted. Yet if you at the shelter's reviews you have people from states like CT saying'I never heard of you' and that peice of nonsense stands and earns 20 points.
It's obvious the education about rabbits as house pets needs to start at zootoo. There are som fine but small companies that make healthy safe products for rabbits. Pet food marketers are really missing the boat on a niche that is unfilled. Too bad no one wants to make a boat load of money off those of us with house rabbits. They could by valuing our opinions what is safe and healthy and what we purchase on a regular basis.

Busy Bunny makes wonderful products for house rabbits, I have bought many of them, and every single review I wrote about them has been pulled by zootoo. Actually every review I've written about any bunny product this week has been pulled, and the rabbit shelter I support has lost about 50,000 points in the last few days (if I'm remembering right). What is going on?

OH, I know, pick me, pick me!!! (*raises hand really high like a student dying to be called on*) You call it FRAUD. Yes, that's right, it's fraud when the organization running a contest applies the rules unfairly in order to have control over the contest winner. Teacher teacher, I have case law to support this, and evidence compiled that SHOWS that there is fraud.

While discrimination against rabbits is serious business, rabbits are not any sort of protected class, nor are rabbit supporters. However, contests must be run fairly, or contestants have a legal cause of action for fraud against the organization running the contest. We use whatever means we must to get fair treatment and support for rabbits.

It's not zootoo. It's a whole bunch of people who, despite joining a website that promotes unbiased reviewing for pet owners, despite joining this website because presumably they like animals and want pets taken care of, and despite the fact that the contest going on right now is supposed to be about helping shelters for the same pets, *deep breath* choose to flag as inappropriate the reviews made by people in support of the bunnies to reduce their score. It's an automated process. I really doubt that the people running the website have the time to look at every review and every post. The real smelly business here is from unscrupulous individuals who want to dirty the odds.

I am glad these animals have been helped. I would like to see more people reporting this kind of hoarder. With so many animals, people have to know about them and be aware of their condition. I am also glad they were rescued prior to being sold for Easter. There are too many homeless pet bunnies already! We just had two come in to the Ellensburg Animal Shelter today . . .
