Easter Weekend Rescue Saves Nearly 60 Rabbits

Browse News

ATLANTIC COUNTY, N.J. -– Just in the nick of time, dozens of rabbits being bred and sold in New Jersey were rescued on the eve of Easter Sunday.

The Atlantic County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals removed 57 rabbits from an Egg Harbor Township residence on Saturday, where conditions were deplorable, officials said.

According to officials, the elderly resident was breeding and selling the rabbits in the Garden State when he apparently became overwhelmed with the care of so many animals.

The man has not yet received any summonses for keeping the rabbits in cramped cages, without adequate food and water, or bedding to keep them warm.

Many of the rabbits were in need of medical attention, reported officials.

Just like many shelter ban the adoption of black cats near Holloween, they should ban not only adoption of rabbits but the sale in pet stores as well.

A few weeks ago I noticed Petsmart had put a sign above their rabbits saying they wouldn't sell them around Easter. Although I wish they didn't sell rabbits at all, I think this was a nice sentiment.

What do Bunnies have to do with Easter anyway? It is the Resurrection of our Lord and Christ!

Easter is a blend of an old pagan fertility holiday (hence the bunnies, eggs, and chicks) and the more recent Christian one. No wonder there's a mish-mosh of symbols.

The only rabbits that should be sold during the Easter season are chocolate.

There should be a moratorium nationally on rabbit purchases at Easter.

I think there ought to be a moratorium on pet stores selling rabbits at all, and happily, many national stores have stopped selling them. They are so much more than a cage filler, but pet stores rarely educate people before sending them home with a bunny that will quickly grow out of its cage, temporarily become a teenage terror, and live almost as long as the average cat! Rabbits are wonderful pets, but not if people don't know what they're getting into!

I agree, pet stores have no business selling rabbits at all. There are so many abandoned rabbits out there who need loving homes.

These poor creatures. Why do parents keep teaching their kids that animals are so disposable and not worth kind, loving care throughout their lives? Because that is what they are doing when they take these rabbits home and then don't care for them properly.

If you choose to breed animals then you need to make sure that you can care for them. There is no excuse for this. If the owner found himself unable to care for the animals then he should have called a shelter to see if they could assist him in finding them homes, or if they would be able to take some of them.

Exactly. Can't argue he was senile, he was mentally sharp enough to remember how to breed them. If he really cared about those rabbits he would have had them spayed/neutered. He didn't, but if he cared even a little about them he would have reached out for help in vetting/rehoming them. No, he didn't care about their well being at all, sounds like all he cared about was getting in trouble.

True, JOD, but he chose for it to be that way by not only neglecting to spay/neuter them, but by actively breeding them. He can't really complain about the problem when his actions were the reason for the problem.

I'm glad they got the rabbits out of there. How sad. Why do people feel the need to keep animals if they can't care for them? Doesn't make any sense.

Unfortunately, humans can be an animals worst enemy. Thankfully there are the ones
who have compassion for the well being of innocent creatures whether they be
animals or humans. We need more compassionate people in our world. Peace!

I also had a duck and my sister had a chicken when we were young that we got from our grandparents at Easter. My parents were horrified and of course they grew up and we didn't want them because we were little. It's so sad.

I remember when I was a tiny kid.. long long ago. :)
There was a fair my mother took us too where they were giving every kid a free baby chicken..
That was so cool then.. but I shudder now to think of what happened to most the chicks...
I don't even remember what happened to MINE...

I'm so glad to know that the bunnies are safe! Rabbits are WONDERFUL pets, even if they are as much work as a cat (I've got both). Thanks to the rescue in NJ for seeing to these poor creatures.

This is horrible. The rabbit rescue I volunteer at, Midwest Rabbit Rescue & Rehome, we took in seven bunnies one breeder mistreated. Cases like this come in all the time and their extremely saddening. We are a no kill rabbit shelter, so even if the abbandoned bunnies are never adopted, they are loved by volunteers, like me, at the shelter.

As a rabbit rescue "in the loop" on this case, I want to report that as of Saturday, March 29th, all of the rabbits are NOW SAFE in adoptive homes, rabbit rescues, and foster homes!!! Many worked hard on placing these rabbits, especially Jody at Kind Heart Rescue in Cream Ridge, NJ.

I hope Zootoo will post an update on this happy ending, I for one was very concerned because I had read elsewhere that if they had not been adopted or pulled by rescues, the rabbits were to be euthanized this past weekend. I am very happy and relieved that they will now truly have a chance at the happy life they all deserve.

I hope this man is punished for the pain he's inflicted upon all those rabbits. There should be a breeding ban on animals such as rabbits because there are just too many that are homeless or in shelters.

I hope these bunnies find a new, happy place to live. It's sad that there are so many people who want bunnies only at Easter and don't think of the amount of care they need throughout the year.

Bunnies and chicks should never ever be given as gifts except to farm kids who live on a farm and know how to treat them properly. How sad for these creatures.

So glad that the bunnies got saved. Though I mainly against giving animals as gifts I have to admit that 35 years ago I did give my sister and brother a bunny for Easter and it was a family pet until it died. My Dad built an A-frame house for Harvey and he was taken care of.

when will people realize that they shouldn't buy their children a rabbit for easter? most kids get bored with them after only a couple of days. buy them chocolate!

Plus people dont take care of them they way they should because they dont even know that they have personality that need stimulating like cats and dogs

I agree, I have a male dutch bunny called Maleki. He has a very unique personality, he is a house bunny and has free roam of the house. People need to see how lovable they are, and he is litter box trained also. But a children should not own one unless they are very responcable. They make great pets and are very, very lovable, TWHITE5870

People need to stop and think before buying animals as gifts. Really, bad idea.

We had 3 buns adopted at easter, BUT before they went home we spent a lot of time disscusing care adn behavior of the rabbit and then found the right personality for the home. It worked out and the bunnys are happy..... the ONLY way a bun should be bought for a easter gift!
