Easter Weekend Rescue Saves Nearly 60 Rabbits

Browse News

ATLANTIC COUNTY, N.J. -– Just in the nick of time, dozens of rabbits being bred and sold in New Jersey were rescued on the eve of Easter Sunday.

The Atlantic County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals removed 57 rabbits from an Egg Harbor Township residence on Saturday, where conditions were deplorable, officials said.

According to officials, the elderly resident was breeding and selling the rabbits in the Garden State when he apparently became overwhelmed with the care of so many animals.

The man has not yet received any summonses for keeping the rabbits in cramped cages, without adequate food and water, or bedding to keep them warm.

Many of the rabbits were in need of medical attention, reported officials.

I wonder what the follow up was... Rabbits breed so often, they can quickly get out of hand. Was he charged or just educated?

wow good thing they got them now they are safe !! I think if you get a bunny for easter you should be willing to care for it and love it and give it a good home!! and not just ignore it after or get rid of it!!

Glad they are all safe and sound now. I am sure that Bunnymills are just as prevalent as puppymills. Hopefully this type of breeding will end.

Glad they were rescued but this gets me thinking what about the others who aren't caught. These poor rabbits suffer. And all because someone wants a cute bunny for Easter that will no longer be wanted after a short while. How sad.

I don't know why people would buy rabbits as they do grow up too and need some space.

I agree. These people that do this in their minds they are not selling a pet to them its just a commodity to make a profit from.

Isn't there a licensing requirement for breeders? If there isn't, sounds like there should be. I wonder how much interest there is for people to go to a shelter to adopt rabbits. I would really only think about going to a shelter to adopt and cat or a dog. I wouldn't expect to find any exotics there.

Poor rabbits. It's not their fault that people don't know how to care for animals. Glad they were rescued.

Some people will do (almost) anything for easy money. And that sure is sad when animals are caught in this.

So many people get overwhelmed while trying to breed or even help animals. It is really a shame...all it ever does is hurts the animals in the long run.

I just wish that people would pay attention to the kind of commitment, time and financial, taking in any pet requires. It's really discouraging to continue to watch people treat animals as commodities.

Just another person trying to make a buck off animals but not caring at all about the animals. Glad he got caught and the rabbits will not be subjected to his cruelty of neglect anymore

Poor bunnies! They are so adorable. They deserve better. I wish people didn't use animals in this way, but instead have them for their personality and companionship.

I'm glad these rabbits were rescued. When will people realize that living things are not decorations for a holiday; they are precious and come with responsibilities.
