Don’t Let Pets Lick Their Chops Over These Leftovers

Browse News

LOS ANGELES -- Sizzling marinated steaks, chili dogs topped with onions, a big piece of chocolate cake. As Americans prepare for summer holidays and celebrations, they may want to think twice about giving their dogs these scraps from the grill and the dinner table. As it turns out, these meals can send them to the emergency room and in some cases, even kill them.

“My colleague’s neighbor gave his dog hot dogs off the grill and the dog was in the hospital for a day,” Susan Blake Davis, a Dana Point, California veterinary nutritionist said.

Contrary to popular belief, all foods that people eat are not safe for pets to consume, Davis said. Grapes, raisins and chocolate are especially toxic to dogs. A single serving of raisins could kill them. Pet owners should make sure that food is out of reach for pets, especially when they are away from home.

“One pet owner had just come back from a trip and had a couple boxes of chocolate coins. They left the box open and went to work. When they came back, they realized that the wrappers were laying around,” Davis said.

The owners rushed their dog to the emergency room and used charcoal and induced vomiting to get it out of his system. “The pet lived but it was a very dangerous situation.”

Pet owners should also refrain from giving pets food high in fat such as cheeseburgers and French fries, which can lead to pancreatitis when consumed regularly and in large quantities, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

“The most common thing people tend to do during the holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas is give the dog and cat scraps off the table, like gravy,” Davis said. “Those scraps have a lot of fat in it. The same way it’s not good for us, it’s not good for them either.”

Since 60 percent of pets are obese in America, Davis said, she recommends that clients give their pets healthy and safe people food, like brown rice, lean chicken breasts, oatmeal and baby carrots. That will prevent health issues like joint problems, cancer and kidney failure associated with pet obesity.

Healthy people food snacks for pets also include sweet potatoes.

“There’s a treat I love called wild side salmon treats,” Davis said. “They’re literally just freeze-dried wild salmon. If you want to give a pet a treat, they come in tiny bite size treats.”

Excessive treat giving can put on a lot of weight, so Davis recommends these snacks to her clients.

“People tend to want to treat their pets the way they want to be treated and they shouldn’t,” Davis said. “You need to use common sense when treating your pets.”

Consult a pet nutritionist if you’re confused about what to give your pets. Davis recommends books “Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats,” and Dr. Henry Pasternak’s “Healing Pets as Nature’s Miracle Cure,” to pet owners interested in pet nutrition.

Any pet that eats a known toxin should be rushed to the animal emergency room, Davis said. If you’re not sure what foods are toxic for pets, log on to ASPAC’s Web site at aspca.org.

What 60 percent of the U.S. pets are obese, that is not right. We need to take better care of our pets.

The more the word is spread about raisins and other possibly toxic household items to our pets, the better!! So many people just aren't aware and assume if humans can have it, so can dogs.

When the Standard American Diet (SAD) improves, obesity and morbidity rates will decline in both people and pets.

Raisins are deadly to dogs? Wow, I never knew this. I also would not have tried feeding them oatmeal. Hmmm...

It is important that we know what we are giving our animals. Especially more and more we are finding that our food isn't all that safe for us either.

Great advice, it's always a challenge but in the long run you are not doing your pet any favors giving them food from the table.

I also was surprised about the hot dog. I have always given my dogs small amounts of hot dog and have never encountered a problem. I do not think any human food in large amounts is good and of course you need to be aware of the foods that are toxic.

I may not be able to control my own eating the way I would like, but my dogs are fed healthy diets with no unsafe foods. A well balanced dog food and fresh water everyday are all your pet needs. I do feed twice a day because it is better for the dogs.

Hard to believe raisins can be so dangerous - that's an easy thing to overlook. As for chocolate, a big dog can eat quite a bit before really getting sick, if at all, but it's something you don't want to see happen. A friends lab ate a pound of Godiva and was sick but made it OK.

I would say this is common sense but, obviously, it's not. Just as I wouldn't be happy eating dog or cat food, they won't be happy eating Andy's food. Especially all the tofu.

i remember as a child always giving my dog a bit of chocolate and they never got sick. i have not done it for years though. i was wondering if they changed the ingredients since i was a child. everything we ate they got some of. even though nothing bad happened then i would not take a chance now. also our vet had told us that chicken was poison to a dog even chicken dog food.

People food is for people and animal food is for animals. It's just that simple. Too often people anthropomorphize their animals and, unfortunately, sometimes it ends up bad.

Wow I know chocolate is bad for pets , but never thought of raisins or grapes actually I wouldn't think dogs/cats would eat them . The only people food I will occassionaly give them is a piece of chicken breast baked not fried , but I keep lots of different doggie treats just for them .

I try my best not to give my animals any people food that might hurt them, but alas, my dad, my sister they are always putting out scraps and my corgi is always first in line. He will eat anything anytime. We have had him to the vet more than once, over his gorging on anything rotten or not. I feed dog food, but they will inevitably get into something else, whether I give it to them or not.

It is very unhealthy for dogs to have people food. They die yearly of heart attacks and stuff. Thats why i dont feed my animals people food because it isnt healthy. My grandparents feeds their 2 dogs and cat people food and it looks like they are gonna exploed. I try to tell them but they dont listen. We learned it in health that it is not healthy for pets to have people food.

I can tell that our new adopted dog, Aegir, has had lots of people food before we got him. Pulled up to get a drink at a drive thru and the dog went nuts when the person said "can I take your order". He was barking and bouncing so much. So he knew what those words meant.

He also knows what a pizza box is and was barking and everything the other day when I came home with one.

He is 20 pounds overweight when we adopted him and I would say it is because of the people food.

Our dogs do not get very much people food. Once in a while they might get a chip or the crust of a pizza slice. But not too often. They do get carrots, blackberries, bananas, things like that. And of course, cheese with sicky meds. But people food is not one of the things they get lots of. There is no reason to feed them.

Also if you are training your dog, make sure to adjust the amount of kibble in the bowl to the amount of treats you are giving. Makes a big differents. And also look for low or no fat treats. There are several out there.

It's just lazy to feed a dog from the table, plus it teaches begging. But, I did have a cat once that LOVED potato chips and french fries, wierd huh?!? Thanks for mentioning the weight issue also because I don't think people realized it can be as big a problem for pets as it is for people.
