'Dogumentary' Captures Weiner Dog Racing

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- Each year dog owners take their pups to a race park, where the four-legged speed demons line-up to zip down the track, in hopes of taking first place. But you won’t find grey hounds or whippets on this racecourse -- just wiener dogs -- or Daschunds, as they’re officially known.

The sport got its start in the 1970s in Australia. But the hobby didn’t arrive in the United States until 1993, when during the Super Bowl a Miller Lite spot about alternative sports aired. And American weenie racing was born.

Today, wiener racing has a strong cult following, filling out venues across the nation.

A national tour culminates in December; the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals are held in San Diego. The event and much of the national tour are sponsored by Wienerschnitzel, a fast-food hot dog restaurant.

Each year tens of thousands of owners enter their canines in the races -- hoping to take home a ribbon -- or at least a good story.

“This is hysterical, this is fun,” said fan Sharon Miggins. “This is a hobby for people who truly love their dogs."

But not everyone is keen about sending the short-statured canines careening down a track -- most race lanes are 25 to 50 yards long – and Daschunds’ long backs aren’t designed for running.

Dr. Jill Richardson, DMV, said when it comes to wiener dog races, there’s little risk of injury -- but the breed is somewhat prone to “degeneration of inter-vertebral disks,” which if untreated can lead to spinal cord compression.

“But, just like in people, anyone who would like to put their pets through intensive play or sport should probably first have their pets vet-checked,” she said. “To be even more cautious, since this type of problem is common in Dachshunds, they could have the pet's back X-rayed to make sure they do not have early signs of inter-vertebral disk disease.”

But that type of injury is reserved for overweight dogs that like to hop on and off the couch -- not for active wieners.

What’s more likely, she said, is that one dog will go sprinting down to win the race while the others jog, skip, and meander either toward their handler on the far end of the track, sniff one another, or head back to the starting gate.

The phenomenon attracted the attention of filmmaker Shane MacDougall. He spent a year chasing tail to make, “Wiener Takes All,” and all telling piece about the ins and outs of the sport.

The race isn’t the only focus of MacDougall’s film, though. It covers the issue of doping, the top dogs’ race to the nationals and much more. The film is being showcased in several festivals, and MacDougall said so far, the response has been great.

"I loved this film,” said Nadja Raver, who was at a New York screening of the film on April 8. “I watched it from the beginning to the end. And everybody laughed from the beginning (when) the credits came on."

MacDougall wonders about where weenie racing is headed in general. And although scandals have yet to surface around the sport, at least the film provided what some called an entertaining view into wiener dog racing.

"Everybody in that movie showed how much you can love your Daschunds and it was really a funny movie,” said Nadja Raver.

Whenever there is a chance for a dog to get hurt, I'm not for the race just for making people laugh.

We have bassets who can have back problems as well and they love to run, sometimes. Let me emphasize sometimes. If this is done in fun and these dogs are vet checked and healthy and aren't forced then let them have some fun, We love watching Maggie get Ol Daisy going from time to time and I think it keeps Daisy feeling younger, but then she's got to nap.

My beloved pet, Shay, was part dachshund and just loved running around and chasing the rabbits when he was younger, when we lived in the country, but dachshund's do end up having back problems like other members have posted already. My Shay slipped a disc in his back and lost the use of his hind legs for 2 months, but eventually got the use of his legs back, but then got very ill until we eventually had to put him to sleep. Dachshunds are quick little runners and as long as your vet says it's ok to let them run, Then Let Them!! Dachshund's love to run to their heart's content and as long as they are healthy enough, then enjoy watching your lil doxie, enjoying his/her life, as life is far too short for some of our beloved pets!!

Hot dog, what a race! Congratulations to the wiener!

Every year St. Louis as part of Mardi Gras has a day dedicated to dogs wich includes The Mystic Krewe of Barkus parade followed by weiner dog races. When our doxie Freida was younger we let her race. these are not "serious" races, and most of the time the dogs re-interpret the rules as they go along. One year, Freida left the race track and stole a hot dog from someone watching the race--so in her mind she "won" the race. And there is nothing funnier than watching the puppies race, they end up forming a pile of playing puppies in the middle of the track, all ignoring their humans who are at the finish line trying to call them.

I agree. people do need to understand that thsi is just plain fun. It is not a big racing conpetition. And ,come on, what could be cuter or funier that seeing a group of doxies running!

Sounds like fun but I am always hesitant about using dogs for sport. A lot of dogs are "trained" sports which may not be best for their health. And if there is real competition among the owners - you have to worry about drugs and malicious behavior against opthers.

But then again - this is weenie dog racing - so maybe it is just regular people who just want to do something fun with their pooches once in a while.

Cute idea. As long as it doesn't turn into the nightmare situation other animal racing venues have had to deal with - poor treatment of the animals all for the sake of the win, this is great. Have your pup checked out for health first though.

These little dog were bred down in size.
They should not be used in any sports or hard exercise as they are very fragile, mostly in their little spines.

The story saids that is mostly over weight dogs not active ones.... Dogs that are owned by people that don't get them out to run. This is a harmless thing, I love this, and think it is a good thing for the dogs... Read “This is hysterical, this is fun,” said fan Sharon Miggins. “This is a hobby for people who truly love their dogs." Owners of this breed should be very careful with their backs. No jumping or climbing on high surfaces. Running should be limited.

As long as the dogs are not hurt this would be fun...but sometimes humans don't see the pain the dogs may be in and these races can get out of hand. I just don't think that daushaunds are made to run in races.

Sounds funny. We have Dachshunds on parade here in Kittitas County....very funny to see so many little dogs in one place. I really look forward to the races...they can be incredibly fast. They make little watering holes out of rain gutters for the thirsty pouches that are just at their level.

This is a great way to educate people. I wonder how many owners do not know about the back problems some of the dogs may develope? By taking something that is fun for the dogs and their people, the word can be spread, and hopefully more people will take their pets to be checked and monitored.

I have doxies and I think it is a great idea! If they don't run they get fat and this is worse for their back than racing. Of course anyone who would harm a dog would do it on or off the track so you can't condemn the sport, just the people who would do it.

Great comments, David - I agree - I see no harm in this - they looked in this clip and on the videos at wienertakesall.com like pets & people enjoying themselves together. There is no jumping involved and that is what will cause injuries to their backs - some of the little devils looked like they were cheating though - trying to slip around the back of the crowd and head to the winners circle :)

Ahhh....... These dogs are just fine as long as a vet has cheched them. They are not being forced to run. If they didn't want to run or they started hurting they would stop. I don't see anything wrong with this. It's no different then the dogs chasing a a cat or a bird all over the yard or field.

Dachshunds were born to hunt badgers so a little running won't hurt them. I say let them run and have fun. What hurts them more is their owners killing them with food. I'd love to see them out there running having a grand time. On your mark, get ready, set ... GO!!!!!!! :o) Oh yeah, I should mention that I'm owned by two dachshunds and very involved with dachshund rescue.

As long as we don't start getting race tracks opening up everywhere for this like there are for greyhound racing, I don't see a problem with it. Just make sure it stays as a fun day out.

From what I saw,it reminded me more like a fun day out for both pets and owners, and hopefully that's how it will stay.
I thought it cute that while some were racing straight to the finish line, there were other's just having fun and doing their own thing.
While I definitely don't approve of the cruelty done in Greyhound racing,I didn't feel as if was in that same blood thirsty place.
It's something that can always change though. If people think that there's big money to be made in it , wiener racing could go to the "seedier side" eventually. You can never say never.
We tend to be so judgmental, and sometimes I think we have to give someone the benefit of doubt. Maybe they really are just pet lovers having fun with other pet lovers who share their love for Daschunds.

Cute little Daschunds racing, jogging, skipping or meandering down a track is not cute or funny. Tens of thousands of people have their pets participate--for laughs and ribbons only--I am not that naive. Horse racing, Greyhound racing, Daschund racing...it's all the same--the animal is being used for entertainment purposes and such activities can have no benefit at all to the animal.

Although my S-L-O-W dialup connection precludes my watching the video, I'm getting a great mental picture of this event, and must confess to really chuckling! Instead of the wiener, er, I mean 'winner,' being 'top banana,' he or she might be 'top bun!!!!' (sorry, Top Gun fans; couldn't help myself!!!)
