'Dogumentary' Captures Weiner Dog Racing

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- Each year dog owners take their pups to a race park, where the four-legged speed demons line-up to zip down the track, in hopes of taking first place. But you won’t find grey hounds or whippets on this racecourse -- just wiener dogs -- or Daschunds, as they’re officially known.

The sport got its start in the 1970s in Australia. But the hobby didn’t arrive in the United States until 1993, when during the Super Bowl a Miller Lite spot about alternative sports aired. And American weenie racing was born.

Today, wiener racing has a strong cult following, filling out venues across the nation.

A national tour culminates in December; the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals are held in San Diego. The event and much of the national tour are sponsored by Wienerschnitzel, a fast-food hot dog restaurant.

Each year tens of thousands of owners enter their canines in the races -- hoping to take home a ribbon -- or at least a good story.

“This is hysterical, this is fun,” said fan Sharon Miggins. “This is a hobby for people who truly love their dogs."

But not everyone is keen about sending the short-statured canines careening down a track -- most race lanes are 25 to 50 yards long – and Daschunds’ long backs aren’t designed for running.

Dr. Jill Richardson, DMV, said when it comes to wiener dog races, there’s little risk of injury -- but the breed is somewhat prone to “degeneration of inter-vertebral disks,” which if untreated can lead to spinal cord compression.

“But, just like in people, anyone who would like to put their pets through intensive play or sport should probably first have their pets vet-checked,” she said. “To be even more cautious, since this type of problem is common in Dachshunds, they could have the pet's back X-rayed to make sure they do not have early signs of inter-vertebral disk disease.”

But that type of injury is reserved for overweight dogs that like to hop on and off the couch -- not for active wieners.

What’s more likely, she said, is that one dog will go sprinting down to win the race while the others jog, skip, and meander either toward their handler on the far end of the track, sniff one another, or head back to the starting gate.

The phenomenon attracted the attention of filmmaker Shane MacDougall. He spent a year chasing tail to make, “Wiener Takes All,” and all telling piece about the ins and outs of the sport.

The race isn’t the only focus of MacDougall’s film, though. It covers the issue of doping, the top dogs’ race to the nationals and much more. The film is being showcased in several festivals, and MacDougall said so far, the response has been great.

"I loved this film,” said Nadja Raver, who was at a New York screening of the film on April 8. “I watched it from the beginning to the end. And everybody laughed from the beginning (when) the credits came on."

MacDougall wonders about where weenie racing is headed in general. And although scandals have yet to surface around the sport, at least the film provided what some called an entertaining view into wiener dog racing.

"Everybody in that movie showed how much you can love your Daschunds and it was really a funny movie,” said Nadja Raver.

Sounds fun, but my little one is more of a curl up on your lap or go for a walk - racing not her thing.

I prefer roller derby. It doesn't harm animals and you still get to see animals move fast.

I have a Daschund and he loves to run on my property especially if he sees a mouse. I think the racing is just for fun and if the owners use good judgement everyone including the dogs can have fun with it.

I worry that events like this degenerate to big-bucks competitions. Look how a noble journey to deliver serum to Nome turned into the 9-day, 1,050-mile, dog-stressing Iditarod endurance race.

I agree with Ralph. It sounds like this is just for fun. If the owners are aware of the pets limitations and health then it should be alright. what a great way to get pet owners together and socialization for the dogs. Lets hope that it stays fun and doesn't become a phenomenon that they start earning money and then become a dangerous sport.

This is for fun,not profit. The minute a race animal is used to make money, the animal is at risk. Weiner dog racing sounds like just a bunch of dog owners out to have fun, they all win. It would be good to have your Daschund checked before they do this though.

When I watched a wiener dog race last summer, I was amazed that nobody could get their dogs to come to them! I thought more people would have taught their dogs the basic "Come" command. It was a VERY long race.

We had a wiener dog when we were kids and she was too fat and old to do much. I've always wanted another one. It would be HILARIOUS to see WEENIE RACING. Now why can't people do THAT instead of dog fights?? There are winners and losers and people can bet and no one would get hurt. but then again with the sick minds the dogs would probably STILL get drugged and abused.

I bet that those races are adorable. I've never heard of this before. I also recently discovered that weiner dogs and jack russels compete in something called "Earth Dog"? It's where underground networks of tunnels are built and the dogs race through them. Learn something new everyday! I am OK with all of this so long as it doesn't turn into a greyhound racing situation and that the lives of the dogs competing are valued highly as companions and friends instead of athletes.

As long as the dog willingly competes and the vets have deemed them fit race it will be ok. I just hope these weenie dogs are not cast away like greyhounds after they are no longer able to race.

I guess if the dog has been checked by a vet prior to the race and is deemed to be in OK. condition than it probably is a fun event. I don't approve of forcing any animal to do what they don't want to do.

I used to have one of these dogs when I was little and there was nothing cuter than watching him run...he had such a funny little gait. In the winter, it was even funnier because he would try to hop above the snow.

I see nothing wrong with this. I think it's a good way to get people and their dogs involved in activty togther. I think the run may be a bit to long for the short legged guys.

I keep reading, “it looks like fun” and such and I am all for fun with your dog. I enjoy watching fly ball and agility competitions.
***BUT when you put an animal in a ‘racing arena’ and you are earning on an animals performance, I whole-heartedly disagree.****
When any animal - horse or dog starts running for money they will lose.
When you elicit spectators into an arena ‘for the Weiner fun race’ and promote the dog/horse races that exploit the innocent, that’s where the line must be drawn.

although they comment about dogs getting hurt you needed to read further where it says something to the effect of a few will run and the rest will jog, meander, or sniff about. I don't think any one is trying to hurt the dogs. They just commented that they are not made to run.
