Dog Tricks Stroke Patients into Exercise

Browse News

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- William Armbrecht is recovering from stroke and his eye-hand coordination needs work.

"Keep your head straight -- You've done so much better this afternoon than in the morning,” a physical therapist says. But Armbrecht's cooperation fades and he turns into a cantankerous patient.

So the staff at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital calls in its secret weapon -- a Golden Retriever-mix.

Named Rikki, short for Rikki Lake Ponchartrain, she's a Hurricane Katrina survivor who has now learned a new trick -- fooling patients into doing physical therapy.

"You pet a dog, it releases endorphins and you feel better," said Rikki's owner Chuck Mitchell, "And frankly, from a therapist standpoint, you get a more complaint patient. Sometimes they'll do something for a dog that they flat won't do for a person."

Rikki and Mitchell make their rounds at the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital as part of a program called ComForT, or Companions for Therapy. Started 30 years ago, the program's original goal was to help the elderly in retirement homes, yet the mission soon expanded to schools, hospitals, health facilities, assisted living homes and even the court room to help testimonies.

The success of the program in hospital has been remarkable, according to the doctors and staff at TMH.

"It's motivation for the patients," said Karen Diggs, occupational therapist at Tallahassee Memorial, "When they see the dog, they want to do it for the dog and not for us. We usually reach our goals faster with the dog than on our own with a cone. So it's beneficial."

Since they've begun using ComForT, the hospital's noticed that unwilling patients are willing to do their exercises, even if they are tricked into doing it. With Rikki around, the recovery process moves impetuously because every time a patient pets the dog, he's "fooled" into doing his exercises without even knowing it.

"Human healing can be aided by these animals," said Mitchell. "We see it every time we do a visit. We see connections and small miracles that happen. It's tremendous and satisfying. It's great stuff."

Stroke victim Leonard Riley has also benefited from Rikki. He's not very excited about doing his therapy. Doctors at TMH need Riley to work on his balance and learn to walk again. But he only wants to walk the halls when he's walking Rikki.

And the healing begins with Rikki. A canine who's mission in life is to help humans recover any way she can.

"Bottom line is we have to inspire trust and confidence when we walk into a patients room," said Mitchell, "Rikki trusts me, I trust her. We know how to work together. But I'm just the guy on the leash and the guy that drives her around. I don't know how any of this works. It's all the dog."

But not just any dog. A dog that was on the verge of losing her own life and is now doing her part to save the lives of others.

What a great way to get people moving again! A dogs love is so unconditional there are no expectations of performance. They can be more comfortable with the dogs and that benifits everyone!! Just one of the many ways pets enhance our lives :)

This is a great story and I know all to weel, how true these programs can work. I manage a senior housing development and many residents have suffered falls, strokes, etc. and have needed rehabilitation after their hospital stays. They always rave about being able to see a cute dog on occasion.

Pets and therapy dogs are a great way for every human to feel better!

This is so sweet....I love when there's actually good news about pets. It such nice switch from the news story usually involving abused animals. I've been hearing a lot about animals that have survived Huricane Katrina lately. The past two stories I've heard involve those animals providing help for others in that capacity. I love this!

When I bring my dog to the rehab center - he just sits and gives the patients kisses..... and they talk to him and pet him. sometimes someone wants to walk with him - so I attach his leash to their wheel chair and they walk him down the hallway. But, we aren't in the PT room.

The therapy dogs I've seen mostly just interact with the patients, sitting with them & letting them pet them. Sometimes we would bring patients out into the therapy room & they would toss balls & the dog would fetch, just things like that. One had their dog do all sorts of tricks & just entertain everyone.

Hi, this is Rikki's partner, Chuck. If a stroke patient won't try to get out of a wheelchair to re-learn to walk, I just put on a second leash and ask if they'd like to walk her down the hall. Never fails. If they've lost partial use of their left arm, I have her put her head on that arm and after a few seconds of baleful looks, they begin to try to pet her with that arm. Then I give them treats to give to her, and before you (or they) know it, they're having her perform tricks and using their arm and hand to get the treats out of the bag and feed her. Most stroke victims get depressed afterwards, and petting a dog relaxes them and makes them feel better and more receptive to doing their therapy. We also have them throw balls for retrieving, etc. Basically, we are a tool for the therapist to use to help get the patients to try things they won't or don't think they can. It's even more amazing for traumatized patients and children. Thanks for the questions and comments! Chuck

Some therapy dogs are used for motivation & just to lift the spirits of sad & depressed patients who feel like they've lost everything. People in nursing homes often don't even have family who visit & many have dementia. Therapy animals often help dementia patients become more focused. We had them visit the psych hospital regularly. By their mere presence & interactions with patients, the patients were more compliant & focused on therapy. And what you see as just petting, I, as a therapist, sees as extension & flexion of an elbow, shoulder, & hand. In tossing a ball I see the ability to work on grip strength & more flexion & extension of the shoulder & elbow. Children & adults with brain injuries often have spastic arms & hands that won't open up & its painful to work on that but petting a dog is relaxing & helps those limbs relax. Sequencing is a big problem for some, they can't put things in the right order. But in order to give the dog a treat, they have to think about it & do things in the right order. It depends on the needs of the patient & the imagination of the therapist. Sometimes just petting is what the patient needs though because they're so depressed they just need to be reminded of happy memories.
