PENNSYLVANIA – A Philadelphia man whose dog was kidnapped was made to listen to the dog's screams over the phone. The dog was later killed, and now the man wants the Verizon phone company to help track down the culprits.
Bill Whiting and his 12-year-old Beagle-mix spent a lot of time together – bringing their affection to local hospitals for patient therapy. In kind, floppy-eared Edna was with Whiting on Halloween when he headed to a friend's house.
Edna disappeared that night, and that's the last anyone has seen of her – except for the two kids responsible for her alleged death.
10 days after the disappearance, Whiting got a call around midnight from two boys claiming to have the dog. They said they were 16 and 9 years-old. They had seen Whiting's posters offering a $500 reward, and demanded he give them $600 or they'd kill his dog.
To prove their intent, the captors tortured the dog while on the phone with Whiting. He says he could hear Edna's screams – seven minutes of agony he was forced to listen to.
So he agreed to pay the ransom, arrangements were made for an early morning exchange. But no such exchange would ever happen, because a few hours after hanging up the captors called back with gruesome news – they had killed Edna.
“It was so evil, it was outside my frame of reference,” Whiting said.
Philadelphia police are investigating, and warrants for the phone numbers have been issued to Verizon wireless. Whiting says he tried to get the numbers the morning after his dog was killed, but red tape slowed the process.
It's hard to imagine what impetus could provoke such treatment. Any information leading to Edna or her captors can be given to Philadelphia police at 215-686-3093 or 3094.

ACTION ALERT: Calling all animal welfare advocates to help seek justice for Edna!
Join us March 5th, in Philadelphia, PA for a peaceful presence at a press conference concerning the case.
Victor Rodriguez, the juvenile of Nicetown charged with 'terroristic threats', 'attempted robbery by extortion' and a litany of other offences, following the 'Edna' animal cruelty case, failed to show up at his pre-trial hearing on January 31st (Petition #830-07-12 under the jurisdiction of Assistant District Attorney, Angel Flores) at the Youth Study Center. The court issued a bench warrant for his immediate arrest. Since then, Rodriguez has eluded Police.
In response to this case, a petition was created to Verizon and to Mayor Michael Nutter. The petition, which gathered over 5000 signatures, requested Verizon streamline its coordination with the Philadelphia Police and other law enforcement so delays in providing information would never happen again in cases of animal cruelty. Verizon responded with a cover letter enclosed with 2 responses that were previously posted in the Philadelphia Daily News. This cover letter and responses put the blame for the delay on the Philadelphia Police and did not address streamlining its policies with law enforcement. The petition also requested Mayor Michael Nutter address this case by putting the pressure on the Philadelphia Police to find the individual(s) responsible and to find Edna.
