Dog Survives 15 Days Trapped in Gully

Browse News

NEW YORK -- Saturday afternoon brought a happy reunion for 10-year old German shepherd Ebony and her owner Jane Bowie in the Cairn region of Australia.

After being trapped for 15 days at the base of a gully, Cairns South firefighters worked to save the dog by lowering themselves nearly 33 feet down into the 50-degree embankment with a rope.

Ebony had gone missing on May 9 after a side gate was accidentally left open. Bowie immediately searched her neighborhood in Alpinia Tce and spent the next two weeks posting notices and placing ads on the radio and in The Cairns Post.

Then she started to hear Ebony howl and cry at night, but Bowie was unable to determine the dog’s exact whereabouts.

"Ebony’s not a very vocal animal so I didn’t know if it was her," Bowie said in an interview with The Carins Post.

On Saturday, Bowie decided it was time to call for help after she heard more barking.

A crew of three arrived and the rescue began.

"They called out ‘She’s here, she’s here, she’s all right, she’s wagging her tail’," an emotional Bowie recalled after the firefighters reached Ebony.

Despite losing about 13 pounds, Ebony was thrilled to see her rescuers since she could not overcome the six-and-a-half foot tall guinea grass, in addition to the steep grade.

"As soon as Lenard (the first fireman to reach the gully) got down there she (Ebony) was all over him, she was so happy to see him," South Cairn Fire Station officer-in-charge Brad Fleming said.

Fleming says he and his crew were all dog-lovers and were just as happy as her owner to see Ebony returned safe and sound.

"To have a feel-good rescue like this, we’re all pretty chuffed about it compared to some of the things we go to," Fleming said.

Fortunately, Ebony wasn't injured or she might not have survived. Good thing she was vocal when she needed to be! Happy to hear that all's well.

I can't imagine hearing the barking and cries of Ebony and not knowing where she was or how to get to her. I would have gone nuts if one of my girls went missing. I'm glad there was a happy ending to this one.

You must have just been at your wit's end with the dobie lost like that. It's a miracle that you were able to find him and I'm glad you did. I hope he was able to live out a full and healthy life in spite of the problems he had after his ordeal.

You are absolutely right. Animal rescuers DO deserve to get more recognition for what they do, which often is very dangerous & daunting work. What would we do without them?

Wow that is amazing, 15 days. I would only hope if my dogs got lost or I should say stuck like that they would make it 3 days in our heat of summer or freezing winters. My dogs are always inside, and I don't think they could stand the weather here for longer then a day or two.

Yes, some dogs do not do well with extreme temperatures (high, or low). My poodle would never have made it that long. Heck, in the winter the poor guy shivers so badly I have a little wardrobe for him so he can wear fleece, or other little coats to keep warm. He also has his little rain coats, too.

A big thank you goes out to the 3 firemen from The South Cairn Fire Station! I am so happy to know that Ebony is home & safe w/ her owner who was missing her so. I am sure in no time Ebony will gain her 13 lbs back no problem. It is so great to know there are firemen & caring rescue people out there that are willing to help when pets come up missing & need assistance out of trouble. Heartwarming story.

What a great ending- it could have been tragic, the dog could have starved to death. I am so glad they were able to save her.
