Dogs Practice 'Real' Family Life in 'Real Life' Room

Browse News

TAMPA, Fla. -- After a career on the race track, Jim the greyhound is on the fast track to learning something new: how to live in a home. It might sound odd, but keep in mind: this three-and-a-half year old may know how to run circles around other dogs, but doesn’t know how to navigate around furniture.

He may know what the sound of a starter pistol means, but not the hum and churn of a dishwasher.

He’s used to hearing the cheers of a crowd, but not music blaring from a radio.

So that’s why he and all dogs at the Humane Society of Pinellas spend time in the Real Life room. A self enclosed, contained room that does what its name implies: gives dogs a sense of what “real life” with a family is like.

It contains furniture, exercise equipment, a table and chairs, appliances, and sometimes volunteers who move about completing tasks like filling meal containers for shelter animals.

“It’s a space dedicated for animals who haven’t had experience in a home environment before,” explained shelter manager Abagail Appleton. “It’s also an area where dogs that are out in the kennels can take a break from the monotony of the kennels.”

While the Florida organization doesn’t keep track of how many times a dog enjoys the Real Life room or how many dogs have experienced the room, Appleton said she believes it makes a difference in easing a dog’s transition into a home.

During our visit, 6-year-old Shiba Inu Monkey frantically sniffed every corner, and repeatedly circled the room, dove under the table and chairs, and adjusted his step getting used to the tile floor. Whether it was the excitement of being out of his kennel or being in a new environment we aren’t sure -- but he left evidence of his unfamiliarity by a wicker chair, a puddle.

“It’s easy to see the first time an animal does come into the real life room they’re a little nervous. They have to sniff around and check out everything because there’s been 900 other dogs in that room. But, you know, once they’re in there a few times, they start to relax, feel more confident, and we really feel it eases their transition into a home,” Appleton said.

In addition to getting the dogs acclimated to the items a home may contain, the Humane Society of Pinellas also work on house training the dogs. Commands such as “here,” “sit” and “down” are practiced and incorporated into the time they spend in the real life room.

Appleton hopes Jim will get to show a family how well he can make the transition to a home soon. He’s been at the Humane Society of Pinellas since December 2007 and is still looking for a home. Monkey is already showing off his home skills -- a family adopted him at the beginning of June.

Every shelter and rescue league should have this type of room and program, it's wonderful. It will help insure that when an animal is adopted they don't end up back, great work.

I never thought about these dogs never being in a house. I thought the owners took them home. I am learning. I think this is a good idea & the puppy mill dogs could use something like this also.

I don't like the idea of the racetracks in the first place. I'm glad there are efforts out there to help these dogs.

This is the way I would like to see all shelters acclimate pets who have been disadvantaged. It is part of our strategic plan as we build. Good work.

A very good idea to lessen the stress of being in a regular home life instead of on the race track.

Wish our shelter had a room like this! We do have one for cats but not for dogs. Funds are too limited to have much more than we have! But it's such a great idea!

This room is a great idea! Little by little these poor dogs can learn how to adapt to life in a home.

Hopefully some day dog racing will be banished and there won't be a need to retrain animals

This is a good idea. It's kind of sad that some dogs have never seen the inside of a house.

There are a lot of dogs that are totally unfamiliar with being in a home setting. It's sad how frightened some are when faced with this type of surrounding. It's very important that they become comfortable in a home setting so that they can be adopted into a "forever" home. If at all possible, Real Life Rooms should be a part of every rescue's "equipment."

Sounds like a great idea (the real life room) and I totally agree that dog racing should be illegal!

I am glad some of these dogs are being rescued but most don't fare this well. Animals are a commodity to the race track group and when the dogs can't win anymore, they lose.

So glad to hear these programs are becoming more common--it is an awful lot to expect a dog to go from living in a crate in a shelter to instantly adapting to a home.

This or fostering can make a huge difference to a shelter dog. Most have not had a good home experience, some have never been in a house at all. Being exposed to normal house sounds eliminates a lot of the fears.

This sounds like a great program! When we got our greyhound off of the track, she did not know how to go up and down stairs.

This is a great idea! It could also serve as a place where people can spend a little time with prospective pets in a more realistic environment.

I see all sorts of critters at our shelter that aren't familiar with living in homes but I never thought too much about it. Everyone is always concerned about the animals being housebroken but what of all the other noises and whatnot in a houses? More to think about...

Real life rooms at shelters are so valuable--both in acclimating those who've never been in a traditional home and in assessing any special issues other dogs may have in the home. The more information you gather the more you can help make good placements.

Real life rooms are great for the "public" as they like to see animals house in such rooms. My only concern with them is the dog may pick up habits that I as an adopter do not want....such as getting on all of the furniture.
Real life rooms are great as long as there is real life peolpe monitoring the animal.

They do that with Greyhounds at the Jacksonville Kennel. All the greys are put into foster homes so they get use to walking on tile floors, windows, ceiling fans, etc. Everyday things that we take for granted. I think more shelters should adopt this program, it would increase their adoptions.

I had the opportunity to overnight a dog that had never been indoors before. He was afraid of everything, ceiling fans,TV,radios, sliding doors, you name it. I was lucky my dog was there to calm him down, and make him feel secure. This dog was adopted by a nice person, and the dog turned out to be one of the kindest, gentlest, dogs I have ever known.

I just watched the video again and have to say what a wonderful program this is for shelter dogs, to have the ability of being in a home to wander around and see what it is like, it is to bad we do not see more of this type on intervention in our shelters, I am sure this does cost money - but the benefits would be amazing.. Great Job..
