Dog Shot In Front Of Kids

Browse News

TETON, ID – A Teton County family is thrilled to find that their dog is alive and recovering after being shot three times by a police officer.

Owner Leo Barboza says that the officer showed up at his front door asking to see his dog, Bobby.

The officer told Barboza that he received a complaint - Bobby had allegedly bitten someone and he was there to put the dog down.

While Barboza went to get Bobby, the officer got a rifle from his car. Barboza said the officer took the dog a few feet from the house where he fired three shots into the dog's neck.

“A bunch of kids, they just got off the bus and they were all on the street. All the kids were watching the officer shooting at the dog.”

The officer then drove away, leaving Bobby bleeding profusely on the ground.

“I came back inside with my wife and kid. We were hugging each other crying because we were gonna miss him. He’s been with us for five years.”

After witnessing the shooting, Barboza’s father suffered from a nervous breakdown and had to be hospitalized. When the family returned home a few days later, they were surprised to learn that the dog was still alive.

“My wife called me up and she’s like, ‘Hey the dog’s alive!’ I was like, ‘What? Are you serious?’ She says ‘yeah.’ I was happy, I was happy my dog was alive!”

The officer claims that there have been a number of complaints about Bobby. Sources say that there has only been one filed officially, and it was dismissed. The case is still under investigation and the officer is still on duty in Teton County.

what is the thing about a few days later the family learns dog is alive, and the family went inside after the incident, what happened to the dog after the incident?
Wrong thing for the officer to do.

Sounds like the old west way of "shoot first, ask questions later."

This is really a mixed up story, why was the dog taken outside by an officer and not taken to the pound or vet to be euthed, why did the family stand and watch and do nothing, why did they not call 911 and report the officer and why did they not immediatly take their dog to the vet. Alot of unanswered questions here for me

Everyone in the story sounds awful! The police officer didn't have to euthanize Bobby with a shotgun, and the family LEFT their supposedly dying dog instead of going to a vet to have him checked out or humanely euthanized. This whole thing is messed up.

I really can't believe I'm reading this! Who in their right mind would actually take a dog out of someone's house and shoot it in their yard in front of them? I certainly hope he was reprimanded, fired, or something because of his actions.

Wow. Talk about complete unprofessionalism in every respect. That officer showed no respect for the animal, the family, or anyone else that was nearby and witnessed the shooting. I cannot believe that anyone would do that, but most especially a police officer. I cannot think of a worse way for the situation to have been handled - and look at what the immediate effect was on the family. Never mind the emotional trauma the kids will feel in years to come. Absolutely horrible.
Even if it was a vicious dog that was a threat to people, it does not deserve to be shot in the neck in his own front yard!
I hope the officer is removed from the police force.

This is a police officer? I hope they say that laughingly! What a disgrace! I'd like to see a follow up on what they do with him. He sounds like a "macho out to prove he's a man" sicko.

I am starting to really wonder about the people they are allowing to be on the police force. Why would anyone do this, there was no trial regarding this dog, he went there, got a gun and publicly killed this dog and in front of a bus full of children. What do there children think about police going forward, something to fear I would suspect. I can't imagine leaving the dog on the street like it was garbage. This Officer should NOT be on duty in my opinion.

Doesn't this constitute animal cruelty? If the dog was to be put down, wouldn't that require a Vet? Are cops allowed to fire their weapons in a neighborhood at a domestic animal. Sounds like excessive force to me and he should at the very least be suspended.

Just because he has a badge and orders to do this doesn't make it right. There is ways to handle things like this. The officer was way out of line, and I hope he is handled in the proper manner. Hopefuly suspended and time off.

Umm, isn't it illegal to shoot a dog? No matter what the circumstance? Goodness some people just don't care about animals at all. I'm glad the dog is alive, I hope he gets better soon.

How can a police officer get away with this? Aren't there laws? I thought that the dog warden needed to be involved, the owner goes to court where it is decided if the dog is a threat or not. This isn't so in all states?

As the old saying goes, "one bad apple". There are many many good police officers, but I am sorry to say, it does not sound like this officer falls into the good police officer catagory. Sounds like his actions need to be investigated.

People shouldn't have to be afraid to stand up to police officers! This jerk has had other comlaints, but only one "official" complaint filed? WHY? He should lose his job or at least be suspended from duty pending an investigation.

This is wrong on sooo many levels. I pray that this cop gets what he deserves!!!! Do people have morals anymore? I see that many of you (viewers) are animal lovers yourselves, so please someone out there tell me, how can we come together to put the right legislation in place and protect animals from abuse!!!!

Something is very wrong with this story. A police officer comes to the door, advices the owner that he has received a complain about the man's dog, and that he is there to "put the dog down". The owner just docilely goes and gets Bobby the Dog, without question or protest???Then the police officer shoots the dog with a rifle in front of a bunch of kids! If Bobby was running rabid a police officer might very well have shot him, but in this situation? To my knowledge we don't euthanize dogs with a rifle. This whole thing does not rest well with me.

Since when is it the police's job to kill a dog? What about animal control? What about civil procedure? The family needs to file a suit against the police officer and the police dept.

This is a very strange story. Euthanization by firearms? Not collecting the body? Multiple rounds fired by a police officer in an area where children are coming and going? Not determining that the animal is really dead? There is more going on here.
