Dog Shot In Front Of Kids

Browse News

TETON, ID – A Teton County family is thrilled to find that their dog is alive and recovering after being shot three times by a police officer.

Owner Leo Barboza says that the officer showed up at his front door asking to see his dog, Bobby.

The officer told Barboza that he received a complaint - Bobby had allegedly bitten someone and he was there to put the dog down.

While Barboza went to get Bobby, the officer got a rifle from his car. Barboza said the officer took the dog a few feet from the house where he fired three shots into the dog's neck.

“A bunch of kids, they just got off the bus and they were all on the street. All the kids were watching the officer shooting at the dog.”

The officer then drove away, leaving Bobby bleeding profusely on the ground.

“I came back inside with my wife and kid. We were hugging each other crying because we were gonna miss him. He’s been with us for five years.”

After witnessing the shooting, Barboza’s father suffered from a nervous breakdown and had to be hospitalized. When the family returned home a few days later, they were surprised to learn that the dog was still alive.

“My wife called me up and she’s like, ‘Hey the dog’s alive!’ I was like, ‘What? Are you serious?’ She says ‘yeah.’ I was happy, I was happy my dog was alive!”

The officer claims that there have been a number of complaints about Bobby. Sources say that there has only been one filed officially, and it was dismissed. The case is still under investigation and the officer is still on duty in Teton County.

Just because he has a badge and orders to do this doesn't make it right. There is ways to handle things like this. The officer was way out of line, and I hope he is handled in the proper manner. Hopefuly suspended and time off.

Umm, isn't it illegal to shoot a dog? No matter what the circumstance? Goodness some people just don't care about animals at all. I'm glad the dog is alive, I hope he gets better soon.

How can a police officer get away with this? Aren't there laws? I thought that the dog warden needed to be involved, the owner goes to court where it is decided if the dog is a threat or not. This isn't so in all states?

As the old saying goes, "one bad apple". There are many many good police officers, but I am sorry to say, it does not sound like this officer falls into the good police officer catagory. Sounds like his actions need to be investigated.

People shouldn't have to be afraid to stand up to police officers! This jerk has had other comlaints, but only one "official" complaint filed? WHY? He should lose his job or at least be suspended from duty pending an investigation.

This is wrong on sooo many levels. I pray that this cop gets what he deserves!!!! Do people have morals anymore? I see that many of you (viewers) are animal lovers yourselves, so please someone out there tell me, how can we come together to put the right legislation in place and protect animals from abuse!!!!

Something is very wrong with this story. A police officer comes to the door, advices the owner that he has received a complain about the man's dog, and that he is there to "put the dog down". The owner just docilely goes and gets Bobby the Dog, without question or protest???Then the police officer shoots the dog with a rifle in front of a bunch of kids! If Bobby was running rabid a police officer might very well have shot him, but in this situation? To my knowledge we don't euthanize dogs with a rifle. This whole thing does not rest well with me.

Since when is it the police's job to kill a dog? What about animal control? What about civil procedure? The family needs to file a suit against the police officer and the police dept.

Nothing like shooting first then finding out if they dog was at fault or to blame for the said accusations. How would that officer feel if someone did that to him?

This is a very strange story. Euthanization by firearms? Not collecting the body? Multiple rounds fired by a police officer in an area where children are coming and going? Not determining that the animal is really dead? There is more going on here.

The officer was definetly wrong to shot thie dog.
The other thing that bothers me is why didn't the owner take the dog to the Vet's immediately...and who did take him ? the article is unclear..the way I read it the family left him there, and returned in a few days ...

This is crazy!! The officer should be fired and have charges brought against him. I would sue the department he worked out of for everything they were worth!! Whatever happened to calling animal control first?? What about the fact that he fired the weapon with childern around and watching? Grrr... I hate seeing stories like this it makes me so mad and stupied people are allowed to get away with things like this!!

Are there no guidelines for investigating dog bites. That officer must hate dogs. How can you point blank kill an animal. The owner didnt object in anyway. Come on! My dogs have never bit anyone.but if they had, I would not just had them over for execution!

Are you kidding me? The officer should loose his job for firing his weapon with kids around. If you are in danger it's one thing. And why not call animal control and have him put down humanely. There is obviously something else going on here.

This whole story makes no sense. First, the police officer should be suspended for his lack of sensitivity. Second, did he have a warrant? Third, this sentense made no sense: "When the family returned home a few days later, they were surprised to learn that the dog was still alive." Why didn't the owner take his dog to a vet right away?

Just because he's a cop doesn't make him jury and executioner....he's way outta line and shouldn't be on duty and should be made to pay the vet bills. Obviously he has a "I'm It" problem!

This is definitely a case of an officer overstepping his boundaries as a law enforcement official. Unfortunately, there are sometimes bad people who are cops. I hope he gets the punishment he deserves and is no longer allowed to wear the shield.

This doesn't sound right. First of all the cop should have taken the dog to a shelter to be euthanized if he had legal legimate complaints, not shoot him. It sounds like this may be a bad cop trying to take the law into his own hands or possibly help someone who's robbing houses in the area. He's probably taking payoffs to get rid of dogs for the thieves.

Something is definitely not right with this story. Who would turn over their dog to the police on just their say so? Who would stand by and watch while the officer shot the dog in front of children and then leave the dog there bleeding. Now they are happy that the dog is alive? I think the officer should be shot and the dog placed with someone who is responsible and cares what happens to the dog.

Cop or not, you do not show up at my door and say you're shooting my dog because of complaints. If you don't have the legal papers in hand and I haven't had my day in court, you better back off! What that cop did was abuse. There was nothing legal about this situation and I would be suing the cop and the cop shop.

This seems so unreal. The police officer should be fired. I cannot believe the owner would turn over the dog so easily without questions. The owner did not even look at the dog before joining his family. Makes me wonder how much the dog was really loved.

I can't believe what I read in this story. First, I have never heard of a dog being put down in that sort of fashion. And secondly, I have never heard of a dog being put down after one complaint. I hope the officer who did this is punished for his lack of common sense and decencey. I am also slightly confused as to why even one of the family members would of gone up to the dog after it was shot, that's the very first thing I would of done. But then again I wouldn't of never let an officer kill my dog in my front yard.
