Dog Receives Human Cancer Treatment

TEXAS – An oncologist from McKinney, Texas has seen his fair share of cancer patients, but his four-legged friend, Bubba, is closer than most.

Nine-year-old Bubba, a black Labrador retriever, is just one of five dogs owned and loved by McKinney Regional Cancer Center medical director, Dr. Dennis Birenhaum. He said the dogs are his best friends and he cares about them like he does people.

He noticed a bump on Bubba’s hind left hip a few years ago. Birenhaum took him to the vet for x-rays which revealed Bubba had soft tissue sarcoma. The vet recommended amputation of the lab’s leg and hip, but this was not what Birenhaum had in mind.

Birenhaum, who has insurance on all of his pets, said he wanted to treat Bubba with chemotherapy and radiation, like he does with humans.

He sought three more opinions before developing a regimen for Bubba. The dog responded very well to the treatment and was in remission for nearly two years until another bump appeared. He began a new round of chemo earlier this month and will have another in January.

Bubba’s radiation oncologist, Dr. Philip Treul, said he’s thrilled with the results and you would never know anything happened to Bubba. Birenhaum agreed and said he acts like a normal, happy and healthy dog.

Birenhaum said a similar situation happened when he learned that Petey, one of his miniature dachshunds had acquired hemolytic anemia.

Vets advised him to put the dog down but he refused. He said he wouldn’t put his son down and this was no different. And with the help of some steroids, Petey is doing just fine.

I really hope this dog is going to be alright. It seems these days that cancer is so common among dogs. I hope through research more is able to be done to prevent and help cancer stricken animals.

This is exciting news but unfortunately most of us will never be able to afford this kind of treatment for our pets. As with health care in this country, vet care for very sick animals is something most of us can not afford. Wonder if Obama can create a national vet care plan??? :)

I am glad they are trying new things, not only for the pets healthy, but it could lead to breakthroughs for humans as well. Good job everyone.

That is interesting. I am surprised that a treatment that works with human physiology would also work with a dog.

Without a doubt, Dr. Birenhaum loves his dogs very much. Obviously, he is experienced with the uses of chemotherapy and radiation treatments in treating cancer. Happily he can afford the treatments and carries pet insurance. Good for him and his dogs.

Chemotherapy is generally better tolerated by dogs than by people, and the treatment is usually of shorter duration. If recommended by the vet and affordable for the owner, it can often make the animal feel better and extend her life.

Nice story! Nothing like this would be available in our area so I would have had to have the leg removed and would do it if that was what it took to save my pet!

Amazing story. It just makes sense but wow the cost of vets is already high. I can't imagine what this would cost.

Interesting and amazing how we are able to expand the lives of our dogs. I'm glad he didn't amputate. As long as he has the funds and wants to go through the process then kudos to him!

With pet insurance and all the changes that are being made in medical care for pets we will be able to do more and more for them. The doctor was lucky he was in a position toe take the next step with his pet.

I think this is wonderful to go the extra mile if it is really in the best interest of the pet. In some cases, I see people throwing thousands of dollars and pursuing very aggressive treatments just to prolong the animal's life a little out of selfish motivation. Sometimes, the animal has to endure a lot of pain, recovery time, and still never feels like themselves. I hope people base their decisions on what is truly the animal's best interest and thinks about the animal's quality of life.
