DURHAM N.C. - A North Carolina teen was arrested for driving while impaired and underage drinking. His capture was the result of the work of four local dogs and some smart police work.

Josue Herrios Cornilla crashed his black Camaro into a Durham man's yard after driving on the wrong side of the road last week.

The 18-year-old fled the scene, leaving a wrecked fence, smashed bushes and his broken-down car in the yard. He also left a trail leading from the scene.

The yard he trashed was the play space for four dogs, who were luckily not outside at the time on the incident. But Herrios-Cornilla stepped in dog doo left by the animals. As he exited the scene, the teen apparently stepped in the waste, leaving a trail down the street.

An officer who responded to the call noticed the smelly clue and followed it. As he did so, he noticed a white van heading toward him. He stopped the vehicle and asked its passenger to step out.

The officer reported that the passenger smelled of alcohol and had dog poop on his shoe – which likely matched prints left in the yard. The officer then arrested Herrios-Cornilla, who was later released on $1,500 bail.
