Dog Nappers Target Nashville Pure Breeds

Browse News

COLLEGE GROVE, Tenn. – A kidnapping is every parent’s worst nightmare, but for several Tennessee families, it’s their four-legged, furry kids that have been whisked away.

In the quiet, usually crime-free town of College Grove, several families have had their American Kennel Club-registered pets stolen from their residential properties.

The families are worried that the pure-breeds might have fallen into the hands of someone hoping to make a quick buck by selling them at a local flea market.

A Saint Bernard named Morris has been missing from the Brown family for weeks.

“I just think that they got up close to the road, and somebody just dropped the tailgate and picked him up,” Jim Brown, Morris’ owner, said. “He was that kind of dog. He was very lovable, very gentle, very kid oriented.”

For the Toddy family, who lives just two miles away, their Australian Shepherd, named Chester, has also gone missing.

“This Thursday will be two weeks, and surely somebody has seen him,” Chester’s owner Laura Toddy said.

Unfortunately, the Brown and Toddy families aren’t the only ones in the community missing their beloved pets. Flyers blanket the window and door of the College Grove Market with the faces of lost dogs.

“You just don’t have that many purebred dogs come up missing all within two or three days of each other,” Toddy said.

In an area where crime has never been a problem, residents are baffled by the missing canines, most which have been gone for about three weeks.

Desperate pet owners hope that signs posted at the College Grove Market, the community’s focal point, will help them find their missing animals.

“We encourage people to bring signs down and put posters up and leave their telephone numbers and descriptions,” said a College Grove Market worker.

In the meantime, Jenny Brown has covered hundreds of miles driving around the region looking for her dog and posting at least 100 fliers.

“I get up every day and (there’s) another lead. If I have someone call, and (it gives me) another direction, but I have four directions to go in, and I don’t know if I’m hitting the right one or not,” Morris’ owner Jenny Brown said.

The pet owners hope their family members are being treated well; they struggle with not knowing.

“It’s an everyday thing, because I worry if he’s eating, I just worry if he’s happy, and we want him back home,” said Brown, wife of Jim Brown. “Our boys (worry), he’s their dog, too, and he’s just part of our family.”

Anyone with information about the stolen dogs can call the College Grove Market at 615-368-7129.

It is horrible that people are stealing animals when there are so many animals out there that do not even have a home. Why don't they just adopt a poor homeless shelter dog! Believe or not there are plenty of purebred animals in shelters!

I agree that it seems strange that registered AKC dogs are the target; these people have definitely done there homework. But, once again, I don't believe any dog, registered or not, should be left outside, especially in the front of a home (gated or not) unattended. Unfortunately, these days it's a good way of losing your pet.

I'm sorry these people have lost their dogs. But please walk your dog on a leash. No one person or animal is safe anymore.

You really need to monitor your pet when it is outside. Don't leave it alone. Just like with your kids. There is no such thing as a safe neighborhood anymore. I hope these animals are safe and no harm comes to them.

this is terrible. i do hope the animals are being treated well. i also hope the kidnappers are caught and thrown in jail.

Grrrr. I can't stand the thought of anyone being so cruel as to take babies (and yes, that's what animals are) away from their families. When will this become a felony?

How awful. The same thing happened to a friend of mine. She left her dogs out in back yard to enjoy the nice weather while she was at work all day and when she came home, one of them had been stolen. I say if caught, throw the book at them, just the same as if they had kidnapped a child.

This is so sad. I feel so bad for these families. We can only hope that these dogs are okay, and in a place that they are being treated well. I would be absolutely devestated. I don't mean to rub salt in anyones wound, but I never leave my dogs out alone.

I'm betting it's for resale, pretend breeders. They probably have fake registration papers on them. That's pretty low when you can't even spend the time to raise and care for them, you have to take them from someone else.

I truly believe that not only should our pets be microchipped, but they should also be "Lo-jacked".

There now is available a lo-jack type collar for dogs that works with a GPS system, but the technology is still too bulky to insert under the skin like a microchip. So dognappers could just take the collar off. What a terrible story. I feel so badly for those poor people and their dogs. I'm sure whoever took the dogs are up to no good.

Sorry for those families. I also hope the dogs are recovered and there is an update for this article and the nappers are caught. It sounds like people who know the area and the lifestyle of the people who live there. They must be assuming that the dogs aren't chipped or on any kind of GP System.

The sad truth is that our dogs and cats are only safe in their own homes. Cats are never safe out of doors ~ and dogs aren't safe even in the confines of a fenced back yard, or even their owners cars! And that is true in Nashville, or anywhere else! In the case of Nashville ~ sounds like some kind of organized theft, maybe for the purpose of resale. Nasty people!

I also pray for their safe return and hope that whoever took them is taking care of them or has found someone else that is. Maybe some of them will be microchipped and will eventually be reunited with their original owners. I can't imagine how distraught they must be.

This sounds a bit questionable..the dog was that close to the road??? He shouldn't have been. Don't you watch your children when they're outside? Same premise.

I would just be sick worrying. I live in the country where people let their dogs run free. I let mine out and if I don't know where they are for 5 minutes I start to worry. Mine are city dogs in the country.

Learn from this! Do NOT leave your dog outside unattended. It doesn't matter if you have a fenced-in yard. Also, it upsets me when people tie out their dogs. My yard is not fenced in. Every time Cookie goes out (which is probably about 8 times per day), he is walked on a leash. It's good exercise for me. It's great for him since he loves other people (good socialization)...and the kids in the neighborhood love him. I would never tie him outside. Even if he weren't stolen, I'd be afraid he'd get into it with a groundhog or another dog. I'd love to fence in my backyard...but to play with him there...not to leave him alone.
My heart does go out to those families.

How were these pets snatched so easily? Sounds like they were outside unsupervised - not good. I'd never leave my dog outside without being with her.
