Dog-nappers Pose as Animal Control

Browse News

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - According to news station KMOV in Missouri, two men are posing as animal control officers so they can steal people's animals.

According to the report, two men dressed in plain clothes went to the home of Kathleen Spink. The men claimed to be animal control officers, and that they were confiscating her dog Gizmo because it wasn't on a leash.

Suspicious of the men, Spink called local animal control who verified that the men were not who they claimed to be. They left soon after – Gizmo safely with his mother.

They didn't have any identification, Spink says, but they were driving a white van with an animal logo. It looked similar to St. Charles County Humane Services vehicles.

It's unknown what the men intended to do with Gizmo, and that is the most frightening part of this story. Animal control reps say asking for identification in these cases is a must – and not to be afraid to call animal services to verify someone's identity.

By the way, Spink's yard is fenced in, and Gizmo was playing with another family dog in the yard when the incident occurred. There are no other reports of similar activity in the St. Charles area.

What a scarey story. You just have to be so very careful these days. The owner did the right thing but calling to check and see if these men were who they said they were. I am glad little Gizmo is safe.

Good for Ms. Spink. Any legitimate law enforcement officer will not mind if you check.

I agree, this is absolutely terrible and very, very scary! I hope there weren't any other animals in the van. Thank God this woman decided to investigate!

Just another security issue that pet owners need to be aware of. Since these are our children, we need to take the same precautions as a parent would do with a small child, beware of strangers.

How fortunate that the woman was suspicious of the men trying to take her dog!! That's a scary prospect ~ having people you ordinarily trust, out to steal your dog. And what would have happened next to the poor dogs?

As if there aren't enough bad people in this world already someone always comes up with new nasty thing like this. Thank goodness the owner checked. I had a coworker that lost her dog by people stealing it out of a fenced yard. Unfortunately all she received was bogus responses to an offered reward and never got her dog back.

sounds like dog poachers to me. what were their plans for the dog? animal labratories, dog fighting ring, resale? luckily the dogs owners was quick thinking enough to call her local animal control but its too bad they are still on the loose.

As another commenter said..great thinking on the part of the dog owner. Not enough information here. What kind of dog was Gizmo, pure bred or mixed breed? That would tell me a little more about the potential intent of the would be thieves. If pure bred, possibly to resell but if mixed breed possibly to sell to laboratories or like which would be even more disturbing.

It is great for stories like this to put owners on alert.

Good fast thinking on the part of Kathleen Spink. All too often lately we hear stories of perverts posing as police officers, now we have sons of bitches posing as animal control officers. If animal control comes to one's door, you must demand identification. My next step would be call my local animal control and ascertain exactly what the problem was. I certainly would not surrender my animal just like that.

Thank God they did not try to force their way in & steal Gizmo. I live in Missouri & I've not heard of this till now. Just another reason to keep an eye on your pets when they're outside. She did the right thing by calling to verify.

Thank goodness Gizmo has a smart mommy. This just goes to show you that people are capable of going to any lengths to take your pet. I'm glad she asked for i.d. and called animal control herself. I hope there weren't any other pets in this van. Just terrible.

Good Grief! No one is safe anymore. At least the owner had the common sense to call and verify. I guess I would be cautious considering the dogs were in a fenced back yard and that isn't a crime!

Thank goodness this woman had the good sense to call someone else and not just
take their word for it. This is scary because a lot of people especially the elderly would
just have turned their dog over to them.

Wow what these dog napping people do and try to get away with. I don't care who you are if you tell me you are confiscating my animals you better bring the army with you. I'm glad she stood her ground because if these people got Gizmo where and what would they have done with him. Scary.

A scary story indeed ~ it's not bad enough that Class B dog dealers steal pets from back yards, now we have low-lifes actually going up to someone's door and actually demanding their pet, while pretending to be an official!!

Thank goodness Gizmo's Mom was suspicious enough to check the two men out, before she handed over her dog. I wonder how many people that ploy worked on, and I wonder what they are doing with the dogs they get? Scary!! We're always taught to respect people in authority, and to comply with their demands!
