Dog Lives with Arrow in Chest, Unknown How Long

NORTON SHORES, Mich. - A Michigan couple is comforting their two-year-old chocolate Labrador after it had surgery to remove an arrow that was lodged in its chest for an unknown amount of time.

Scott and Kelly Cornelisse adopted Remington about six-months ago from an acquaintance. But recently they noticed the dog seemed lethargic and unwilling to play.

Scott picked up the dog and noticed a bump in his torso, which the couple believed to be a broken bone.

After receiving an X-ray, veterinary Dr. Steven Harden of the Clarke Animal Hospital revealed that an eight-and-a-half-inch alimunum arrow shaft was lodged in the dog's chest, just missing the heart.

Dr. Harden said that the arrow had likely shifted the day that the Cornelisses noticed Remington's change in behavior. He went on to say that this case is unique because of the length of time the arrow was inside the dog's body.

The couple says they have no idea how the arrow got in there, and neither do the previous owners. The wound created when the arrow initially entered had apparently healed. But this is certainly a testament to the strength and will of canines.

A surgery was needed to remove the arrow, but the Conrelisses were unable to afford it. However, Dr. Harden volunteered to perform the operation free of charge. He said he was more worried about setting the wound than the surgery itself. However, the procedure only took three minutes and seems to have gone well.

But Remington seems no worse for the wear and has nearly fully healed.

Too odd that the previous owner (original owners?) were not aware of an 8" arrow? Could this be the reason they got rid of the dog?

Eight and a half inches! WHen I read the title head I thought that they meant an arrowhead.

I'm so glad there are still vets who care more about animals than about money. Poor dog! I'm thankful he got the care he needed. May he have a long and healthy life.

How in the world did this happen? What are the chances that it stayed put for so long. Kudos to the vet for volunteering to do the surgery. I hope the dog has a long and happy life (arrow-free).

We had a cat at our shelter that went in for spaying and the vet found a Bic pen inside her. She recovered. I wonder if someone shot the dog on purpose or accidentially without knowing it had been shot. I am glad it has recovered.

We definitely need more vets like this one. More concerned about the patient than making a buck. I'd say he paid it forward!

I found this story amazing! And what a terrific vet to offer to do the surgery for free! Now there is someone who really is in it for the animals. In today's world I think people should think twice about letting their dog outside without supervision - you never know what can happen to them!

Boy, I hate hunting with bow and arrow ~ all kinds of animals (especially deer) end up not dying for awhile, but instead become sick from infection and die slowly. Terrible. And who would shot someone's dog? I'm glad that Remington's owner's took him to the vet, and hopefully all will be well after he recovers.

They were lucky that they found it before it became a serious problem. I like to hear stories of vets helping out folks who can't afford some of the treatments needed to help their pets.

What a story! Dr. Harden is a hero for helping this dog even though he was not being paid for the surgery. I am so happy to hear that Remington is on the mend!

I can't believe the dog was still alive, it looks like it would have gotten infected or something.

That's amazing how the dog was still alive, and even more amazing of the Vet how donated his time to do the surgery on the dog to remove the arrow.
