Dog Lifts Spirits in Kids' Cancer Ward

Browse News

TAMPA, Fla. -- A gleeful chorus of “Happy Birthday,” party hats, cake, games and goodie bags – what girl wouldn’t enjoy a birthday celebration like this? For a pet therapy dog named Gracie, which happened to be the guest of honor, the most important part of the party were her guests.

All were children at St. Joseph’s All Children’s Hospital in Tampa, Fla. For many, this was a slice of “normal” life that most kids enjoy that they rarely do.

“It’s the most incredible thing,” said Gracie’s owner Ileana Berger, as she surveyed the room of party guests and their families.

Some of the children are so sick they couldn’t even walk to the lobby of the hospital where the party was being held. Some were carted down in cushioned wagons and wheelchairs. Others slowly plodded along guiding their IV stands with them. Streamers, balloons, and a table filled with markers and papers so they could make homemade cards greeted them.

Gracie is Berger’s second dog that she certified to become a pet therapy dog. Her previous dog, Sasha, was retired at the age of 15, and passed away at 16.

“I think the reason she lived as long as she did because the job kept her alive. She felt important, and wanted and loved,” Berger said.

After mingling with her party guests, Gracie went upstairs to the cancer ward. One of her biggest fans, a little girl named Sierra, couldn’t make it to the party. Leukemia keeps her stuck in the hospital room. So, from the doorway, Gracie performed “the cookie trick” – during which Berger places a dog cookie on Gracie’s snout. Gracie patiently waits for the go ahead. As soon as Berger gives the ok, she flicks the cookie in the air and catches it in her mouth.

Sierra beamed.

“There’s not many things that put a smile on her face in this hospital,” Sierra’s mother Mary Lynn Kesler said. “But Gracie definitely does and I’m so thankful she’s part of this hospital.”

So is Akera Keno, a pre-teen who has returned to the hospital for a second round of chemotherapy. Her condition is such that visitors must wash their hands before entering her room, must wear a mask, and must wash their hands upon leaving her room.

It was clear Gracie had been in this room before. When given the ok to enter on the leash with Berger, she simply walked to Keno’s feet and laid down. Keno said just seeing her makes her feel better.

“When I feel down she just … she just makes me feel happy,” she said.

I totally believe in and support all people and their beloved pets who do so much to make the lives of other's more positive. Even to the most hardened heart, an animal has a way of breaking down a person's defenses. Ultimately, people are won over by these therapy animals and a little joy is brought into their lives.

Sick children need animals that are like this one. They can communicate with them sometimes better than with thier own caregivers. This has been a fact for ages.

I have a nephew with cerebral palsy who has spent a lot of time in Phoenix's Children Hospital. They, too, have dogs like Gracie who visit the children. My nephew is bedridden, and the smile these therapy dogs bring to his face are amazing, even on a bad day. The ones that have visited my nephew, very gently, crawl onto his bed and just take in all the hugs and petting that he has to give. It's so wonderful to see!

My boyfriend is an inpatient currently at the Children's Hospital in colorado, undergoing treatment for leukemia. We love it when the doggies come to visit, as do the other patients and visiting family members. There was even a Jack Russell terrier who was so well behaved.

I think it's wonderful that the dog can be a part of the children's therapy. It's a win-win situation. I wish the pet therapy programs were a lot more widespread.

Every time I hear of therapy dogs it brings a tear to my eye. They do such amazing work, work that people can't do, and not just for kids but adults and the elderly as well. I certainly wish that if I ever end up in the hospital I am visited regularly by one of the thousands of great therapy dogs! What they do has no price!

I agree. Animals can really help brighten a patient's day!

Imagine all the places where our special animals could save lives by giving back a reason to live: veterans' hospitals, nursing homes, children's cancer wards, a special area of hospitals where patients could come to just revel in the sweetness that our dear animals exude! There's a reason that d-o-g spelled in reverse is G-o-d! Let's consider our pets when we consider ways in which to volunteer. We are already the recipients of angels in fur clothing; why not find ways to share this miracle? I'm picturing the guys in veterans' hospitals that have no family at all, who would maybe regain hope if they knew they had "a special friend" coming to visit! Maybe these places could even become places for foster care and adoptions, because there is so much love to give -- the world is filled with people whose hearts need the love of animals! My Wiggles Blue Heeler cattle dog is one such special dog. Although he's been blind for 3 1/2 years, he still loves everyone and is just so happy to "go places and meet people," as I say to him before we go out on new adventures! Of course, we always travel for his comfort and safety, so he has fresh water, treats, bowls, cleaning wipes, and more. He's especially sweet to the elderly and very young, especially those that may be a bit timid around dogs. Wiggles just flattens himself to the floor and drags himself slowly, making himself as small and non-threatening as possible.

I love that animals can be used to help put smiles on faces of children and seniors. I applaud the trainers and owners of these dogs. It must take a lot of work and definitely a lot of love to share their pets like that.

Not only do I have 2 family members with cancer, but I also have a grandfather with Alzheimer's disease. He also LOVES to see any of the family pets. When I put a photo of Kelsie in his cards for all occasions, he just grins from ear to ear. I love to see any of these 3 family members smile, just to know they have a little ray of joy does my heart good.

I 2 family members with cancer and it's always nice to give them a beam of joy, even if it is a brief moment. Their smiles are worth more than all the money in the world to me.

They did! They also had mean old nurses in severly starched uniforms who would have killed you the instant that they saw a "filthy animal" on their floor. I swear - some of those nurses uniforms had to have had enough starch in them that they would have stood in the corner till they got ready to put them on! Now the nurses wear comfortable clothes with cartoon characters on them. They also smile a lot more and are nowhere as stern as they used to be.

It's always nice to read a story like this. We all know how much better it makes us feel when we have animals around so I think that we need to remind our lawmakers of the benefits and see if we can convince them to actually enact some meaningful legislation to protect them. Perhaps the best idea would be to have some folks take therapy dogs to visit the congress. Talk about the opportunity to make a difference!!!
