Dog Lifts Spirits in Kids' Cancer Ward

Browse News

TAMPA, Fla. -- A gleeful chorus of “Happy Birthday,” party hats, cake, games and goodie bags – what girl wouldn’t enjoy a birthday celebration like this? For a pet therapy dog named Gracie, which happened to be the guest of honor, the most important part of the party were her guests.

All were children at St. Joseph’s All Children’s Hospital in Tampa, Fla. For many, this was a slice of “normal” life that most kids enjoy that they rarely do.

“It’s the most incredible thing,” said Gracie’s owner Ileana Berger, as she surveyed the room of party guests and their families.

Some of the children are so sick they couldn’t even walk to the lobby of the hospital where the party was being held. Some were carted down in cushioned wagons and wheelchairs. Others slowly plodded along guiding their IV stands with them. Streamers, balloons, and a table filled with markers and papers so they could make homemade cards greeted them.

Gracie is Berger’s second dog that she certified to become a pet therapy dog. Her previous dog, Sasha, was retired at the age of 15, and passed away at 16.

“I think the reason she lived as long as she did because the job kept her alive. She felt important, and wanted and loved,” Berger said.

After mingling with her party guests, Gracie went upstairs to the cancer ward. One of her biggest fans, a little girl named Sierra, couldn’t make it to the party. Leukemia keeps her stuck in the hospital room. So, from the doorway, Gracie performed “the cookie trick” – during which Berger places a dog cookie on Gracie’s snout. Gracie patiently waits for the go ahead. As soon as Berger gives the ok, she flicks the cookie in the air and catches it in her mouth.

Sierra beamed.

“There’s not many things that put a smile on her face in this hospital,” Sierra’s mother Mary Lynn Kesler said. “But Gracie definitely does and I’m so thankful she’s part of this hospital.”

So is Akera Keno, a pre-teen who has returned to the hospital for a second round of chemotherapy. Her condition is such that visitors must wash their hands before entering her room, must wear a mask, and must wash their hands upon leaving her room.

It was clear Gracie had been in this room before. When given the ok to enter on the leash with Berger, she simply walked to Keno’s feet and laid down. Keno said just seeing her makes her feel better.

“When I feel down she just … she just makes me feel happy,” she said.

What a FANTASTIC story- I do feel these canine friends can bring so much joy to some who need it so much..... It's wonderful to read such a story that helps these kids feel better, if only for a while. It certainly makes me wonder about survival rates as they relate to patients who have loved pets at home vs. no pets.

It is so wonderful , what these dogs are doing. That they are able to bring so much happiness and some normal activity to these sick children is just great. It must also be very rewarding to the dogs owner.

When I started my first job out of college, I had a medium sized terrier mix who would often go to work with me at the state psychiatric hospital where I worked. It was amazing to see how people would come out of themselves and interact with her. She always seemed to know who should she should spend time with and who she should give wide berth to.

This is a great program. Is there anything more natural than a pet and a child. It only makes sense that the dogs bring so much joy to a sick child.

Pets are healers & angels! There is scientific proof that they help us heal from our illnesses. I know if I was in a nursing home or a cancer ward, I'd look forward to visits from furry friends!

Therapy dogs are angels with fur! I helped my friend's special education class give the therapy dog who visits them a birthday party, and it was fantastic. The kids baked the food for the humans, and I made the dog cake. My friend brought the kids to the store to pick out some presents to give the dog. The dog really enjoyed it, and showed off her best party tricks.

Therapy dogs are wonderful! I have been visited by them in the hospital, my mother had one visiting her in her last months of life, and I gave my corgie-sheltie shelter dog away to be a nursing home schmoozer, where he brightens everyone's life there (and loves it). It's the best idea ever.

You know, i think dogs are sometimes the best treatment when someone is sick, our dog likes to sleep in with me in the morning, because his daddy gets up early (we both dont like the noise he makes) but when im sick he doesnt leave my side either. this dog in the story is probably saving childrens spirits every day!

My friend has a therapy dog that goes to nursing homes with her. People don't realize that this is real work for the animal too who goes through a lot of training before the dog gets its certification. I can't think of a more pleasant & welcome sight to patients than to see a real dog they can pet, hug, and talk to. Makes the patients forget all their troubles during those moments. God Bless the patients and the pet therapy dogs and the handlers! Keep up the good work!

There is nothing in this world that can give us the feeling of love and contentment as the joy a dog can bring to you by just being there. Service dogs are the best thing that could happen.

Awesome story. Happiness for the children that really need it! Pets are wonderful at giving unconditional love & attention when you need it. I hope Gracie is loved & well taken care of at home also. She needs down time to play, nap & just be a dog as well. Great thing this lady is doing though for the dogs, hospitals & patients as well. A win-win situation all the way around. Sorry to hear Sasha passed away. She had a mighty long life though & I am sure was very loved by many!
