Dog Killed by Poison Intended for Stray Cats

DELTA, Colo. –- An eastern Colorado woman faces a cruelty to animals charge after a dog drank poisoned soup she left out for stray cats.
Susan Irene Weiss said she believed the antifreeze she mixed in with chicken soup would only make the stray cats sick and discourage them from coming back to her yard. But a neighbor’s Chihuahua found the soup first, and later died.
“She said, ‘Yeah I have a feral cat problem. They were coming into my yard and doing their business,’” said Delta Chief of Police Roger Christian. “She didn’t want them in her yard, and she felt that this is what she could do –- she didn’t think it was going to kill anything, she thought it was going to give them a tummy ache.”
Chief Christian said Weiss feels remorseful for the dog’s death, but he acknowledges the city does have a feral cat problem.
“The city of Delta has quite a few feral cats,” said Chief Christian. “We’re rural;, said Chief Christian. “aA lot of the cats are dumped all over the city, and there’s increasingly becoming more and more of them.”
But according to the Chief, what Delta doesn’t have is a Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return program.
“We try to control (the cats) through our animal resource officers –- we try to rehab as many cats as possible and adopt them out,” he said. “We have a small feral cat problem.”
Luckily for the felines, the bowl containing the anti-freeze has been taken as evidence. And Weiss now knows that she can’t be poisoning animals.
While it’s unknown how long Weiss was practicing this method, there are no other reports of poisoned animals in the area.
“Well, it’s unfortunate that it happened,” said Chief Christian. “I know that this lady was very remorseful ... it’s one of those things we’re going to have to work through.”
The responsibility, he said, lies in the hands of not only Weiss, but pet owners, too. Delta city law requires animals to be kept in their yards if unattended. The Chihuahua’s death could have been prevented had his owner kept closer tabs.

My opinion is that she most certainly did know what anti freeze would do. also why didn't she either buy a couple of trap cages or asked the humane office to borrow a couple.
That poor little dog, I sure hope that she has to take some classes on abused animals.

The article briefly mentioned that the area does not have a TNR program, so they're obviously aware of the concept. I sure hope they're implenting a TNR program very soon. That is by far the best answer to that area's problems.

Remorse? Yea, remorse for not killing the stray cats.
We know what trapping & rehabilitating a feral cat involves when animal control does it...That cat never sees the adoption room and is immediately taken in the back room and euthanized.
People...google TNR Every City needs this program.
This poor chihuahua died by the criminal act of this lady putting out poison in food for anyone to consume. It's time to stop blaming the Chihuahua's owners for his death & stop blaming the stray and feral cats for someone else's criminal act!
May you rest in peace little one...so sorry for your family's heartbreaking loss.

As for the other family with the ChiChi, what was it doing out of their yard? Dogs shouldn't be running loose either.

The dog owner was also very irresponsible - a lot of people in my neighborhood let their dogs run wild. Tonight on my walk I was followed for 1/2 block by a friendly spaniel. Then they'll hang a sign up in the subdivision looking for the pet they let run wild. I don't feel sorry for them, I feel sorry for the lost pet and hope that it found a better home and was not hit by a car.

First off, the lady is an idiot, and I'm sure knows that the cats (or any other animal) that drinks the poison would probably die. Secondly, the owner of the dog should not let his dog run around the neiborhood like that. He should be more cautious that his dog could get hurt or killed.
And last, the stupid people who just dispose of their animals by dropping them off on the side of the road like that.
When will people realize that owning a pet is a responsibilty, mush like having a small child. They are not simply toys that you can get just to play with when you feel like it. They need feed and cared for. Yet again people are the cause that horrible things like this happen...
And help control the pet population... remember to spay or neuter your pet.
