Dog Gnaws Off Own Leg to Escape Abuse

MADISONVILLE, Tenn. -- Choosing between life or limb, a Tennessee Saint Bernard has a remarkable survival story, but it came at the result of animal cruelty.

Readers, please, be warned, this story may not be suitable for everyone due to its graphic content.

Nicknamed Panda by rescuers, the dog was found hobbling on three legs at the home of Adolfo Lopez.

The discovery was made Tuesday, April 1, when county investigators followed up on a tip.

“It’s probably one of the most horrible animal cruelty cases I’ve seen,” said Nancy McEntee, an animal cruelty investigator for Monroe County.

Investigators believe Panda became trapped between her collar and wire cord, which lead the desperate animal to gnaw off her own leg to escape.

“The tendons were hanging out, the bone was exposed,” said McEntee. “We found out later she had maggots in the injury, which says it was long-term, it didn’t just happen overnight.”

The Saint Bernard was taken to a vet at the Monroe County Friends of Animals, where the rest of her hind leg was amputated. Currently, she is with the Smokey Mountain Saint Bernard Rescue, where she will stay until a new home is found for her.

“She’s getting along great with her leg, you know,” said Weaver. “It ain’t stopped her. She’s still got the heart of a Saint, so we’re really proud of being able to help her in her time of need right now, to let her know that there ain’t just mean people out there ... there’s kind hearted ones, too.”

With applications from possible new owners being accepted, Weaver is fostering and rehabilitating Panda in her own home.

“We think Panda’s going to be one of the lucky ones to make it,” said Weaver.

While the investigation continues, Lopez -- the alleged owner -- was charged with animal cruelty on Thursday, April 3.

Now, the Monroe County Friends of Animals is hoping the owner will be made responsible for the vet bill of more than $1,000. Until then, the shelter will rely on donations to cover Panda’s expenses.

To make a donation, the shelter can be reached at friendsofanimalsmc. Adoption information for Panda can be found at smokeymountainsaints.tripod.com.

It should be illegal to use wire in any way to tie a dog, cat, horse, whatever. So many terrible injuries and abuse cases have resulted from this, embedded collars for dogs, ruined feet on horses. If your animal can get through a rope, use a chain. If you feel you have to keep your animal tied up unattended for hours or days, you don't need to own an animal.

Poor Panda! Why does people get animals just to abuse them?! For the life of me, I can't imagine why anyone would want to hurt such innocent creatures. I hope you find a really great family, Panda. God bless you!

I say we tie up the owner. Then make him pay all the vet bills and ban him from ever owning any animal ever again

It's sad when the dog has to resort to these measures to free itself. I wonder if anyone in the neighborhood had noticed the abuse before this even happened. if so shame on them for not reporting it sooner. i hope panda's owner gets the book thrown at him!

This happened to the dog that my mom recently rescued. The dog was caught in a bear trap and went to the utmost extreme to get free. -The dog then was running around in the neighborhood for TWO WEEKS before anyone called animal control to come and help the poor thing! -An animal lover paid for its surgery at the local shelter and then she went into a rehab program called 'Death Row Dogs', following which all the other dogs in the program were adopted except her, and the shelter was finally at the end of their rope with her. They had no other choice but to put her on the next euthanaisia list. -That is when my mom got one of those emails that shelters around here send out as a last hope to find these dogs a home before they get euthanized. -She immidately called and went and got the dog!

It just goes to show how stupid, cruel and inhumane people can be when it comes to their pets. -But it also shows how much animal lovers will do to help.

Another horrific story of animal abuse and animal neglect. Until the prison system can accomodate these sort of criminals, this type of abuse will continue. And the people who say, "oh, it's just a dog", well anyone who can treat a dog this way will certainly be able to hurt humans too. That is why they need to do prison time if they are convicted of acts this disgusting. A poor defenseless animal; did he ever think that he might not be a good choice for a pet owner? Guess not. I hope there are no young children in the home that cannot defend themselves from this sort of horrific treatment. This is why we pet lovers must be diligent, keep our eyes open and report suspected abuse. If you even suspect animal cruetly, call animal control or the police. It is better to be wrong than ignore a possible tragedy such as this.

Good point! -You know a large number of the kids involved in school shootings several years back killed and tortured their family pets before they resorted to killing people in school. -Killing and torturing a dog or a cat should have been the first sign that something was wrong.

This is just awful. What are people thinking when they purchase these pets? So glad the St. Bernard is doing well and I hope his owner is punished to the max for this crime.

I believe that the owner should pay the vet bill since he was suppose to been responsible for this dog. Therefore he should be reliable for any and all cost for the bill. I think he should be charged with the worst possible offence that he can get and to never be allowed to own a pet of any kind. No animal should have to go through this or any abuse of any kind.

If you didn't want the responsiblity give the animal to someone who does. This is just horrible. I hope this person is never allowed to have another animal in their life.

WHO ELSE THINKS THIS IS DISTURBING? The person who left them tied out should have his leg almost amputated with maggots on it. That is my opinion.

That is very sad. That is the first time i have ever heard of a situation like that. It must have been hell living with those stupid owners. I hope those owners get what they deserve and feel the torture and pain that they put an innocent animal through. Who can be so cruel. Why do abusers even think about owning pets just to abuse them. It is just sad what this world is coming to. Crazy people

That's what's great about dogs. They seem to know there are kind people out there, as well as the mean ones. No matter how they have been abused. Talk about the audacity of hope. Our maker set their heads on the str8test of any creature.

I dont know how people can get animals and not take care of them. I have animals and they are just like my children. When i hear stories like this one it makes me mad that this is happening. if i have more room in my home i would take any animal that need a good loving home.

If you feed your dog at least once a day you would notice a problem! The owner of this dog should have to volenteer at a shelter as part of his punishment so that he can see what some of these animals go through, maybe he would understand better.

I am glad this big girl is going to be ok. I don't know how people can be so cruel. She knawed off her leg than stuck around to see if anyone would help..and they didn't. The owner deserves to be in jail, he was obviously doing more than ignoring her!

It is always a horror to hear these types of stories. Why are some people so uncaring and cruel to their pets? I am glad she will be OK and I hope Panda finds a loving and caring home to go to for the rest of her life.

I look at my babies when I read the abuse stories and I wonder how people do it. How they look at them and know they are relying on them for help, for food, for care and love and how they can just turn their back.
This poor pup obviously has an incredible will. I will pray for him. As for the owner, I hope he suffers the same kind of pain.

How sad that the animal had to go through that! The man should be fined far more than 1000 dollars... isn't it a shame we can't outlaw him from ever owning a pet again?

Are there not criminal charges the owner could face?

How irresponsible. It has to be really horrible for a dog to chew off its own leg to escape abuse. The owner should be locked up and charged with alot more than a vet bill. I just want to adopt this dog to show it that there is people out there that wont abuse a dog.
