Dog Fighting Reward Program Nips Rings in the Bud

Browse News

TALLAHASSEE -- Across the United States, pit bulls are being forced to fight one another for money. Most of the time, it's an underground ring that could net tens of thousands of dollars to the dogs owner, but now a national program is hoping to stop the fighting by using reward money as incentive.

As the poster child for fighting rings, Winston still holds the scars from his days of being a bait dog to make other dogs more vicious for fighting in the ring.

Less than a year has gone by from his days of being battered, bruised and abused, but now he is making the rounds in Florida for stopping illegal dog fighting.

“You see first hand the horror and damage and destruction and pain that this animal has gone through -- senseless pain,” said Emery Gainey, director of Law Enforcement Relations and Victim Services.

Together with the Humane Society of the United States, Florida is getting the word out about a new program that offers a $5,000 reward to anyone giving information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved in dog fighting, says Attorney General Bill McCollum.

"We hope that providing a financial incentive will encourage people to come forward and report animal fighters so we can see these people behind bars,” said Jennifer Hobgood, Florida State director of the Southeast Regional Office Humane Society.

Winston’s new owner is relieved that authorities are embracing more ways to make it harder for the illegal sport to continue underground.

"It's fantastic -- it's long overdue,” said Amy Raddar, Winston’s owner. “These dogs, people don't understand the horrendous stuff that is done to these dogs in the name of what they consider sport.”

The HSUS estimates 40,000 people nationwide, are involved in organized dog fighting and more than 250,000 dogs are placed in dogfighting pits each year.
Last year, authorities in Florida investigated at least 25 cases of animal fighting from dogs to birds all across the Sunshine State. But the issue of dog fighting is not an isolated illegal activity, this kid animal abuse is a trigger to other problems and cases of abuse.

"It's a sickening activity that not only abuses animals but keeps the community less safe,” Hobgood said. “Just their presence in the community sometimes will lead to illegal gambling, drugs, and even homicide has been tied to animal fighting."

The sport of dog fighting has been around for years, but has been recently back in the news with the 2007 arrest of Michael Vick. The former NFL star shined the spotlight on a sport that many people don't think is that big a deal.

"Florida agents have been working on this for awhile -- it's an ongoing issue,” Agent Emery Gainey said. “Surely, Mr. Vick's incident brought it to a national level."
While Raddar hates that cases like Vick’s are a reality she said, “but whatever it takes to get it out there that's it's so wrong.”

To lend a hand in ending the problem, Raddar adopted Winston in September 2007 in hopes of rehabbing the dog back to health both mentally and physically.

"He's come a long way and is a little shy and leery of other people,” Raddar said. “He has a ways to go, but he's improving everyday."

Winston still has the “typical fight” scars on his face, head, neck and front legs from his bait days, but as time goes on, Raddar hopes that he'll make a full recovery.
In the meantime, she's more than happy to share her new best friend with the world, as together, they try to stop dog fighting around the country, not only with the monetary reward, but by showing how loving these dogs can be.

"For him to bounce back from that to me is amazing,” Raddar said. “He's so resilient and so loving. He loves kids and loves people."

Winston has some ground to cover before he is completely trusting of other people, especially males, but Raddar continues working with him everyday as she has for the past nine months to help him put the past in the past.

His former life was nothing short horrific -- the details of which caused the Attorney General even to cringe -- however, Winston is pushing through and now Florida has a real dog fighting champion.

The HSUS encourages anyone who has information on illegal animal fighting -- including dog and cock fighting -- to contact their local law enforcement office, and: give them as many details as possible about the suspected animal fighting situation; anonymity is possible while reporting illegal animal fighting to law enforcement; inform the agency about The HSUS's reward program.

For more information on the national reward program, call the HSUS at 202-452-1100 or visit humanesociety.org.

I do not like the fact that people should wait for money to do the right thing but having said that I will say - do what you gotta do to get the word out- the more convictions the better. Pretty soon they will not know who they can trust and maybe this horrific abuse will come to an end. Need to get something like this program going in all states. Make is so hard they won't think about fighting dogs again. Lets see some still money awards to support the cause and some very long prison terms, that is the only thing that will wake them up. AND---fine all of those who attend these fights as well.

It's sad that we have to use money to get people to open up! People should do this out of the kindness of their hearts...but then again, many who go to these disgusting things or even fight dogs are criminals (well, other than committing the crime of animal cruelty). I'm a big fan of pit bulls & all the "bully" breeds & I hate that they get this undeserved bad reputation because of disgustingly cruel people!

That is right and if this works then it is a very good thing. That poor pit sure had gone through some horrible abuse, look at him now, a great spokes person or spokes dog for all that is WRONG with people who fight dogs...

I honestly didn't realize the number of dogs involved was so huge. I also am truly amazed that people find this entertaining to watch. I'm glad to hear any efforts to put and end to this senseless activity.

I didn't know the numbers were so "huge", either. It's just terrible that people would actually enjoy watching dogs fight. How unbelievably cruel.

It is sad that they have to offer money to get people to do the right thing, but if it will help to save the lives of animals, than it is worth it. I hope that it proves successful. Abusing animals to make money is so disgusting. I will never understand why anyone would think that it was okay.

Well its great places are finally nipping this problem in the butt instead of just killing and banning possibly innocent dogs for just being who they are.

I completely agree. It is the people responsible for dog fighting that need to be taken care of, not the dogs. There are hundreds of loving pit bulls out there who automatically have a bad rap because of what humans have done. Hopefully we can begin to separate the two.

So true! I know some people who automatically assume pit bulls are dangerous, but it's the people who use abuse to make them do what they want them to do who are the dangerous ones.

My email letter to the twenty Verizon employees whose email addresses Nelson so kindly furnished:

Subject: Commercials featuring dogs

Verizon:

Your commercials continue to apparently target the baser instincts in people. Pit bulls are the latest in a lengthening string of such as make me almost physically ill. If your company was not "the only game in town" where I live (for land line phone service), and there were another company that did not scrape the bottom of the "marketing barrel" for sales pitch fodder, you can rest assured that I would change companies. My experience comes from more than twenty-three years.

It is likely that your bottom line has become dependent upon those younger folks that most utilize the perks offered, from "texting" to other colorful and sleek packages. That may make comments from older folks like me, of little interest.

I email in the hope that at least a few of you understand that marketing can also incorporate class and a higher caliber of content. This ad does a disservice to dogs, sensible people and animal lovers. It does nothing for your corporate reputation.

I do hope to hear from some of those to whom this email letter is addressed.

It shames me that the payments I sent to Verizon each month are used in part to pay for such abysmal "advertising" campaigns.

The perception is further advanced by dumb commercials and the media that perpetuates the fear image of pit bulls.

Verizon posted a commercial portraying pit bulls in a real bad light. Misconception is out biggest enemy here.

Verizon has put out a new commercial which will do harm to our pit bull companions. They are portrayed negatively and perpetuates the bad stereotype... please spread this and copy and paste the Verizon executive email addresses and tell them to pull this.

Verizon commercial:www.youtube.com

copy and paste ADDRESSES and let them know what you think:

Steve Zipperstein and Margaret Feldman's email addresses "bounced," but the other eighteen were delivered!

Nelson, where I live, we are held hostage by Verizon, as it is the "only game in town" for land line phones. Having been held captive by their often-arrogant way of doing business, I am not surprised by the mindset that considers such commercials "market-driven." I will be sending that list of email addresses a message and will post it here. Perhaps it will contain a bit of inspiration for others. Thank you so much for this empowering information!

i used to have a pit,she was nice but a little weird with other dogs.great people dog tho.

In April I adopted a pit bull puppy. She is a joy, but when I think what her life could have been had the wrong person gotten hold of her well, I just don't want to think about it. She is a sweet natured dog that gets along with my other dogs and people. It's all in how these dogs are trained and raised. She is a very social animal and is doing fine, but not quite 4 months yet. Thank God, she will never have to experience a fight ring or be a breeder as I will spay her at 6 months.

its great that states are cracking down on dog fighting and trying to get the people to help with it also. it would be a lot harder for cops to find dog fights if other people did not call in to give them info

More and more folks are looking to help animals. Yet it is just not enough. Hopefully the reward money for turning in somebody for fighting dogs will help.

Look at boxing. It reminds me of the times in Rome when people thought it was a fun outing to go see people kill one another. Those fighters didn't have a choice either. What's wrong with people that they need blood to make it exciting. People haven't changed much.

This is awesome! Insightful concept that other states need to consider. I think if more evil dog owners that fight their dogs for $ learn of this reward, they may turn on each other & turn their coharts in for $5000. I do think the fighting ring of evil humans just might kill each other off for this narc rationality but if it saves the dogs! I would like for the HSUS to install this program nationwide. Save the dogs!

And I love the $5,000 reward, that should help I would think? Dog fighting (any animal fighting) is just the most cruel and inhumane thing, I would love to put those people in a torture chamber of some sort and see how they like it.....

I really hope this works, my heart goes out to these poor dogs who go through what they do. I also agree with Terrin that there needs to be some kind of protection that these people are offered when they turn them in. If these people can do this to innocent animals theres no telling what they will do to people. But god I hope it works and atleast puts a huge damper on dog fighting period. It needs to end!

This is a great idea. But unless the police are willing to offer some kind of witness protection to the people turning in the 'rings' not much will happen. Mere money is not motivation enough when dealing with hardened 'animal killers and law breakers'! I have no problem turning in abusers of any kind be it a child, or animal, but I certainly do use discretion when reporting dog fighting, hog-dog training (very cruel), or chicken fighting. I do ask law enforcement for protection for my animals and my family. So far, it has only been telephone threats, etc. but I don't take them lightly. It is great that the HSUS is doing something for Cruelty Awareness, but the Law Enforecement needs to step up the protection issue of the citizens!

I agree with you. I have no problem turning in abuse cases either & have. The people your turning in though have no conscience or respect for life. Given that fact, you have to protect yourself. I will no longer give out my info when I call in cases. It's up to the animal control & Police officers to handle the case information. I pray they take it serious like they are in FL but so far they haven't impressed me here in IN. Do the right thing but keep yourself save as well!

This is a cause that is close to my heart because my favorite breeds are the so-called "dangerous" ones, pit bulls being my most favorite (well, the disgusting, abusive people who train them to be vicious earned these poor dogs an undeserved bad reputation).

If lawmakers are offering an incentive then they are actually taking it seriously and are actively enforcing these anti-cruelty laws. Many states have such laws but they are not enforced. It's good to see others besides specialty groups fighting for animals' rights. I hope this program is successful.

A reward can be a good way of giving people a reason to get involved who might have just kept quiet in the past. That reward may not sound like much but if you are short of cash it can be a fortune

Offering reward money is a good incentive ~ anything that will help end this barbaric sport! Not only will it stop the cruelties and injustices being done to the pitts but hopefully they can gain a new reputation as loving dogs and not fighters! People think they are mean animals when it is humans training them to be that way and it is so unfair to the poor dogs! Some states are even banning them! Horrible!

These people are all about money - so the idea of a reward sounds like a good one to me. We are all animal lovers here, so we know that pits can be good dogs. I have read how other breed bite more than pits - but you NEVER heard about that on the news where I live - only when it is a pit.

I am glad there is more being done to stop dog fighting. I will never understand these people without feelings for such loyal companions!
