Dog Daycare Owner Says It's Easy Being Green

Browse News

ORLANDO –- When it comes to helping the environment, even pets are going green. The University of Doglando is central Florida’s first dog daycare center to go green.

Since Janie Nelson came here with her 1-year-old dog Lexi, she has changed the way she goes about choosing cleaning products.

“I was concerned about the environment, but I didn’t really know that much about being careful with cleaning products,” Nelson said. “I kind of did what my mom always did and used Lysol and bleach, and all the kind of stuff, and really didn’t think a whole lot about it.”

At Doglando, dogs are able to run, jump and play, or enjoy a cool dip to escape the Florida heat, just like at other dog daycare facilities. That, however, is where the similarities end.

Using eco-friendly products is the rule here, which took clients some getting used to.

“We’d be using biodegradable poop bags and they’re like, ‘Oh, this is a little weird. It feels a little weird, what is it?’ ” said Doglando owner Teena Patel. “And so we took that opportunity to explain to them that these are biodegradable poop bags, and this is how we’re going green.”

Doglando opened in April, and already 10 percent to 15 percent of their customers are using green alternative products, Patel says. Everyday Patel uses items like Epsom salts and baking soda to make cleaning solutions, as well as earth-friendly laundry detergent.“

That was a big concern for a lot of people,” she said of her clients’ reactions. “‘Oh, is this soy-based stuff, is this natural stuff just as good? Does it clean just as well?’

“We go through a lot of linen, towels, and they’re white. They’re just as white as your own white laundry would be and we don’t even use bleach."

Most dog owners, Patel says, do not notice how many chemicals their pets are exposed to during the course of their day.“

A lot of times there’s lying down over here, rolling around, and then they go on to the couch,” she said. “They’re rolling around on the couch, one of them could have just jumped out of the pool, now they’re on the towels, or the linen, or whatever.

“Then when they’re bored or itchy they lick themselves. All of this stuff is going into their system.”

Patel’s message has gotten through to Nelson.

“She was explaining to me that everything she used in her business was environmentally friendly,” Nelson said. “And I was like, ‘Wow, can you really do that?’ And yes, you can.”

Nelson now stocks up on biodegradable waste bags and uses safe alternatives to harsh kitchen cleaners, thanks to Patel.“She was sharing with me the different products she was using,” Nelson said. “ And really convinced me that it’s really time to start really not using the harsher chemicals and things in my home with my pets, my fish and my children especially.”

Green-minded purchases represent a little more than 2 percent of the nearly $43 billion spent annually on pet products, according to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association. Patel, however, says monitoring what goes into the cart at the grocery store is a good way to start converting.

“Start checking and becoming a bit more sensitive to the products that you’re picking up off the shelf,” she said. “Clorox, the manufacturer of Clorox, now makes Greenworks, so it’s all on the same shelf.”

Green items are not as expensive as people may think, Patel says.

“They might be 25 cents or 50 cents more, but what’s the value?” she asks. “50 cents for the possibility of not harming yourself or your pet? I mean, that’s huge.”

The chemicals in shampoos, the toxins in toys and the pesticides in flea and tick medication can all negatively impact the environment, Patel says. As more of her clients choose green, though, Patel sees the tide turning.“

Our research and our efforts are paying off and it may not be directly to University of Doglando,” she said. “But it is to the world, and it is to the environment, and that’s our goal, too.“

We’re not just a business, we’re a service and whenever we can help we want to.”

This is a great idea. It really makes you think. I've been trying to buy green products, but will be taking it even more seriously now.

Great way to educate owners. It takes a little more effort to make your own cleaning products, but is worth it in the end.

We have stopped using any pesticides or weed killers on our lawn. I made my husband stop, especially since we have two dogs that love to roll around on the lawn. So what if the lawn doesn't look like a golf course, it's better for the environment and our dogs. And us too in the long run.

We did the same thing. No more fertilizers, pesticides, etc. on our lawn. The dogs would have that stuff all over them and we would track it into the house from walking in the grass. Nope. Our lawn may not look like some of the other lush, green, velvety lawns in the area, but at least I know we're helping ourselves, our pets, and the environment.

Wow! Bless you Tina! Not only operates a green facitlity but also enlightens her clients. The no-kill shelter that I take supplies to, (only cats, but in a cage-free environment) cleans with vinegar since bleach can be harmful. The floors have a special, non-porous sealant and are steam cleaned every week using vinegar. The sealant is scratch proof and doesn't peel with age and is non-toxic. Don't know the name, but this was explained to me when I first visited the shelter.

Green is the new... uh, good? Green marketing is a good way to differentiate oneself from the competition. I hope that it will one day be so common that people will have to look to other socially responsible ways to differentiate themselves from the competition.

Everyone should be doing this! I use baking soda to scrub my sinks and tub at home and it works great, makes the drains smell great and makes your hands soft to boot! You can't go wrong.

Absolutely wonderful! I dont use any chemicals in my home either. If you take the time at first, you can figure out all kinds of ways to become greener. Then it becomes second nature. Its really nice that the clients are changing their ways too.

It is good to hear that people are going green. It is healther for both the environment and living. We have been brought up in a society where you use all the old standard cleaning products. Hopefully that mind set can be changed and more people will go green.

As you know Oregon is very green minded. We are supplied with huge recycling containers and containers for yard debris . It was a little awkward getting started now the hubby does it as well, separate and recycle each week. I was surprised at how my trash went down as the recycle went up. I will have to check out the biodegradable poop bags, we currently put it in paper - I enjoyed this story very much.

I believe it is so important for each of us to do what we can to be more green. I know that it is sometimes hard to live fully green, but if we all do a little bit our world will be a better place both for us and for our pets. It is easy to do things such as buying green cleaners and natural pet foods.

I had never thought about all the chemicals that our pets (and ourselves) are exposed to. I've seen the Greenworks cleaners in stores, just haven't taken the time to become aware of what they have to offer. Now I know better.

We all should learn ways to become "greener" in our daily lives. It doesn't have to be giant leaps at once, but small baby steps will help. This green daycare is fantastic- promoting long term health for the dogs, humans, and the environment.

A refreshing story. The University of Doglando (cute name) with its emphasis on green for the good not only of the dogs in their care, but also people and the environment is an enterprise that we all should try to mirror. While it is true that "going green" takes some thought a little planning and a lot of commitment in the long run our planet, the human race and our furry friends will be far better for the effort. For the most part our government and big corporations have failed us, it is up to people to see the light and make the effort to make this a better world not only for ourselves but for our children and our grandchildren.

I understand the importance of going green with cleaning products at home, but are these products as effective as bleach in killing germs/bacteria/etc in a shelter environment where the animal intake is greatly multiplied?

I need to get some of those doggie waste bags, I'm always having to clean up after my little dog when we go for walks, she always has to go, and thats such a neat idea. I never knew they had them, I just use the normal black doggie bags, guess I need to check PetsMart for them.

I try to be as green as possible and I like to support companies that do the same. After learning how toxic many cleaners can be to my dogs I have entirely switched over to green cleaning products.

I am relieved actually to read this. My husband & I stopped using any store bought cleaners @ home because they contain carcinogens & neurotoxins. Our Rottie died of cancer & I have MS. So we took it serious when we started using all shaklee cleaning products only in our home. We don't want our cleaning products to be making our pets & us sick. I am the one who cleans the house & uses the products mainly so it is important to me that they work. Yes, they do work or I wouldn't buy them. Period end of story. I can't believe I ever used the bad toxic stuff. In a way I feel responsible for my dogs death. It may have been prevented if we had switched to healthier products sooner. Maybe I would not have developed MS at all who knows. Better late than never. Save your health, planet, pets & more use green products only in your home, business, car etc.
